guys I have tried fring on my iphone, Skype on WM6 on the htc 610, they are all just amateurish applications at best. When I first installed truphone on my Nokia E51 I was sceptical, but using it since 6 months has just blown me away. It is AWESOME --- Why -- Very high Quality app, outstanding Voice Quality, and lots of great features none of the Betamax, fring, Skype guys can offer. Like SMS over WiFi, (free SMS between two truphone's), Auto login to WiFi Hotspots you have been before (none of the WM6 rubbish with Skype), free GoogleTalk to truphone voice calls, free facebook to truphone voice via an app in facebook, SIM forwarding (very handy when you travel and adopt a local sim) - forwarding from your truphone number, auto top up of account, and since a while a sim4travel which is now owned by truphone,... and the RATES, I am not sure what you guys are talking about are dirt cheap for the quality you get, none of the other apps can do the cool stuff truphone offers. Mostly they leave you stranded. To me it is clear, truphone is a high quality app designed and made for the mobile not for the PC and this shows when you use the application.

I am using Truphone on my Nokia e60 and, afaik, you also get a (real) phone number assigned as well (UK or US #). You are able to call this number from any phone and will receive an incoming call on truphone (if the app is Online, otherwise it will forward to your "regular" mobile number.)

Sounds like a bad deal. For around $24 a year you can get unlimited calling with Skype and for a little more have a real phone number. No per minute calls! I've been using Skype on Windows Mobile since 2003. Isn't it about time for Skype on the iPhone?

Why does Skype always fvck things up? I would gladly pay $50 for a wifi skype for iPhone. To me, it would be a bargain.

That Apple would not include iChat makes a little sense, as they do not want to p!ss off the carriers, but skype?

I would not be surprised if skype/eBay is getting some backdoor money from the phone providers. That is the only explanation I would have for such a miserable failure. Or maybe they are masturbating over all the porn they get through webcam calls and don't really have time to do anything else.

In the long run, there will be only one VOIP network... today it's skype, with a bunch of competitors... like, ahem, google, microsoft, apple, open-source, and others. Skype is going to decline as rapidly as MySpace if it doesn't get its act together soon.

Meanwhile, everyone will go to fring.

As I have said for years.....Jajah will drop an application that will allow you to select any contact from your address book and send a call request to Jajah servers.

Both parties will receive calls and BAM!!! VOIP on the iPhone.

Now that is disruption.

sorri, this is so 12 months ago. 02 Atom Life with WM6 runs skype/skype out just fine - on wifi OR 3.5G.
Is it worth listening to Americans for advice on 3G matters?

Echoing Wheatie's comment: version 2.0 now allows you to have wifi on even with the phone in airplane mode. Having the iPhone in this mode will prevent incoming calls from terminating the voip call.

Truphone should make the app auto-switch the wifi/airplane mode settings on launch.

Thanks for this Michael. However, I too would like some kind of Skype Wi-Fi app. Do you know if they're planning on getting into this arena?

Packet8 Mobile Talk also brings VoIP to the iPhone. It's cheaper than Truphone and even works outside of Wifi areas.

Not to forget Fring's VoIP app for the iPhone which they launched already months ago. It lets you choose your VoIP provider freely and therefore most calls are even free if you choose e. g. Betamax like I do.
