Know that we are all probably trying to install 2.0 right now and many of us will probably fail – Michael *ahem* – here is how to save yourself if you get a bad update.
Symptoms: The firmware doesn’t flash correctly and you have an iPhone or Touch caught in a horrible boot cycle that consistently fails. Sometimes it draws junk on the screen, which is basically the kernel trying to start and then failing and retrying. These instructions are very simple but you have to be patient.
1. Hold down power AND home (the round button) until the phone turns off completely. Touch nothing else. Keep holding those buttons.
2. Once you’re in a reboot cycle, let go of power. Hold home down for two minutes.
3. Your iPhone/Touch may freeze with a blank screen. Do not panic or call your lawyer. Connect it to your Mac or PC and see if iTunes detects it in restore mode. Restore to the previous good firmware.
4. If this fails, disconnect from iTunes and repeat these steps. Do not lose patience. Sometimes it doesn’t work the first time. Sometimes it take a few turns to get it.

That’s similar to the reboot on the ipod.
Thank you. This procedure still works for the new software. (Nov/09)
if by ipod you mean the ipod touch, yes. However, this is almost completely different from the standard ipods.
Throwing them on the ground real hard has been working for me.
I am not quite sure how to remove the .zip file from the link you sent to update
try stepping on it. it gets all the bad juju out.
I am in Recovery Mode now (icon: chord -> plug -> arrow -> itunes), but when I try to recover it reboots and simply stays at the “apple and spinning circle” thingy
Any idea?
(wanted to update from beta8 to the “final” 2.0)
Worth noting when you’re trying to restore (or preferably, before): the backup file made on your mac when syncing the iPhone is excluded from Time Machine backups. So if (for some reason) that backup gets overwritten, you’ll need another backup to restore all your settings (Calendar, Contacts, etc. are backed up into the respective applications).
@Marc – this isn’t recovery mode. The phone screen should be blank.
try to slap the bitch around with a large trout, it may work
lol SOMEONE has spent alotta time on IRC….
Is this Steve’s version of the “blue” screen of death? If so, he has broken the mold for ambiguity and recourse!
try dunking it in water.
I have tried this god know how many times, and it still wont work… Does anybody here have any other ideas?

Amy ideea?
FIXED! My phone was bricked… bad! 2008-July-14. (first gen iPhone, not the 3g) It wouldn’t get recognized by the laptop as a viable USB plugin, iTunes would freeze, couldn’t turn phone on or off… tried the reboot many times and it just got as far as the black screen with the white apple on it. I’m on the firmware 2.0. I logged two hours on two different phone calls to Apple Care. They couldn’t fix. However, in STEP-2 of the directions above at top of this page, the Apple Care folks didn’t have me keep holding the HOME button for 2 minutes (they said to hold for 20 seconds). Not sure if this is coincidence or the real reason, but the phone finally went from brick to successfully reboot mode. Connected to dock, iTunes recognized it. Asked me to RESTORE. 3 hours to restore all 8 Gig. All is good.
I’m just waiting for them to officially release the firmware/software update so I don’t have to restore or do all the crazy manual file shenanigans to get it. I live in constant fear of bricking my iPhone so I’m going to be a square and do everything by the book. That way, they can’t fault me if the damn thing does brick up.
I used PC Suite for iPhone and deleted the most recently installed apps untill the phone rebooted. Seems OK.
fanxx!!

my 3g (not jailbroken) starts up with the apple logo then it goes away but the background the logo has is still there, it stays that way for 5 mins or so then it tries again. is this a bad boot cycle?
This didn’t work for me. But what did work was this:
1. Make sure your phone is turned off.
2. After the phone is confirmed to be off press and hold the home button for at least 10 seconds.
3. After at least ten seconds insert your usb cable that should be plugged into your computer with itunes closed into the phone.
4. The apple logo should pop up and don’t let go of the home button until you see the connect to itunes screen,
5. Then itunes should pop up and restore your phone.
TJs comment was spot on. First try and it now works like a charm.
Thanks

I can not get any response at all the phone went blank durning blackra1n first screen went white then powered down and no matter how long you hold the buttons down there is no sign of life? Please help? email me at bdouglas1011@at.net if you have any sugestions.
THANK YOU so much for posting this! I panicked for TWO days before finding this site, trying everything. I made the mistake of putting it in “DFU” mode by holding for 10 seconds, instead of two minutes.
Again, Thank you so much for saving me a trip to the Apple store!
