Gmail’s Mysterious Grey Box
by Michael Arrington on July 6, 2008

There’s a small grey box rendered in an iFrame in the top left hand corner of Gmail, and TechCrunchIT is trying to figure out what it is. The icon is a ten by ten pixel graphic with a diagonal line across it, with one half in black and the other in gray. It isn’t an inline image, as you can not highlite it or select it in your browser, nor right-click on it. There is also no reference to the image within the style sheet for Gmail.

So what is it? Since it’s being rendered in an iFrame it’s difficult to say. We’ve been emailing back and forth with Google since Wednesday but so far they haven’t said what it is. What’s your best conspiracy theory? The most elaborate/entertaining or most accurate comment (on TechCrunchIT) gets a free TechCrunch Tshirt.

Gmail just went down for five minutes (11:35am edt) and now the box is gone.
Conspiracy!? Or just coincidence…

I can’t believe I’m commenting on this. Embarrassed.

May be google is experimenting browser cache capabilities in rendering page over and over again. There was one such experimentation done by yahoo embedding pixel sized image on their homepage or may be we are just fascinated by whatever google does.

this black point work on firefox , and dont work on IE
i think :”
when page display we see a page ( real page on book ) that we can leaf or turnover the page … it is very nice graphic page that we can turnover this page and will see other next page

When the final version of Gmail is out (currently beta), this folded sheet will be unfolded and you will see the new Gmail look.

I grabbed it and peeled it back to see and now I can’t get it back together. I ruined my browser.

they’re changing the pages ! beta to alpha

Since this appears in Firefox, but not in IE, my conspiracy theory is this:

Google is considering a hostile takeover of Mozilla. They think that Mozilla fits their corporate mission more closely than any other company. Mozilla, however, is trying to fend off the Google overlords. They have maliciously hacked into Google’s Gmail web server, and attempted to disable it. While Google was able to avert this attempt (thank goodness), and they decided to launch a counter attack. They’ve added a hidden frame to Firefox whenever Gmail is called up. They will slowly peel Gmail off of the browser. While it is still in the early stages, I expect this peeling to grow until it renders Firefox unusable by any and all Gmail users. Unless of course Mozilla gives in to the takeover, at which point all we be restored.

Ah, corporate espionage and tampering at its finest!

I think its loading a bulk synchronous parallel.. Which (if i am right) is usefull for local computer actions, this means google will save your email concept on time, it will synchronice very fast if your logged twice on differente computers, and it will check less often your email if your on a very slow connection.. I heard i can win something?

Hopefully i am right, Greets

It’s gone now….
