Ok, iPhone Users, We Are Ready To Roll With 2.0
by Michael Arrington on July 10, 2008

Overnight Apple released the App Store on iTunes, letting users download apps to their computers. But without the iPhone 2.0 software you couldn’t get them to your iPhone.

Now it looks like you can get that iPhone 2.0 software, too, and get the apps to your phone via an update found by MacRumors. You have to download it manually via this link.

Use caution, however. To install the software after it has downloaded, remove the .zip file extension and hit the option key while asking iTunes to look for iPhone updates. And the software will erase all data on your phone. Apple says they will create a one-time media backup of the data. But I’m still downloading the update and haven’t tried it yet. I’ll update this post when I have.

Update: I’m in process of updating to 2.0 now. So far so good.

Update2: I can confirm this worked perfectly for me. My iPhone is now running v2.0 of the software and the apps I’ve downloaded work. Video is below, and more videos are embedded in the comments below.

Make sure you back up/sync before you install!!! I just lost all the data from my last back up 6 months ago. :(

When I press option for the update (MAC OS) it just leads me to the downloaded zip file with no file path for the software. Every file is a dead end with the exception of one .dmg that asks for a password. What am I missing?

Vista user here — the manual 2.0 update did NOT work and I had to restore from backup.

If sync manually (without recent backup) and are on Vista don’t do the update!!

XP user here. Error code 5. If anybody figures out a workaround let me know… :(

It worked for me on Vista 32-bit. Here’s my process:
1. Install iTunes 7.7
2. Download from the link provided in the post.
2a. The file I downloaded was not a .zip but already had the .ipsw extension. Not sure why or what that means.
3. Sync
4. Use the Shift+Check for Update to locate the file.
5. Be very very patient while it updates. Extreme patience required as it looks like it’s not working. (took about 30 minutes in total).
6. After it updates, iTunes will think it’s a new phone and give you the option to Restore from earlier backup. I did this and it keeps firmware 2.0, but restores your settings. I haven’t noticed anything gone, and it did restore my Contacts even though I don’t sync them with anything.

As far as I can tell everything works.

Vista user : downloaded 2.0, iPhone began the update process and then crashed badly. Was unable to operate phone at all until iTunes thankfully restored the 1.1.4 software automatically, and restored all the info from backup. I’ve read elsewhere that these problems may be due to this software being intended for 3G phones, but it’s confusing why some people are having major problems and others are having none. Is there a theme at all? e.g. all the problems occur when running the update on Windows? (XP or Vista). (My phone is not jailbroken or anything like that). We’ll see what happens tomorrow, I guess. Not Apple’s best day (Mobile Me has been all over the place too) - why don’t they keep all this stuff locked away until it’s actually ready? Or are they using all the eager beavers to do a final check for errors?

thanks for being on top of all this stuff. great reference

Just to echo this again, for Vista users to get around the error 5 you need to first download and install iTunes 7.7:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

PC USERS

After loading 7.7, SHFT+CTRL then click on UPDATE.

have downloaded the file several times, not seeing the .zip getting .ipsw, but not working. keeps telling me 1.1.4 is the latest version. am on a mac, have 7.7, wtf i am about to lose my mind, can someone help me out before i jump

Worked for me (OSX) - went through the update process & took a LONG time, then when it rebooted it asked if it was a new phone or if it should restore from previous backup.

I hit restore and voila! it resynced all my contacts, music, etc — and added the app store icon. iTunes shows iphone software version 2.0.

CAN THIS BE USED ON THE IPOD TOUCH???????????????????????????

WINDOWS USERS : Hold CTRL+SHIFT to browse to the downloaded 2.0 update file

Err… CTRL+ALT click

Updated to 7.7 before trying. Got unknown error and it gives me an error message when I try to restore 1.1.4. Looks like I’m in serious trouble.

Updated to .7.7 and installed 2.0.

Now is it locked again (did not think about that when installing).
When trying to restore, it got locked in DFU mode.

What to do?

Hi Guys!!! Has any one tried this on an unlocked iPhone. I downloaded the software already and just a bit worried to install!!!!

So eager to get this installed.. but Im using the phone in Hong Kong

how long is update taking others? mine is “stuck” on “accessing itunes store” and no longer displays my iphone name. it just says “iPhone”. should i unplug and plug back in?

I’m having the same problem, but now I’m getting an error, not able to connect to itunes store…… dead phone for now :(

“We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-9838). Please try again later. :(

same error message.

after clicking on music, then back to iphone under devices i received…

“we could not complete your itunes store request. the network connection was reset. make sure the network connection is active and try again.”

i’m able to access the internet from every other area of itunes, safari, etc.

any suggestions?

ERROR MESSAGES OUT THE BUTT……. is itunes overloaded?

Same error for me

same error for me…

Itunes must be overloaded - I’ve been “Accessing ITunes Store” for the past 15 minutes!

I have used iTunes to get the 2.0 software, but I keep getting an “unknown error.” As if the error is really unknown…

(-9838) is the number that I get, and the error message states–

We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-9838).

Same here…..”we could not complete your itunes store request. The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, then try again”……..this suckkkkks

I have downloaded the 2.0 software update and now my iphone does not work. Every time I connect it to itunes I receive an unknown error -9838 what is going on this is crazy my phone is dead in the water

just spoke with apple iphone support. their “server is down” because it’s been “overloaded”. They said there’s nothing they can do to get the iphone to work until it syncs (my word) with their server. no phone service for awhile…

9838… same stuff.. no joy. Yet.

Actually, my iPhone has 2.0 on it, but I can’t connect to the iTunes on the mac. However, it the iPhone did download an app over the air just fine…

Go figure. Must be an iTunes server that is down and not the app server. If the update to 2.0 “took,” try downloading apps from the phone…

If your 2.0 update is hanging, try restarting your whole system with the iPhone in it’s cradle. I did this and the update and restore finally completed.

iTunes error –9838 is still occurring, but at least I have full use of the phone.

Same here, no phone.

Seems like someone might have anticipated this? Guess not.

Same problem for me. Hanging no matter if I try to restore legal 1.1.4, jailbroken 1.1.4 or 2.0. damn apple, i need my phone back you chumps!

well…itunes has gone from immediately giving an error message when i plug in my phone, to “accessing itunes store’ for about 1.5 minutes before handing me an error.
Give me back my phone.

Yup. Me too. I get an error (-4) after it tries “Accessing iTunes Store” for about 5 minutes. I click on Music and then back to iPhone and it sits “Accessing iTunes Store”. Rinse and repeat.

I have had the exact problem as many of you with the error message (9838). I was inspired by hansbrixx to keep trying by clicking on music and then clicking back on iphone. It took several tries, but finally the update went through. My phone is back and better than ever.

itunes won’t even back mine up. It gets to the backup phase and gives me “an error occurred while backing up your iphone (-37).” I have more than enough space on my hard drive for this, if it’s doing a full backup. Nothing on apple support about this message either. Stellar.

@Josiah

Yeah sounds like a good bet to just keep trying to connect. Im going to call apple support in a bit here though if it doesn’t go through. I’m supposed to go on a business trip, flying out later tonight….better be back by then or else I have to switch back to my sony ericson :(

Mine also just completed after 45 minutes of no phone….I’ve been sweating it since I have a phone screen for a job in 5 minutes.

I’ve been trying since 630 PST… I had to bring my laptop to work. Please help. So many errors…

I also got the error:
we could not complete your itune store request. network connection was reset

anybody knows how/when it will be fixed
:((

A friend in line in Dallas said they abandoned in store activation?
I thought that was the only way to activate the 3G?
hrmmm.

I’M HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM!!

“The server is overwhelmed because the new iphone came out today as well as the software update so my supervisor says to try later tonight or tomorrow morning”

SUXORZ

On hold for iphone support for 55 minutes…. then my blackberry crapped out…

I am having the same “could not find your network connection” garbage message. Come on Steve. I drop $399 on a phone and you can’t get an update correct? Some system admin somewhere is sweating bullets!

waited 40 min, finally working… Luckily I have some time left before offices closes here in UK!!
