I dont mind any of this .With the Iphone released at 199$ in US , why the heck do we have to buy it at 840$ ?. From the IT hub of India , bangalore . The two Service providers Airtel and Vodafone have iphone priced at this huge amount !. And with no 3G suport , why should we even buy it :( . I request if techcruch can make an article on the same , so that in some way the same is brought to light .

Really, Bret? You're so smart and so loyal of an AT&T customer that you waited in line before you decided to do any sort of research on how much the 3G would cost you? Or did you just assume you'd be able to talk your way out of the upgrade requirement? Something stinks about your story.

I, however, did my homework. I waited to upgrade my phone and sign a new account agreement in preparation for the iPhone release. I paid the lower amount. Take note.

I returned my iPhone 3G today, on principle.

Here's the background:

I've had an AT&T wireless account for 8 years. My monthly bill averages $200, so a little quick math says that I have paid them $19,200 in wireless service fees. In that time I've had two refurbished phones, so it's not like I've cost them a lot in subsidizing my hardware.

Two days ago I stood in line at the Apple Store to finally purchase an iPhone 3G. It was time.

Imagine my surprise that when the guy in front of me paid $299 for his 16GB iPhone because he WASN'T already an AT&T customer, and I was told by the Apple employee that I had to pay $499 for mine because I was an AT&T customer but "wasn't eligible for an upgrade".

After two days of phone calls to AT&T I've decided to return my iPhone and cancel my AT&T service after 8 years. It turns out that Verizon actually WANTS my business and is giving me a great deal on a new Blackberry at a lower monthly service cost.

The worst part is that I'm a very, very loyal Apple customer. I own several Macs and am a true Apple aficionado. But this experience has left a really, really bad taste in my mouth.

For 8 years I was an AT&T customer, paying them $19,200 with very little hardware subsidy (if any). Now Apple and AT&T tell me that I have to pay $200 more for my iPhone than the guy in front of me because I'm already an AT&T customer and he's not?

That's just unconscionable.

Shame on you, Apple, for entering into a deal that treats loyal customers like that.

I want to share with you a funny comment I heard. I was watching videos about technology on a big channel's website the day of the iPhone launch. One young adult college student was asked why he was buying an iPhone 3G and he replied: "I am buying the iPhone because it is a 'chick magnet'". Those two words make me laugh, for some time. I realized that those two words explained a lot about the iPhone. I will not comment if the statement is true or false (try at your own risks ;) ).

Lets' pull our heads out of the sand, which is the technology bubble surrounding us, and lets' have a look on the mainstream consumers. The iPhone has been able to appeal to people who did not use a Blackberry from RIM. In fact, mainstream users who do not work in a large company or that are interested in technology might have never heard of RIM's Blackberry, or barely what it does. I suspect some of those people might have bought the iPhone.

This takes us to a whole new level, one far beyond technology itself. All the applications and technology inside the iPhone is the main reason why would buy it or not. But now a whole range of consumers are getting their first hand on the iPhone because it looks nice and it is popular. It is becoming a TREND, like the iPod, although the iPhone is more complex and would appeal less directly to the mass market.

So what have we learned? Well the iPhone is now appealing to a mass market and for a bunch of reasons, some that are not even linked to technology. More interestingly, I am sure some of the new buyers barely know half of what the iPhone can do.

Last statistics showed most iPhone users were still young male. I suspect this broad appeal will change that data. Expect to hear next year a young adult college student tell you she bought the iPhone because it is a 'boy magnet'.

It's cool that you aren't into gadgets. Some of us are though. And some of us like the iPhone and want to read about it. I'm sure you are into something equally pointless (like posting meaningless, sarcastic comments about stories you don't care about) that the rest of us aren't. To each his or her own.

I waited until nov 07 to buy an iPhone and was rewarded by a big price cut and waiting in line behind zero people.

The iPhone 2.0 software update gave me enough of an iPhone fix.

I'm ready for the review. I can't wait to read MORE about the iphone. The iPhone is the coolest thing ever in the history of mankind. It is the pinnacle of technological development. It is the best thing since the invention of the twinky. I love apple. I love the iphone. Steve Jobs should run for President and place 3g iphones in the hands of all American citizens. I'd rather play with my iPhone than go on a date.
