Voicemail is still the most productive communication service available to companies. Why, two main reasons; 1st, its the lowest common denomenator, not everyone uses a blackberry, text or video, or a computer when they travel, but everyone has a phone, and 2nd, people can speak while driving, walking thru airports, riding in a cab to an appointment, but they can't type as fast or while they are on the go. Another big reason, is the ability to send one message to a large group of users, and know that it won't get stuck in a spam filter.

BTW, voice mail started in the late 70s, and was very common place by the mid 80s, so I don't understand your reference to the 90s.

I don't agree. As an enterprise IT working in the health care industry I would be totally lost without voice mail. I also rely heavily on all of the "other" forms of communication. I'd also be lost without my BlackBerry. However, for those who rely heavily on 3rd party systems support, voice mail is still very much a must have, on both sides of the isle. Our environments vendors, GE Health care, Seimens, etc... are also just as reliant on voice mail as we. With the proliferation and growth in technology in health care it is many times as difficult to get a response from email as it is to just push a couple numbers and "speak it out". I'd think corporations like Cisco might disagree as well. Although PBXs as designed in the past are becoming legacy the enterprise is running billions of dollars strong.
I think the defining segment here is "what is my need". Personally speaking, I can "personally" do without voicemai. Corporately speaking I'd sink without it.
Regards.

[...] Voicemail Transcription: Google also added a nifty transcription feature (which is using the same subscription service as Google 411) for voicemails. All voicemails are transcribed easily saved into the system and searchable. Users can add notes or tags to voicemails and each transcription details how confident Google is about the success of voice transcription; Google Voice highlights word in lighter color that they are not confident were subscribed properly. And transcription takes about 30 seconds to be seen in the system from the end of a voicemail. All in all, Google may have unkilled the dreaded voicemail. [...]

I saw this coming in the early 1990s when kids were more hooked into video games then humans.
American kids become more and more antisocial every year and the sad thing is they don't even know it.....

Voicemail is great because I don't need a computer to access it. Plus, I don't have to pay extra to use it.
Secondly, there's no guessing what kind of emotion they are communicating.

This "Bridge Burning" mentality always makes me laugh...Conformity is the only outcome. CONFORMITY SUCKS!!

I know this is a very old thread, and I actually agree 100% with what you're saying, but I thought I might point out the irony of your misusing the word 'annunciate'. I believe you mean 'enunciate'.
