Overnight Apple released the App Store on iTunes, letting users download apps to their computers. But without the iPhone 2.0 software you couldn’t get them to your iPhone.
Now it looks like you can get that iPhone 2.0 software, too, and get the apps to your phone via an update found by MacRumors. You have to download it manually via this link.
Use caution, however. To install the software after it has downloaded, remove the .zip file extension and hit the option key while asking iTunes to look for iPhone updates. And the software will erase all data on your phone. Apple says they will create a one-time media backup of the data. But I’m still downloading the update and haven’t tried it yet. I’ll update this post when I have.
Update: I’m in process of updating to 2.0 now. So far so good.
Update2: I can confirm this worked perfectly for me. My iPhone is now running v2.0 of the software and the apps I’ve downloaded work. Video is below, and more videos are embedded in the comments below.
Has anyone had any luck connecting to itunes yet? Been trying for the last 5 hours. I need my phone back I got calls to make!!!!

I have tried for about 4 hours and nothing works… endless
accessing itunes store.. then… we could not complete your itunes store request. the network connection time out.

This sucks big time… I still havent been able to access the itunes store. All I been getting is this message saying… “We could not complete your Itunes store request. The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, then try again.. I need my iphone back. I need to make phone calls… This things is useless right now… And I’m without a phone….

Do not disconnect the phone. Once you get the error message, click OK, click some other tab and click again on IPhone.

Finally got mine a 4-1/2 hours. I just kept clearing the message and selecting music or another category on the tree, and then back to my phone. Good luck…
I finally made it through after 4+ hrs, keep refreshing! It works!
Yay!!! Finally!!! Mine is syncing now. After almost 6 hours!! I kept switching between music and iphone after a million tries (and 6hrs) it got through.

Just got my iphone updating after a long time flicking between music and iphone then tried flicking between itunes store and iphone and worked first time don’t know if this was luck but hope it works for you guys.
Does anyone know why mine says that the latest version is the 1.1.4 update?

@Annie try upgrading your version of iTunes first. 7.6.2 tells you that the most recent is 1.1.4. I had to upgrade to get 2.0

It’s finally synching…restoring music and video right now…and it only took 7 hours.

Finally after 6 hours. After trying clicking on itunes and iphone for all this time, what I did was unpluged the iphone, played around with sliding and stuff, dialed some numbers (which didn’t work obviously)and then pluged the iphone back in. Then it magically worked!!!
@Annie go to help->about if your on windows….because i thought that I had updated as well, but the version still said 7.6.2. I had to completely uninstall and reinstall in order to download it. Try going to engadget and downloading it manually if that doesnt work.

guys, after reading these posts, its a sad commentary on our general attitude. I say “our”, b/c I’m right there too. Does it strike anyone as a bit odd that (for many of us) we went outside the channels that apple set up, got our update from a non-conventional source and then complain when it does not work smoothly? (obviously if you got your update through itunes, I’m not talking to you)

Just leave your phone plugged into your computer and leave itunes up. The servers are back up now. My “old” iphone has been bricked since this am. Kept getting connection errors and others. Tried everything suggested online. I have been trying all day long - finally left and went to walmart for an hour. Came back and everything is back up. Just be patient.

my iTunes screen has had a pop-up window on it for 7 hours now stating: “Verifying iPhone Software”, and the screen on my iPhone has been stuck on the diagram of the usb cord with the arrow indicating to connect to iTunes. wtf is going on?? do i just keep waiting???

I just finished updating successfully, got a message that the iPhone was restarting and everything looked great until…ALL OF MY PHOTOS, TEXT MESSAGES, EMAIL ACCOUNTS AND SETTINGS GONE. EVERYTHING!!! I am devistated. I want my old phone back. I don’t know what to do. It’s a very sad day in my world.
I updated my old iphone to 2.0 and none of the app store applications work, they launch and then nothing happens it takes me right back to the home screen.
Anyone experienced that type of problem
DT, Yes, I’m having the same problem. Applications launch and then they show their initial screen, but then just end and takes me back the home screen. Power cycling the iPhone does not fix the problem….
Just letting you guys I live in Australia and had a jailbroken and unlocked iPhone since last November. Worked fine all these time under v.1.14 (Australia did not have the iPhone officially until the 3G came a week ago). I hate contracts and did not want to go with any of the rip-off carriers for that reason even if I could allow this. Updated two days ago to v.2.0 using the available 5A347 ipsw file. It was a bog mistake, as my iPhone got bricked. After about 20 minutes it comes with a message that I have SIM card from unauthorised carrier (in my case I used the best deals from Virgin mobile). The upsetting thing is that absolutely nothing works. Apple (whom I respect and admire for their nice designs and work) should have been a bit fair and at least allow for the iPhone to be used as iPod touch, at least. I did not steal the iPhone, I bought it over the Internet and paid with hard earned money. This gives me a bit of “Microsoft” bitter taste in my mouth about Apple. It shouldn’t be like that. Anyway, just wanted to let everybody that might be in a similar situation, I then searched high and low and found this site http://www.iphoneunlocking.org.uk who are claiming they can unlock any iphone for 23 Pounds. I stupidly paid for the download, and no matter what I tried it did not work. I even sent a few e-mails to their support e-mail address, where they claim they will respond within 4 hours, and you have life time support, bla-bla-bla. No response still, and I don’t expect I will get it.
So guys, DO NOT USE THESE FALSE ADVERTISING WEB SITES.
I am only hoping the Dev Team may come up with something soon.
I love Apple, but I will never buy iPhone under a contract with a carrier which I don’t like.
