Dash GPS Receives First Wi-Fi Update
by John Biggs on June 30, 2008

One of the most compelling features of the Dash - Wi-Fi updates - is finally here. Dash users simply connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi and the Dash GPS unit will download and install the update automatically. Try doing that with your TomTom.

After the update the devices will include a new feature called MyRoute, a system that maintains a list of your popular routes and adds your personal preferences to its routing suggestions.

Here’s a rundown of the latest goodies:

MyRoute™ – With the new MyRoute feature, as you travel from one point to another, Dash Express will automatically learn your preferred route in the background. The next time that you drive between the same origin and destination, the first route choice will be MyRoute, complete with traffic-based arrival time data. MyRoute can be compared to the computed Dash routes, including traffic detours, to decide which is optimal.

Search Along Route™ – Finding whatever you need on the road using Yahoo! Local search just got even easier. With the new Search Along Route feature, you can now search for anything you need along your selected route, shortening diversions on the way to your destination. Want to grab a latte on the way to a meeting? Simply do a Yahoo! Local search for “Starbucks” and select “along route” to be presented with the stores that are most conveniently located. Results are displayed with the distance from your current location, the distance off the route and the direction of the destination relative to the selected route.

We just used a Garmin to navigate SF and the Valley. It was pretty cool to not have to fiddle with maps but the ability of using live traffic info and to customize our routs would have helped a lot

pretty sweet idea. are people buying these though given most cars now have them built in?

of course people still buy them because GPS have become a consumer good and people can’t stand just having to option to go from one place to another…
they need a lot more to revive their consumer desires…

GPS and related services are really mushrooming these days to make travelling more easier than ever.
Kudos to all such products and services….

The TomTom actually offers a similar feature called IQ Routes.

Are you embarrassed by the misspelled “recieves” in the title? Spelling checkers are good.

I’ve been driving around LA with a friend who uses a Dash and I’ve found it to be much better than every other GPS I’ve used. (And I’ve been designing map & GPS products one and off for a half dozen years.)

There are still some bugs to work out but the quality and features more than makes up for it, and the software update ability removes much of the risk of buying a Version 1 hardware product.

I’m going to buy one this afternoon.

Logo and name totally rule. I hope the backend keeps up with the face… .

Why could you not do such updates w/ a TomTom?
Have you tried the Tyre plugin for TomTom home http://www.janboersma.nl/gett ? It works quite well. The magic of Open source saving the day again.

oh yeah.. that is fun ;) I can have a navigation system tell me the route to work which i travel every day. not sure i really need that

wait…how is this different from iq short cut routing from tomtom??? i don’t understand…in my opinion, tomtom got here first…
