Twitter Testing A New Design
by Mark Hendrickson on July 17, 2008

Some Twitter users have encountered a new design while using the microblogging service today…only to see it disappear once they refresh.

Below is a screenshot that Zain Memon managed to grab before it went away. Tabs like Recent, Replies, and Everyone have been moved to the right-hand column.

Overall, nothing too major. Corvida from SheGeeks points out some of the most obvious changes:

Tabs are now to the right of the screen

You can see the number of direct messages you have (not sure if that was there before)

Time stamps and “from” stamp are in italics

Latest tweet has been pushed under the “message box

Reply and Favorite shortcuts now appear as you hover over a message

If someone sent a message via text, the txt link takes you to the Official Twitter Commands page

The previous update also does the same for Twhirl, Twitterrific, and Twittelator. Meaning it takes you to their respective homepages

The search box was also moved (Thanks Orli!)

One thing conspicuously not included in the new design: advertisements, like the ones you’ll see on Twitter Japan.

Yeah i had the same redesign about 20 mins ago, now its gone :(

Let’s see how many times we can get the phrase “bucket test” to appear on TechCrunch’s front page.

I heard Twitter was bucket testing a new design too!

Yup! I witnessed it too…check this http://tinyurl.com/66qod7

Comment replies rock.

How do you get to be in the bucket?

Find the walrus. He has the bucket.

I was going to say he’s still looking for it, but I guess you’re right:

Unless it was photoshopped…

I really liked the new look and feel! Hope it comes back :)

Yeah, I had it. Not sure I liked the right side tabs though

I was just on; seems like I missed it by just minutes.

http://www.langolols.com wtf? Is that like the movie Langoliers?

I had it, didn’t really realize it just thought things looked weird, refreshed, then say this post and wished I hadn’t because it was back to the old look.

That looks more like a change the background image in our css file then a redesign.

This isn’t a suprise to anyone; In the Summize + Twitter Blog post @Biz revealed the changes by posting a sketch of the upcoming changes:

Pay attention people!

Honestly I think it looks quite ugly, I much prefer the current design.

I like the old design better. The black outline looks trashy, unplayful, and unsophisticated. It reminds of xanga about 3 years ago. White is much more honest, open, inviting color, in my opinion.

Something Twitter users outside of the US (like myself) also noticed: translation of service messages into native tongue (Dutch in my case, although it was poorly translated)

Where was the search box moved?

It was kind of a surreal experience. I mean in one minute, everything changes and you refresh a few minutes later and everything is back to normal. A lot of collective scratching of heads and having dumb “Wha?” looks on users faces (okay, just me then).

Wow! Looks shit!

:D

With $20 million in the bank, you think they could hire a designer

So they have all their other problems fixed now? All services up and running? No more Fail Whale?

I was able to get a screenshot of the “new” Twitter UI here:

Yes, new HTML is sure to fix Twitter’s uptime issues.

Way to prioritize there, morons.

Yeah, I’m sure the same folks work on both of those things. Scaling a back-end is obviously something someone in charge of UX is also doing.

SQL queries, CSS, sure, they’re practically the same thing.

Moron doesn’t begin to describe you.

Great! Now all they need to do is stop breaking the service. :\

I dont like it……… sorry guys!

Whether they test a new design or not, Twitter will still be hot to everyone! It’s the service that they are more famous on.
