While at Dyson HQ, I had the pleasure, once again, of interviewing the man himself. I had to ask what his thoughts were on the iPhone, and James’ answers were both entertaining and interesting.
I have an iPhone and a BlackBerry. And I have to confess that I use the BlackBerry more. But I really wanted to like the iPhone because it’s thin—one of the clever things about it—thinner than any other phone, and fits easily in your pocket. I find that a nuisance if you’re going to a function or whatever it is. I really like that about it.
I hate the touchscreen. That’s my biggest complaint. I love the weather, really good. Maps are brilliant. The way you are supposed to use it, I really like. I’m not sure about having to slide that thing across every time you answer a phone call. As a way of locking the screen, I accept that because it’s important.

Hey fix your HTML
You’re having some html problems in the article.
peter i think you need more tutorials in html
was that news? I mean seriously, were you high when you posted this? Take this down.
I already commented on this yesterday.
Give Dyson an iPhone with a real, sliding keyboard and he’ll be happy-happy-happy.
Dyson? Is Arrington starting Vacuum Crunch?
Of cause he uses the blackberry more, if you are running any kind of serious business, the iPhone just doesn’t do the job.
Where is fx. Copy Paste ??? I think steve jobs has been sleeping under a rock
WAKE UP APPLE
finally a Crunchgrear lead on Techcrunch that is actually worth following…
excellent quote and good find
What a waste of time. He sounds like a 8th grader reviewing the IP.
We know this guy’s voice from the Dyson commercials and can totally hear him saying these things..word for word.
I don’t think that his opinions had anything of real value that I didn’t already know myself. If you want some REALLY interesting news, check this out… http://www.readtheanswer.com/index.php?RTA=web2
Why is the vacuum guy supposed to be an expert on phones?
btw- his product sucks (get it??)
@Ken 13, His products do actually suck, and not in the literal sense. they break down a lot. PS you wont find that in the advertising or manual.
@Ray agreed. His product is a flimsy piece of garbage that costs twice what it should. Not that that effects his opinion of the iphone though…
I’m really tired of iPhone this and iPhone that. A good analogy for that is if people made web sites that only worked on Macs. Most of us wouldn’t care. The iPhone is cool and all but for most people, the Blackberry is much better. Please stop having an orgasm everytime you find sometime to say about the iPhone.
Dyson’s products are overpriced crap according to consumer reports.
Man, I have both too. A bb 8830 and iPhone. I LOVE typing on the virtual keyboard so much better than the physical keyboard. And I’ve had BB since the 850s when there wasn’t even a phone on them. iPhone and its safari just kills the bb web browser. bb web browser is completely unusable.!!
Nice shot of Mr. Dyson there. Just curious, is he wearing a portable rug designed to resemble a sweater? I can see how wearing something like that could be handy in his line of work.
Wow - interviewing vacuum guys?
Horrible post.
I’ve always thought that Dyson vacuums were cool, but a bit difficult for people to use the accessories.
For instance, on an upright Dyson Vacuum it takes 4 steps just to access the hose.
Step 1: Flip open the shaft top
Step 2: Extend the extension shaft
Step 3: Release the hose
Step 4: Extend the hose and attach an accessory.
You have to that every time you want to switch from upright vacuum to handheld hose. Now, THAT’s a usability issue in my book.
I find it ironic that Dyson publicly criticizes the iPhone when he’s got a lot of similar problems with his own vacuum.
He may own a BlackBerry and an iPhone….but now I’m thinking that I should own a Hoover to go along with my Dyson!
The creator of Dyson doesn’t carry much weight when it comes to reviewing cell phones
Jaysus. The Dyson vacuum I have has been the worst piece of machinery I have ever owned.
Ergo, I will never buy a BlackBerry.
I prefer the BB and dyson is way to expensive of a carpet sucker.
dyson is inspiring and innovative. I would love to sit down and pick his brain someday. I love my dyson!!
All your replies are pretty harsh. What have any of you ever made that got you $500m??? I’d say he has some clout on anything design related.
what a load of gash, what is this, Vacuum Cleaners 2.0, take this shit down, you should be ashamed of yourselves
Hahaha… what’s next? An article on Steve Jobs’ preference of vacuum cleaners?
@ Bobby: you are the first person I’ve seen who says they love the iPhone KB. Some people like it, others accept it, but LOVE it? That’s really surprising.
Dyson is passionate about design principles and the efficacy of engineering talent creation within the borders of the US and UK. That’s the real story.
Dyson is a great invento with great design ideas, and im sure he will come up with much better ideas than the iphone in the future
Hi,
Techcrunchers can be really slow!
I’m not sure of the situation in the U.s., but when I got one, it came with a 5 year guarantee as standard, and even beyond that they have goodwill for their customers, willing to go beyond what the law says they should.
In Mr. Dysons suitability to talk about the iPhones’ design, if people knew anything, they’d know that Dyson has been inventing and designing for a long time, not just vacuum-cleaners, he knows his stuff with all things design, he’s also an evangelist for industrial/design and engineering training and appreciation, and even founded a dedicated college for the cause.
His personal story is also one of adversity, facing off big corporations, almost becoming bankrupt and finally triumphing.
Yours kindly,
Shakir Razak
“Dyson’s products are overpriced crap according to consumer reports”.
Total crap! I presume you haven’t used one. Dyson shat on Hoover because he made a superior product that never lost suction, didn’t have a bag, and not only that cleaned the carpet much much better.
Dyson have invented a new type of hand dryer, these things are great, they actually dry your hands quickly.
I love apple, I have a Macbook and it just works.
However the iphone does not included standard things you expect on a mobile phone, such as photo messaging, setting your mp3 as a ring tone, etc. WHY? I would of bought the first one if it did everything a phone should do, and I will buy the 3g one if that is the case.
When will Mr Dyson invent a genious way to retract the power cord because the cord on my dyson gets so f’n twisted i cant even wrap it around the power cord apparatus.
I think iPhone is my phone and movie player, even the iPhone 3G here, video to iPhone 3G here http://www.daniusoft.com/video-to-iphone.html
