From an enthusiast's point of view:

Several things are of interest to me before I consider buying this device:

1- Battery Life
2- Performance
3- what kind of OS does it run (if it can support many open formats, and can do extra's like viewing movies, listening to music,...)
4- Screen size and resolution
5- Price

Battery life is really my number one concern here. Perhaps the device has 8 hours of reading pleasure, but runs dry after 1 hour of movie.
Then I'd not be interested!
In battery life I'd love to see several days of reading books pleasure, and 8hours of computing power (that is watching movies, reading internet pages, running programs, be wirelessly connected to a wifi network).

I like a device that has plenty of battery; perhaps even a dual battery on each side in the length of the device, which will help holding the device, while the electronics are in the center!
Kind of 2 pipes in the length hosting strong 5800mAh 12V batteries.

Performance only matters to the point where you can view movies in the resolution of the screen at a minimal fps (21-30fps).
It would be great if it had a 720p screen for movies!

It would also be amazing if it was able to play basic 2D or 3D games!
It would super if the price was lower than $200!

If it had Wifi connection to connect to a wireless network

If it could be connected straight to a car or plane's cigarette lighter for charge

If it could read open formats, like .pdf, .html, .txt, .doc.
Not limited to documents but perhaps also to many audio and video capabilities.
If it would have an OS like Windows it should be able to read all of this, but a well known Linux distribution would be nice too! (Eg: Debian based, so that many Ubuntu programs can be installed, like OpenOffice, etc...).

A Calendar, Clock, Book reading software, audio and video player, Reading software,... The majority you'll find for free in a linux distribution

Also an 8GB SSD (flash drive) would be nice!
A Xubuntu OS (linux) fits within 3GB of disk space.
Personally I run my Xubuntu OS from a 4GB USB stick, with about most programs I need (Like openoffice) installed.
But I have little space for movies, or audio.
An 8GB SSD should give an extra 4GB of free space.
More space can be gotten through an SD cardslot, for upto 16GB of extra space to store stuff.

Basically a low performing ARM processor with graphics good enough to display 720p video, is good enough to run a Xubuntu OS (with the xfce desktop).

Stick 512MB of RAM in there, and it's enough for nearly everything (Xubuntu runs from 192MB of RAM, but you will want to have some extra for programs).
If you plan to not include a swap drive, you'd do well to increase RAM a bit to 786 or 1GB of ram.

It would be super if the RAM was upgradeable, but the only upgradeable ram would be DDR2 or DDR3 ram, which needs a powerhungry motherboard.

Headphones out, a little speaker on the top of the screen, and a mic on the bottom to give basic audio, could even turn into a skype phone!

Webcam?

I know it's a reader, but many people die for a reader that has ability to do more than just read books!
They want a full blown OS on there that reads books, and watches video and audio, and if one could game on it, those older DOS games, or windows or some Linux games, people would go ballistic!

I think this is a great idea. I have been looking all over the web for this exact concept and it just doesn't exist. I was thinking of hanging one on the wall in my kitchen so my wife can check her e-mails and listen to her music while she cooks (once a month) but i wasn't willing to spend $2000 on a full tablet PC.

This is a great idea, I'd just like the system to be open enough to have a package manager that would allow me to install Opera. It's fast, lightweight, andwith Opera Link I just sign into the browser from any Opera browser and quickly have all of my bookmarks, speed dial and many other vital bits for the browser.

Also, looking at many of the lighter linux distro's like TinyMe will give you a good list of tiny programs to use, like Abiword instead of OpenOffice's Writer. It uses less resources, and is more than featured enough for the uses it'll be put to.

SDHC compatibilit is a must. I'd love to be able to have to slots like the Pandora does. If this tablet has usb ports, please position them in a way so that we can make modificatications to it, like internalizing some usb devices. AT&T sells a wonderful set of 3G usb devices that are supported by the linux kernel if I do remember it correctly. If so, I would definitely buy one for this tableet, internalize it myself and have internet access everywhere. It would cost me $10 more than my current prepaid phone plan with Metro, but it would allow for so much more functionality. Since you're adding Skype we'd have a cheap cell phone with this combination of the tablet and the usb device. It would be completely boss and everything else on the market.

Imagine making a voice call with this device while quickly scribbling notes or surfing the web in a wifiless area. I was planning to buy a Pandora, but if you guys make this tablet please let me know, I'll be a day one buyer. Just let me know in advance so I can budget for it accordingly, I still have bills to pay! :)

Is there some type of mailing list that interested parties can be added to? I'd like to be kept up to date on a project as ambitious and magnificent as this one.

I'd also like to volunteer as tester, f I don't get one of these for free I'll pay to do so. I'll definitely internalize the AT&T device after extensive testing of in the usb port. I'll even try to internalize a usb hub and post a howto on how to do so if I succeed. I'll also mess around with installing Fedora on the device if it's possible to do so via usb to give people a how to on messing with the OS and how to use that os. Fedora is also lightweight and very efficient. You do need to use Autoten to update the codecs, but after that it's brilliant. I'm no linux master, but I can a least get it to automatically load a browser to configure it with lightweight programs that would be good to use on the tablet. It'd be easier if I have the source for the on-screen keyboard you'll be developing, if not I'll just have to use the useability keyboard.

Fedora 10 on a pc with 1 Ghz Pentium III and 512 MB of ram runs firefox and open Office smoothely at a 1360x768 resolution, so on this tablet it should be just as brilliant if not moreso since the resolution is lower. Please allow for installing other os's and programs.

This is a great idea, I’d just like the system to be open enough to have a package manager that would allow me to install Opera. It’s fast, lightweight, andwith Opera Link I just sign into the browser from any Opera browser and quickly have all of my bookmarks, speed dial and many other vital bits for the browser.

Also, looking at many of the lighter linux distro’s like TinyMe will give you a good list of tiny programs to use, like Abiword instead of OpenOffice’s Writer. It uses less resources, and is more than featured enough for the uses it’ll be put to.

SDHC compatibilit is a must. I’d love to be able to have to slots like the Pandora does. Since you’re adding Skype we’d have a cheap cell phone with this combination of the tablet and the usb device. It would be completely boss and everything else on the market.

Imagine making a voice call with this device while quickly scribbling notes or surfing the web in a wifiless area. I was planning to buy a Pandora, but if you guys make this tablet please let me know, I’ll be a day one buyer. Just let me know in advance so I can budget for it accordingly, I still have bills to pay!

I disagree with the stylus necessity; using something like this by holding it in one hand and jabbing with a stylus in the other is not as precise as jabbing with a finger.

I will agree on the option of a stylus though, because as you say, SOME people prefer it, and there may be web-graphic designers or just people who like using online drawing tools that would find this device attractive.
