Overnight Apple released the App Store on iTunes, letting users download apps to their computers. But without the iPhone 2.0 software you couldn’t get them to your iPhone.
Now it looks like you can get that iPhone 2.0 software, too, and get the apps to your phone via an update found by MacRumors. You have to download it manually via this link.
Use caution, however. To install the software after it has downloaded, remove the .zip file extension and hit the option key while asking iTunes to look for iPhone updates. And the software will erase all data on your phone. Apple says they will create a one-time media backup of the data. But I’m still downloading the update and haven’t tried it yet. I’ll update this post when I have.
Update: I’m in process of updating to 2.0 now. So far so good.
Update2: I can confirm this worked perfectly for me. My iPhone is now running v2.0 of the software and the apps I’ve downloaded work. Video is below, and more videos are embedded in the comments below.

When i click try to get the 2.0 update on my iphone, when i plug it in it says that the network connection settings were wrong, what should they be and what should i do.
Dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON FOR FREAK’S SAKE???????????????? PHONE’S DEAD , BEEN HALF AN HOUR NOW!!!
It keeps trying to access the iTunes store and then a message pops up saying my connection timed out…WTF!!! Apple better fix this crap.
And who knows how long the servers will be done too.
Great job w/ the post will.
Apples servers are down till further notice there is nothing anyone can do but wait.
yeah, i’m getting the reset error too. their servers must just be completely clogged. 6 million plus requests going through must be killing them. anyway, seems like its just a matter of time… good thing i have some.
How long does this take? How did they have no idea of the demand for the software/activation?
F’ing n00bs over at apple.
This happened to me last year.
It took 2 days to activate my phone.
They should have had 1st gen iphone users able to update 2 days ago, but they thought they could handle every single iphone user at once. Well they thought wrong.
IDIOTS!
They stop selling the phone for 3 months to up the demand. Wait months to upgrade the poor first run of the software. Then are stupid enough to not put enough servers online to handle the demand. I would have expected better from Apple.
It’s outrageous. My phone is now unusable due to their mistakes. I’m going to raise hell if this isn’t resolved shortly.
Good job Apple, you have now entered the ranks of Microsoft with crap updates.
I finally got my update after trying for 2 hours.
Did it just go through? Did you do anything special or just retry after it timed out?
Just like everyone else posting here, I have been carrying a $400 paper weight. We are going on 4 hours now!!!
WTF. Seriously this is suppose to be a business phone now and how can anyone do business with their phones down like this. I hope Apple does something quick!
XP user here with 1st gen iPhone which is hopefully only temporarily bricked. I get the same messages that everyone else is - “could not complete your itunes store request.” I’ve rebooted, restarted, re-opened iTunes several times. My iphone just shows the connect to iTunes screen and when I connect it, it shows “ipod” but not the custome name I’d give for it and it won’t give a summary screen.
Thanks Apple. Or should We begin calling it MicroApple, or AppleSoft?
i definitely wont update again on launch day.
I would get one of the many errors while trying to connect to the itunes store then click on music like the previous post said, then it finally updated.
Yeah - not a chance. I can’t express how unprofessional this is of a industry leader.
Completely dropped the ball.
It feels like dialing a number for a contest and constantly getting a busy signal hoping you are the 1000th caller or something.
or a very disappointing Christmas morning.
BAHAHA. Well said. Is it going to be me?! It is, is it!?
It isn’t hard to have smooth sailing when 10% of the computer world uses your products. Bill Gates is laughing it up right now, with Balmer on the other end of their Windows Mobile OS phones.
I just finally got through with Apple tech support. They said the servers are DOWN not just overloaded, so going back and forth between music and iphone, my not help at the moment…..
So are the servers completely down, like no one is getting the update? is it even worth it to keep trying? I have literally been clicking back and forth between the music and iphone tab since 630 am pacific time. i still have an iBrick… Does anybody have any other tips or tricks. been at it 3.5 hours. I need to get on with my life!!!!!!
What a joke. We waited and waited and waited and this is the reward.
Seriously? They couldn’t have anticipated this and done a phased roll-out? I had no idea that it would kill my current iPhone. I’m totally FUBAR right now. Can’t really conduct business without a phone. If I don’t have a phone by the end of the hour, I’m in deep shiz.
I say those of us in Silicon Valley head over to the Apple headquarters and stand outside with “Applesoft” signs.
This is possibly one of the most annoying things that could happen right now. I’m talking to friends who already have their 2.0 updates and I’m sitting here with this dead piece of crap for right now.
How could apple NOT plan for this?
I can’t even get someone on the phone to talk me through some of this…
My Itunes came up but then it times out again. I got all excited for nothing. Get your S#(t together Apple.
Now after that my iphone is saying that it is activated/?? and restoring from backup?
I just got it. Just short of 4 hours. Keep trying. Good luck.!!!!!!
SHIZNIT!! Had apple been as big a company as Microsoft, it woulda been 10 times worse!!!!!
AP did you do anything out of the ordinary or just kept trying?
GOT IT! It only took about 30 minutes but I got it. Good luck kids.
HEY EVERYONE!!! FOLLOW ME!!!

I have all the new stuff I just can’t connect to itunes…weird.
Well my iPhone is finally activated (4 hrs 40 mins down) but since I had to go into work and I do all my syncing from the home computer, now I have no contacts!!!
mine finally reactivated - now backing up - not sure if i have 2.0 or not yet.
Will let you kow
This is a joke. Same error here. This is for all the stupid mac users that think that macs were invulnerable. I can believe the lack of preparation. This amateur hour. I’ve been dealing with windows my whole life and I thought that I was prepared for everything. Still this is lamer than everything Microsoft ever put us thru.
hey.. remember those commercials with those two losers, and one of the losers with an apple was always doggin the other loser cause he used windows… you guys remember that… cause i do
that loser with an apple must feel like an ass right now…..
“We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection timed out”
I ran the update even though it took some coercion to get things installed. Now my phone is locked on “emergency call mode” only. Guess I should have seen this one coming - sigh.
after trying update since 8am, i have finally completed the update. as other have said, just keep trying until you get through.
I’m trying from 8 A.M. but am still unable to connect to itunes store.
The people who already got it: what did you guys do???
any tricks?
my iphone restored twice…and is now syncing. lets see how this goes…
OMG!!! It’s been 5 hours and I’m still not up!!! Anyone else’s took that long too????
3+ here AURI. itunes is “Restoring iTunes Music and videos…” at the moment.
Before this, i had 3 hours of the connect to itunes icon on my screen, and no phone service.
as if selling a $700 phone then dropping the price $300, or selling a crappy mp3 version of the iphone for the same price…wasnt embarassing enough… they have this to add to their “colorful” resume…. :I
I finally got it activated!!! -2:14 PM, New York
I have everything 2.0 offers! I just can’t get into itunes anymore…
It just keeps saying that “We could not complete your itunes store request. The connection was reset.
Make sure you network connection is active and try again.”
