by Jason Kincaid on July 11, 2008

Today marks the official launch of Apple’s 3G iPhone, and many people have been camping out in front of the company’s retail stores for days in anticipation of the phone’s release.

We’re streaming from the Apple Store in downtown Palo Alto so that all of you can live vicariously through us and experience the thrill of a real, live iPhone launch. We’ll begin filming at 7 and keep going until our batteries run out.

you guys and guys in line are pathetic

I agree. I don’t stand in line for rock concerts, let alone for a mobile phone…

The soundquality is aaaaawful!

where is the stupid update for orig iphone - i loaded 7.7 and it still says “you have the latest version - 1.1.4″

anyone else with this issue?

Hey, the video cannot be stopped! Please take care of your visitors (http://webshield.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-can-you-throw-away-your-visitors.html)

Waited in line since 5am. Took 1.5hrs to activate my phone. Now at home itunes is down, phones don’t work. Grrrrreaat!

Similar to watching monkeys flinging poo, the same IQ level.

Techcrunch seemed to report the Mozilla server issues during the Firefox 3.0 launch, why aren’t they covering the issues that Apple seems to be having with the huge demand for upgrading 1.0 phones to 2.0 and new activations? People have apparently been without their phones for hours now due to incomplete upgrades waiting for server access to complete!

Monkey pooh fights are way more entertaining than this.

Only thing more pathetic than these guys in line is TechCrunch reporting on them.

We’re 8 hours ahead of you in the UK… so already done the queuing thing (duh, O2 ran out of 16GB models even though I was about 10th in the queue)…
but how come no one at TechCrunch is blogging about the massive failure of the iTunes store that’s barfing in the middle of iPhone 2.0 upgrades and leaving people with bricked phones? See

Those guys are bigger geeks than every star wars, start trek, and D&D nerd COMBINED. If only they had friends they can call when they get their phones (besides their parents).

Do people think Apple should be excused from server downtime? Just because they’re Apple and releasing a state-of-the-art product (version 2), doesn’t make them exempt from having server issues.

Also, I think it’s funny how people who are supposed to be at work actually skipped it for the release. What are you going to tell your boss when you get in?

Thanks for the video but the pause button aint working.

If Fisher-Price made a cell phone, it would be the iPhone.

holy crap i used to go to that store all the time when i was in high school.. nice memories.

It’s not that Apple is above having server issues, neither is Mozilla, but it’s the fact that Techcrunch whined like a little bitch about Firefox 3 delays but hasn’t said anything about Apple. Favoritism? I think so. Typically of Apple fanatics. Be a fan, not a revolting sycophant. Always remember that Apple has all of the monopolistic actions that people came to hate about Microsoft.

i was waiting to get my shiny new iphone i really love it the 3g rocks, im so happy it was paid for by free iphone swap.com crew, they are everywhere they are mentioned on the front page article of miami herald thats how i found them

@9

If they have 2 available, it’s quite certain, it’s sold out. Sucker!

Apple screwed the pooch. Their servers are withering under the load, and I spent 3.5 hours in line only to have to bail without a new iPhone because a guy came out of the store saying it took him 2.5 hours just to complete the transaction and activate the phone.

enough already!
Our sole new apple i-phone user in the office is beside himself as someone has taken it and hidden it and no-one will confess, LOL.

Waiting till he starts crying to post video.

to much iphone news…. just clicked though 2 pages and barely found anything worth reading…sigh

Those people are too ugly for the iPhone. Steve will not be happy.

omg that vid is so annoying i cant stop it the pause button doesnt work please take it off pleaseeeeeeeee

i cant read techcrunch without hearing them yelling

Please tell me those people are actors! please!

nerds. not geeks. nerds.

Yeah, there are tons of bricked iphones around the world thanks to Apple’s botched upgrade process to the 2.0 software:

Going on one and a half hours trying to buy/activate my iPhone. We are on our second phone. ATT Wireless and Apple appear to have dropped the ball big time. What a joke.

Society needs help.

Argggh.. No connection to iTunes store.. AT&T handed me my iphone and said. We are not doing this for everyone, but go home and activate it yourself.. Sheesh now neither my old phone or new phone work. I hope I have a working phone when apple gets their act together..

Hmm…Apparently I can make an emergency call..

Wonder if that will ring thru to Mr Jobs

agree with # 23 jon. coverage has gotten out of hand. i guess you’re free to write about what you want but i’m also free to check out other tech blogs.

whats more pathetic is techcrunch posting consecutive posts about iPhone- an insignificant, overhyped, underpowered piece of sh*t. Wow, are you guys in apple’s payroll. all over gadget sites we all see iphone stuff. why dont you work and create news about startups. not iphone, which in itself is crap. you’re excited about iphone apps that have existed years and years ago in other cellphones/smart phones.

wow. seriously this blog is going to the drain.

Upgrade your phone and get bricked … now that’s cool, why didn’t I think of that!

This is the sole reason apple dropped idea of selling it online. It would miss all the hype and press created by frenzy people who have too much time in hand.iphone is great but not at all revolutionary. Blackberry when it was released first , it was revloutionary. iphone is only for direct consumers, not for business folks.

just left the line at westwood village/UCLA at&t store. store rep said only 50 iphone 3G in stock. there was about 100 people in line. i was at around 75. argh. they’re selling out. probably won’t get re-stocked for another week or two.

Is it just me, or does Kyte’s mobile app produce horrible quality?

jeez…

i guess i am toooooo bored of this iphone stuff and its hyped coverage here. I see that almost all of the last 10 posts at TC are iphone related. I will take a week break from TC, hopefully less iphone coverage by then.

God save me from the cult! These idiots are worshiping a corporation. This shiny gadget won’t grant you eternal life you know…

“Those people are too ugly for the iPhone. Steve will not be happy.”

Good one #24/cunchnugget :)!

“Those people are too ugly for the iPhone. Steve will not be happy.”

ROFL, as Bill said, nice one !

Wow an iPhone story!! It must be covering something worthy right? after all this is the 10,000th post on TC about the iphone, so it must be worth it right? Let’s look at the facts

- 3g! wow that must be new right? NO… Windows Mobile devices, Blackberrys and Palms have had 3G for YEARS. FAIL.

- GPS! I bet no other phone has GPS right? Windows Mobile devices, Blackberrys and Palms have had GPS for YEARS. FAIL.

- The ability to download and install 3rd party apps, wow no other phone can do that right? WRONG! Windows Mobile devices, Blackberrys and Palms have had the ability to create and get 3rd party apps for YEARS… not only that, you don’t need approval from Microsoft, RIM, or Palm to do so. FAIL.

- Exchange support! Wow no other phone has that right? (Do I even have to explain this one?) FAIL!

I’ve used devices that have done all of these thigs, plus play my media for YEARS. Way to be late to the party Steve.

Oh yeah, and the iphone is no longer the only one that has a full HTML browser..so there is nothing left

And your done…

Doesnt seem live, but more of recorded clip….

Hi Shiva,

It was live this morning and is archived now (the store opened at 8 AM PST). I’m sorry about the shaky camera, I was filming from a cell phone.

@43 - chill dooder. let the enema do its job.

OMG I hope TC at least gets some funding from Steve Jobs for this lick-a$$ coverage.
WTF Michael aren’t there any real things to right about anymore? I’m switching to Shel Israel if you’re continuing

I also got my upgrade to the 3G iphone for free, freeiphoneswap.com gave me cash for my old iphone they said they would be at the 5th ave apple store on sunday too. they also do this through thier website
