Guy Kawasaki’s Truemors Gets Acquired By NowPublic
by Michael Arrington on July 10, 2008

Truemors, a rumor site launched by Guy Kawasaki in May 2007, has been acquired. The buyer is NowPublic, a “participatory news site” that we covered last year when they raised their second round of financing. Kawasaki is joining the company’s advisory board as well.

The terms of the deal aren’t being disclosed, but my guess is that it’s very likely to be a tiny acquisition. Truemors remains a niche within a niche, with flatish traffic.

Now if Kawasaki can sell his other experimental startup, AllTop, I’ll be impressed. Its so awful its kind of cool.

Yeah! After 12 years as a VC, Kawasaki has a liquidity event. Congrats!

Rumors are prematurely born facts :)

I hear $1.2 million

Alltop is a cheap popurls rippoff - not an experiment

Tried going to the site does not work …

guy is one of most overhype individuals in the history of the web

i think part of the hype is due to his cool name

@4 - if its $1.2M that’s insane - didn’t he make the site for like $20k or something?

Mike

They didn’t buy the Truemors website per se they bought Kawasaki!! Having him on the board as a PR/hype machine is tremendous for NowPublic!

Mike - Yay!

I love Guy, and truemors is great. but let’s not all get over excited.

What I would really like to hear is Loren Feldman’s take on this.

This is a great acquisition.

That’s my boy!

Loren, do you have a hissy fit video about Truemors…i’d love to see it

wow that’s truly great after all. May be someday people like me also make a fortune with our little websites developed in our free time ;)

They were going to buy WikiLeaks or truemors, but ended up going with Truemors since there was a lot less true content.

I wonder if the acquisition rumors for Truemors was actually posted on Truemors? If not, then clearly the site is useless.

I am the CEO of NowPublic and co-founder. I don’t want to skewer the rumour mill at all, but we approximately paid 120 million for Truemors give or take a few million. But really, who is counting?

And seriously, have you seen Guy? He is the best looking guy in the tech biz….of course we were going to acquire his company. Jeez. :)

We are proud to have Truemors part of the NowPublic team going forward. Was really very value add for us to have the new editorial base and focus.

Okay, okay…we actually paid 100 million.

If you see Guy driving around in his new Maserati and velour jump suit…just play coy.

lol @Its so awful its kind of cool.

My bid is 100 euros. Is it enough?

is it the first of april today :p

congratz to all involved, I hope it wasn’t a loss.

Actually, the price was 7 magic beans, which we swear will grow into massive beanstalks. These beanstalks will lead to Web 3.0. For real.

good for him, never really been on treumors but i love alltop, i would bet that gets sold pretty soon too. Guy knows how to make simple yet truly useful products that people talk about. i think that’s what it come’s down to.

Seriously, they better have been paid in twinkys cause it ain’t worth any cash. The site blows and was just hyped over nothing.

The price was 80k -
