Reader Steve has been chatting with Apple.com CSRs today - he’s already talked to two - and they’ve both confirmed my worst fears: you will not be able to order the IP3G online and it will only be available in stores and it will be activated in-store, provided you wish to purchase it at contract prices (i.e. $199).
What does this mean? It means getting an unlocked iPhone will be incrementally harder and considerably more expensive. Even if you pay for the phone and cancel your contract for a $175 fee, the phone will cost around $500, all told. While this is good news for Apple and AT&T - the unlocking imperative just got quite expensive - it’s bad news for folks who haven’t yet gotten iPhones in their respective countries and/or T-Mobile fans who don’t want to switch to AT&T.

Except in the UK, where O2 (UK’s answer to AT&T) posted today on their site:
You’ll be able to purchase the iPhone online at o2.co.uk, in one or our high street stores or by calling O2. It will also be available at The Carphone Warehouse.
Unlocked iPhones are available in India right now at 500-600$ and this step would make them more costlier
It’s a little worse than this, actually.
Not only can you not activate/purchase online, but AT&T will control which line has the iPhone.

If you purchase an iPhone on a family account with a line that can do a hardware upgrade, it has to be the one that keeps the iPhone. SIM card swapping *may* be the way around this, but seems unlikely.
Anyone have any more info on this?
Here in Germany, I pre-ordered my iPhone online from T-Mobile and it will be delivered to me on the morning of July 11 and I’ll have two weeks to cancel the contract if I decide I don’t want it. Strange that similar options don’t seem to be available in other countries.

I was going to upgrade, not for the 3G, but for the GPS.
Then the AT&T bomb dropped yesterday.
I will now stay with my [thinner] iPhone Classic.
I was planning to buy an unlocked 3G version. I was aware there would obviously be a price increase. Nonetheless, $500? $600!? AT&T can keep its prohibitive price scheme and unwieldy activation process to itself. I’ll gladly wait for the prices to drop.

I doubt SIM card swapping will work. Since a SIM can be locked to a certain phones IMEI number.
Evidence, I don’t know if you have AT&T or noticed this, but when I bought a new phone, and swapped SIM cards; I went online to pay my bill and noticed they had updated my current phone model listing in my control panel online.
John, I am in retail and something you are also forgetting they are probably doing this also to up-sell and sell more add-ons and accessories. Weak. I am done with Apple’s rules and games… waiting for Google’s phone.
One should be able to buy a phone from AT&T and then Cancel the Contract walking away at a price of $480.
I disagree with apple not letting you activate on line, I try to do all my shopping on line, last year I did all my Christmas shopping with out leaving my couch. It sucks but all be inline on July 11.
Well that sucks. I bought my first Iphone in December `07 at an AT&T store and the damn rep didn’t know anything about it, nor did the STORE MANAGER. This should make for some interesting customer service calls.

The iPhone is a great product, no doubt. The way it’s distributed and how third part dev is dealt with reminds me of the old apple in the eighties. The same arrogance and control freak behavior. Eventually the bill gates of cell phones will come along and eat their lunch if they keep it up.
I know it is not necessarily Apple’s fault but i.e. in Canada we get stripped naked to use an iPhone more than a year after it’s been introduced in the states for pocket money. Check out thee rates that Rogers just announced for iPhone data plans in Canada. Tip: don’t forget to factor in the ’system access fees’ and ‘value package’ (in the fine print) that you need to get such fantastic new technologies as call display and a voice box. Now the options are to move into a smaller house in Canada or a little further south and across the border to b able to afford the gimmick.
Am I that desperate? No thanks I’ll stick with my crappy to use but very functional htc windows mobile ’smart’ phone talking via skype for free most off the time but still plugging rogers with $70 a month for nothing.
Sorry for the rant but this is ridiculous (and probably quite funny for all Americans).

I agree, all that “hands wrenching” policies by AT&T are a “little annoying”, but, hey, doesn’t other companies do the same? And by the way, instead of unlocking my iPhone, I switched to AT&T from T-Mobile. And you know what? It’s MUCH better service for international calls and here in US! Try it! You will save money, get better service and will not have to break your future new iPhone!

I think it is funny seeing everyone complain about Apple’s policies. If I’m not mistaken, Apple is a corp trying to protect its properties and increase revenue. Companies have surely lost millions or more through unlocked phones… Apple has just taken a proactive approach to protect themselves. If it was your company, you’d be happy to sit back and let people steal revenue out from under you?
If you don’t like Apple or the iPhone, don’t buy it.

Actually it looks like Apple hasn’t lost money from the unlocking scene really, seeing as they’ve been making full profits on hardware up until now… if anything this has given them a good deal of revenue that they wouldn’t have otherwise gotten by being AT&T exclusive. From what I’ve observed in the unlocking community it looks like the people who aren’t using AT&T and felt no desire to switch (or couldn’t switch) are the ones who make up most of the unlocked population… I hardly see how having a wide consumer base of people who want your product even though they have to unlock it (and in most cases pay a premium) is really such a terrible thing.
As for the pricing… it’s a bit of a deal breaker for me. The in-store activation is also a massive hindrance for the simple fact I live on an island without any kind of AT&T store to buy from. There’s still a part of me that’s hoping there’s some chance happening that will allow me to snag one from the Apple site, as bleak as it’s looking. -_-

I was totally going to buy a new iPhone but the situation just gets worse and worse. I have to pay a fee to transfer from my old iPhone to new phone. THe new At&T plans cost $360 MORE to complete a two year contract. No pre-sales. Youhave to activate in store. At&T gets one of my gonads…

This is very uncool for people like myself who have disabilities and, therefore, more difficulties with transportation than your average bear. A trip to my AT&T store, since it’s off the route of public transportation, would cost about $35 (not including the time that the meter is running while I’m inside in line). Very, very uncool, Apple.
