CrunchGear’s Official iPhone 3G Review
by John Biggs on July 18, 2008

Hype, hype, hype. Now that the iPhone 3G launch has blown over and I’ve been able to integrate the phone into my daily routine, I think we’re ready for an official CrunchGear review. Our advice? Wait. With 60% certainty I predict a minor hardware or, more likely, software update in the next month or so to improve the 3G’s thus far abysmal battery life.

The iPhone 3G is incrementally better than the 1st generation iPhone, which means that only die-hards and non-iPhone users should upgrade. Everything good about the iPhone is still here – the UI, the size and shape, the music player. To paraphrase Churchill: It has been said that iPhone is the worst mobile phone except for all the others that have been tried.

  • I think iPhone 3.0 will be coming up in December for sure… Based on some talks and rumors.

So just wait for couple more months and get the best..

    Cheers, Nag

  • >With 60% certainty I predict a minor hardware…

Let me guess, you pulled that out of your a**, didn’t you? If you continue following Apple, you will realize that Apple never updates hardware in the short term. There will be an update (if ever) in 6+ months.

So you’re recommending we “Wait.” Why? Won’t I be able to do software update if I buy now?!

    Seriously, pretty cheesy review.

@Nag:”I think iPhone 3.0 will be coming up in December for sure”

LOL… you have NO IDEA how Apple operates.

  • Have the 1st G iphone. I would get the new phone, but I keep hearing the battery sucks…

  • Surprise! how would any company live up to that hype? Expectations, expectations…

[ATT doesn't have 3g coverage here, so it doesn't matter to me. The data plan is cheaper for the original too.]

  • The secret is to turn off “Push”. GPS to some extent, but “Push” is the main culprit. It barely works for me anyway. With “Push” turned off (and 15 minute Pull enabled), you should be able to last only 25% less than iPhone 1.0. The battery life sucks, but everyone wanted 3G, those folks who knew a thing or two about 3G chips said “Be careful what you wish for”, and here we are.

  • I’m still going to go and get one. Just as soon as I find the time.

  • What’s stopping those with “battery issues” due to 3G to just turn 3G off?

    • listen, i’ll do all sorts of magic to get the battery life up but this is the iPhone 3G, not the iPhone 2. The main DRAW is the 3G and GPS. Most folks won’t turn those off and, as a result, they will suffer from poor battery life. I’m married to the phone so I’ll make do but the biggest complaint in the gadget set has been the battery life.

  • @ dave – are you seriously that worked up? its a friday big guy, pipedown. i am actually happy to say that i have no idea how apple works…why would i care? i think you have too much free time to think about what apple is thinking.

  • While I would love to buy a 3g, when I spent $400 on the iphone in the winter, I told myself, thats it for a while. For sure the most expensive phone ive ever bought and my first smart phone. So thanks for this review, doesn’t seem worth it to buy the 3g now, especially since I can get those lovely little apps on my phone!

  • One other reason to wait, will be the continuous price that will see coming throughout the next year. Like all subsidized phones, the new(hot)ones are usually a couple hundred dollars upon their release. Cell phone operators ideal price point is $0. Everybody loves a bargain. If you don’t believe me, all you need to do is look at all the price drops on the Iphone 1stGen. When the Iphone first came out, I predicted the same price drop, except, back then there was no president for Apple in this new market. Literally, everybody told me it would never happen. It did, and it will again. $129.00 by Christmas. Then $79.99 followed by 29.99.and finally zero.
Remember, rollouts of Wimax/LTE have already started. Were likely to see an Iphone LTE in a year , two at the most. On a high speed network that is capable of seemless handoffs, voip is all one will need to place a call. Because Wimax/Lte is not viable outside major metro areas, most phones will be duel mode.

  • The iPhone situation is sketchy with all the glitches and such… http://blabtech.blogspot.com

  • I’m ready for the review. I can’t wait to read MORE about the iphone. The iPhone is the coolest thing ever in the history of mankind. It is the pinnacle of technological development. It is the best thing since the invention of the twinky. I love apple. I love the iphone. Steve Jobs should run for President and place 3g iphones in the hands of all American citizens. I’d rather play with my iPhone than go on a date.

    • It’s cool that you aren’t into gadgets. Some of us are though. And some of us like the iPhone and want to read about it. I’m sure you are into something equally pointless (like posting meaningless, sarcastic comments about stories you don’t care about) that the rest of us aren’t. To each his or her own.

  • Wait for a patch or minor software update? What are you guys smoking?

That’s the stupidest FUD I’ve ever read in a loooong time!

Nominated to FUD of the day!

  • I waited until nov 07 to buy an iPhone and was rewarded by a big price cut and waiting in line behind zero people.

The iPhone 2.0 software update gave me enough of an iPhone fix.

  • where can i find an iphone in the valley? which mall/store has 16gb models?

  • @jenhu

The Burlingame store is always a good bet

  • I want to share with you a funny comment I heard. I was watching videos about technology on a big channel’s website the day of the iPhone launch. One young adult college student was asked why he was buying an iPhone 3G and he replied: “I am buying the iPhone because it is a ‘chick magnet’”. Those two words make me laugh, for some time. I realized that those two words explained a lot about the iPhone. I will not comment if the statement is true or false (try at your own risks ;) ).

Lets’ pull our heads out of the sand, which is the technology bubble surrounding us, and lets’ have a look on the mainstream consumers. The iPhone has been able to appeal to people who did not use a Blackberry from RIM. In fact, mainstream users who do not work in a large company or that are interested in technology might have never heard of RIM’s Blackberry, or barely what it does. I suspect some of those people might have bought the iPhone.

This takes us to a whole new level, one far beyond technology itself. All the applications and technology inside the iPhone is the main reason why would buy it or not. But now a whole range of consumers are getting their first hand on the iPhone because it looks nice and it is popular. It is becoming a TREND, like the iPod, although the iPhone is more complex and would appeal less directly to the mass market.

So what have we learned? Well the iPhone is now appealing to a mass market and for a bunch of reasons, some that are not even linked to technology. More interestingly, I am sure some of the new buyers barely know half of what the iPhone can do.

Last statistics showed most iPhone users were still young male. I suspect this broad appeal will change that data. Expect to hear next year a young adult college student tell you she bought the iPhone because it is a ‘boy magnet’.

  • I upgraded, I’m sorry. Wait.

  • CrushGear’s iPhone 3G review is such a fact! I mean, I did see all the pros and cons that they mentioned. What a reliable source I must say.

  • I’m come from malaysia… can I use the iphone 3G in malaysia??
what the requirement I need? do I must have credit card, and must connect to at&t.? how about the applicatian? is it work at malaysia?? please help me.. I love iphone 3G.

  • I returned my iPhone 3G today, on principle.

    Here’s the background:

I’ve had an AT&T wireless account for 8 years. My monthly bill averages $200, so a little quick math says that I have paid them $19,200 in wireless service fees. In that time I’ve had two refurbished phones, so it’s not like I’ve cost them a lot in subsidizing my hardware.

Two days ago I stood in line at the Apple Store to finally purchase an iPhone 3G. It was time.

Imagine my surprise that when the guy in front of me paid $299 for his 16GB iPhone because he WASN’T already an AT&T customer, and I was told by the Apple employee that I had to pay $499 for mine because I was an AT&T customer but “wasn’t eligible for an upgrade”.

After two days of phone calls to AT&T I’ve decided to return my iPhone and cancel my AT&T service after 8 years. It turns out that Verizon actually WANTS my business and is giving me a great deal on a new Blackberry at a lower monthly service cost.

The worst part is that I’m a very, very loyal Apple customer. I own several Macs and am a true Apple aficionado. But this experience has left a really, really bad taste in my mouth.

For 8 years I was an AT&T customer, paying them $19,200 with very little hardware subsidy (if any). Now Apple and AT&T tell me that I have to pay $200 more for my iPhone than the guy in front of me because I’m already an AT&T customer and he’s not?

    That’s just unconscionable.

Shame on you, Apple, for entering into a deal that treats loyal customers like that.

    -Bret

  • I found a very interesting and detailed article:
The Missing Guide to the iPhone 3G Price. (What Apple Forgot to Tell Us).
    You should check it out!

  • Really, Bret? You’re so smart and so loyal of an AT&T customer that you waited in line before you decided to do any sort of research on how much the 3G would cost you? Or did you just assume you’d be able to talk your way out of the upgrade requirement? Something stinks about your story.

I, however, did my homework. I waited to upgrade my phone and sign a new account agreement in preparation for the iPhone release. I paid the lower amount. Take note.

  • I dont mind any of this .With the Iphone released at 199$ in US , why the heck do we have to buy it at 840$ ?. From the IT hub of India , bangalore . The two Service providers Airtel and Vodafone have iphone priced at this huge amount !. And with no 3G suport , why should we even buy it :( . I request if techcruch can make an article on the same , so that in some way the same is brought to light .
