One big problem, there is not enough lithium in the world to replace all cars with Li-ion battery behemoths … unless we start strip mining the moon … lotsa pure lithium in the soil up there … i like it, strip mine the earth first and then move onto the moon!

Same problem with solar panels … with approx. 10 year useful life the rate of silicon required just to keep the installed solar panel base up to spec is out of this world …. as in you’d need to go off the planet to find enough silicon … let’s do it!

If there is a 1 year waiting list then Tesla has underpriced rather than overpriced their car. As they get used to mass producing vehicles which is the true measure of the big companies like Toyota (it certainly isn’t styling and asthetics), and also as the battery tech gets cheaper, they can add features scale back the performance and sell us boring sedans at a eighth of the price.

Exactly, take the catalytic converter, its costs, performance penalties and lifespan plus the added weight. The Cat is a basic piece of kit, whereas a even a dirty coal burning power station can do a better job of completely burning its fuels and cleaning up its exhausts. It the sends the useful product to your home via efficient HV cables instead of hauling it to the gas station in a gas guzzling truck.

£150,000 is not less then $104,000 the lightening actually costs nearly 3 times more then the Tesla.
Though it specs are higher.

20mpg out of a hybrid thats really bad my WS6 Firebird gets better then that on the highway and is a over 2 seconds quicker in the 1/4 mile 11.98 vs 14.3 and has a top speed 40mph higher.
I even seen modified civics that could spank the LS600h some of them run 12s.
Heck even the hybrid GMC Yukon a huge SUV gets 22mpg that lexus is a joke and definitely not worth $104,000.
If I had 100K I’d buy the Tesla over the Lexus any day.

John, I just posted an article on my blog about the Lightning before I read your comment. I think it’s a MUCH more respectable competitor, though I worry that the company may not have the level of financial backing that Tesla has.

What would be even MORE obvious, besides GM bringing BACK the EV1, would be for Tesla, or someone else with talent enough to break the stranglehold of the Big Four, to actualize a sustainable resource for all of the electricity that electric cars are going to need.
Can you imagine massive amounts of electricity from the Ocean by a system completely OUT of the water?
I have.

What are you talking about? Forget GM. They have zero vision. They only cancelled the program because they were afraid people might actually like the EV1 and they wouldn’t be able to reap profits via the replacement parts business for the obsolete ICE. Tesla is NOT going to fold in 5 years. You are a fool.

I will power mine off the wind generator I am building. Too bad there are so many economic roadblocks in the way of selling power into the grid I could help pay for my Tesla. Power companies should provide the upgraded meters for their cost plus installation.

Sanford, like the American automakers, you’re one savvy investor.

How much do you think this car will be worth a few years down the road, considering its first-of-its-kind status? (No, I know it isn’t the first electric car….HELLO) But it is the first serious mass-marketed high performance electric sports car that also looks incredible. These guys at Tesla will make a car for the “rest of us” next, and this will be the ORIGINAL collector’s item.
