I am a 62-year old programmer. I used to be able to work 12-18 hours/day through a crunch. As I aged, my capacity as ebbed. The eyes went first. Then the endurance, and now the mental focus.

For the past two years I've taken 50-100mg/day of Provigil in crunch periods with excellent results. Have just finished my second prescription. I have taken 60 200mg pills over 2-years.

Bottom line, I'm nowhere near the programmer I used to be, but that's not from the Provigil . . . I just am getting older.

Now, I spend more time working with younger guys are in their prime, and together we get a lot done. There are still crunches, and Provigil continues to be very helpful.

Certainly, there is no magic. However, I do believe that Provogil has extended my working life and improved my personal life.

I think that a lot of the people who are entrepreneurs are also what society today calls "ADHD" or "ADD". Being diagnosed with ADHD myself, I resent it being called a "disorder"...basically the ADHD mind dedicates a lower attention level to any given task, however they can also jump quickly frome one thought to another. This means I typically have 10-20 tabs open on my computer at once (I would have more if my internet didn't slow down so much).

Now, the reason I suggest that many entrepreneurs are ADHD is because of the similarity between the attributes of ADHD minds and ENTP personalities (meyers-briggs typology). ENTPs are always trying to find solutions to problems, and they are even called "The entrepreneurs" on many websites about MBTI. So, I guess my point is that just because many of these people are taking these drugs without a prescription, doesn't mean they don't need them. I would urge anyone who takes these drugs (I take adderall), to go speak to a doctor. It is a much cheaper, easier, and more legal way to do it. I think I'll ask my doc about provigil...

The way you describe it is spot on- I have been taking Provigil for two years to control excessive daytime sleepiness. I am, however, a college student at an elite university and I use it to stay up and study - whenever I start feeling tired I just take another one (lucky for me, it is covered by my insurance). It is really just your body that gets tired- I have pulled multiple all nighters on it, literally not sleeping for over 30 hours, and while sometimes I am somewhat out of it, I am pretty much fine.

It seems that the " purists will find a way, a law" to put all of the economically, proactive, the old, the tired back into their non-product mode.

They are in little need of a rescue from anything...especially modern reality.

To the person who said Provigil isn't a miracle drug, it is - if you have a sleep disorder. I'm not doped up on Provigil. It brings me up to about 90% of where everyone else is. But at a price. I can't drink alcohol, for starters. My doctor has to advise me not to so nobody sues him.

Other sleep disorder sufferers who take Provigil tell me that if you drink, then a) the alcohol undoes the effect of the Provigil (so the excessive sleepiness and other symptoms come back) and b) Provigil lowers your alcohol tolerance so you feel like absolute cr&p and it isn't worth it. Oh and apparently combining Provigil or Ritalin with alcohol can be fatal. Then there are the other side effects. Diabetes as a side effect, anyone? Kidney failure? Your skin peeling off? My doctor made me read through all of them before I took my first lot of pills - it took a long time to read that list. I am stumped as to why anyone would risk this when they don't have to.

Oh, and if you're a girl, you should be aware that Provigil renders the contraceptive pill ineffective.

Nobody knows about the long-term effects or damage because it's such a new drug. But thanks to all the idiots chowing down Provigil so they can enhance their performance when they are already healthy, those of us who take it because we actually NEED it have a hell of a time when, for example, we want to go abroad and take it with us. Thanks a bunch.

No postings from someone prescribed the medicine? Provigil has been very beneficial in my life. Because of apnea, I couldn't recall how to do tasks repetitively done for ten years, I would stop in the middle of sentences because I couldn't recall words. I was failing in my job and fearful someone would notice. While driving I would feel like the car was "floating" and aware my reflexes were less than they should be. There were also mild incidences of cataplexy, when I wouldn't know where I was and I'd totally forget what I had been doing. If I sat down and stopped moving, I'd fall asleep where ever I was. So, taken as prescribed, not abused, Provigil gave me back my life .. like the Robin Williams movie "Awakenings". This drug has been life-saving to this almost 60 year-old single mom with a disabled dependent son. But to those of you that don't need it ... you're crazy to abuse it, take advantage of your young, healthy bodies and treat them well, because they don't last forever!

I got a sleep study done and it turns out I wasn't breathing like I should when sleeping. I was prescribed a CPAP(positive airway pressure) machine which gently pushed air into my lungs while sleeping.
I had been drinking a couple of 40 oz.s a day and sorta wanted to quit. I was prescribed Provigil and it advised not drinking alcohol. When I tried the Provigil I drank half of a 40 oz but it didn't do anything so I didn't bother drinking the rest. I kept taking the Provigil for about a month without drinking and then I stopped using it because of the cost and after I stopped I didn't have any desire to drink alcohol either. Also the CPAP machine worked well enough that I wasn't sleepy during the day anyway. It seems like for me it was an easy way to get unaddicted form alcohol.

Here is an excellent page to check out regarding the issue of mind enhancement: http://network.nature.com/forums/naturenewsandopinion/816.

The short editorial includes many links to interesting articles and resources about mind enhancement, including a poll of scientists who use the relevant drugs.

After the editorial are four pages full of insightful discussion. Well-respected neuroscientists, including Barbara Sahakian and Sharon Morein-Zamir, participate and moderate the discussion.

Anyone who thinks this stuff is harmless should take a look at the FDA's first round of Black Box warnings which must now be included in patient information sheets for Provigil: http://www.fda.gov/cder/foi/label/2007/020717s020s013s018lbl.pdf

These warnings barely touch the surface of what has been coming out about this drug's lethal side effects. I should know. Early in 2007 after being on Provigil for a few short weeks, I awoke in a completely delirious mental state which my wife thought was some sort of sleepwalking episode but which turned out to be brain hypoxia - my brain was getting so little oxygen that I became like a person who was in the midst of drowning. At the ER they could not locate evidence of a heart attack, but found that I was in cardiogenic shock and suffering from acute kidney failure as a result. The odds of surviving cardiogenic shock alone are only about 20-30%, and that's if you develop it AT the hospital. I spent the next 9 days in a coma and on a mechanical respirator with little hope being revived, but somehow I did, and following a total of 32 days in an acute hospital including 22 in the ICU, I amazed all doctors involved, including my own primary care doctor, who had never seen anyone so thoroughly sick get so much better, in other words, live to see him again. I have been left with chronic renal failure and significant brain damage, and the lack of oxygen caused a subendocardial infarction, not to be confused with a myocardial infarction. If there are not a lot of people talking about the deadly nature of Provigil it is because of articles like this which tout Provigil as near-harmless, along with the fact that those who sustain the effects which I did usually can't talk much about their experiences, what with being dead and all.

I've taken this regularly for about a year now and have no negative things to report. It is not intended to replace sleep, so don't think you can take it and just stay up indefinitely without ill effects. I started it when I went to a night shift position, and still take it on the day shift. I don't skip my sleep, but if I don't get enough for some reason, I don't have to be miserable all day. I don't have a script, but purchase it online.
