NYTimes To Customize Headlines For LinkedIn Users

The NYTimes and LinkedIn are announcing a partnership this evening that will bring tailored headlines in the NYTimes Business and Technology sections to users based on some of their profile information. The example the NYTimes uses: LinkedIn members who work in the energy sector will see Times stories that cover the energy business. Users can also share stories with other LinkedIn users (this feature adds LinkedIn to the list of other bookmarking services like Facebook, Mixx, etc.).

The targeted headline feature will highlight the five latest NYTimes stories relevant to the user’s profession or industry. It’s likely that LinkedIn is sharing revenue or paying a bounty to the NYTimes for the partnership, although the companies aren’t commenting on the financial part of the deal.

what i want next
-its actually incredibly hard to find relevant stories on nytimes.com and wsj.com so i want them to re-orient *all* news stories based on my industry, role, and current project.

It’s not like you to not editorialize a little bit :-)

 

This is one of the smartest partnerships I’ve seen in a long time! While linkedin is doing well, this is huge validation of their concept, which should see a spike in their user #s given the demographic of the NYT readers.

NYT of course gets to go web 2.0! With all we here about the newspaper industry doing, NYT seems like it will be ahead of the pack for the digital shift!

i agree with andrew, wsj + linkedin seems to make more sense. still a smart partnership, nonetheless.

 

based on how this test goes with linkedin, NYT could extend this across other verticals: Sports, Movies, Food, etc. with other vertical SN.

Could be an interesting trend for social networks to syndicate their valuable profile data…

 

Good idea. A helluva a lot better than that “News” section that took up the top 30% of LinkedIn home pages after their recent “redesign” mess.

 

I hope the headlines are human scrubbed and vetted.

The LinkedIn version of headlines and industry news has had a few stumbles. :)

 

I like it. I’ve been using LinkedIn for a long time and was wondering when it would start adding a little more “added-value” to the service, so to speak. Again, the dissemination of news across multiple platforms by large news sources like the New York Times seems the way to go in the new media age. My news follows me, instead of the other way around.

 

linkedin.com and realmatch.com were just added to the About.com Top 10 employment sites list.

Great move…dispite the NYTimes generally being very left leaning, I love their business and technology sections.

Can’t see anything yet on NYtimes.com…when does it launch?

 

Ariel said it, let the user profile influence the results. this will give a much better user experience.
