Stuck With a Gen 1 iPhone? Flipswap It

Sending in your old phone or iPod for money isn’t anything new, but I recently found Flipswap and they’re a little bit different than other services out there. For one thing, everything is free and they even pay for your shipping costs. I’m not sure how their algorithm works, but they claim to give the highest trade-in value for your phone. Simply input your info, answer a few questions about the device and the phone’s IMEI and they’ll give you an estimate of your device and send the check right out. First gen iPhones are currently fetching around $190.

Just sell it on ebay and say it’s “unlocked” and you’ll fetch at least twice that.

You might get more money selling it to someone who wants the iPhone but refuses to leave T-Mobile/Suncom (which is in the Carolina’s, Georgia).

They are not offering much money either:

iPhone 16 GB: $212.66

iPhone 8 GB: $162.06

iPhone 4 GB: $131.70

You might be able to pull off similar prices for one in mint condition (or “running like new”–basically undamaged) by selling it to another GSM party online.

Just my 2 cents (pun intended).

Nice find. Time to sell old generation iPhone

Wow, that’s pretty cool.

I wonder how they can buy 1rst gen phones at $200 when 2nd gens are $299?

190$ for the iPhone. Hey Peter Ha, there’s this really cool website called eBay, and you can sell your iPhone for AT LEAST 300! ein?

Hey

this is kinda off topic but I usually open all my techcrunch links in a new tab in firefox by clicking my scroll wheel all of a sudden this has stopped woking on the techcrunch website has this happened to anyone else.

@ Josh, yes.

I noticed that too. Lucky this isn’t a porn site, or I’d feel rather frustrated about now.

Great, maybe I can trade in my piece of shit HTC Windows Mobile Smart Phone before I get my iPhone here in Canada.

Maybe Flipswap is jailbreaking them and sending them to Russia in bulk. The 2.0 iPhone won’t be available everywhere.

If you guys think this is a good deal, check THIS out! There’s a site called Ebay. I’m not sure how their algorithm works, but 1st gen 8GB iPhones are selling for $300+. I 2 for $375 each the day after the 3g announcement and it doesn’t look like prices have dropped much since then.

I’m looking to get a 2g iPhone when the 3g ones come out. How much do you think I’ll be able to find an 8gb or 16gb one for in a couple of months?

Envirofone is a bit more UK friendly, everything there is also completely free.

cool its like http://www.swaptree.com, but for phones. nice.

lol @ the low balling website.

I have a crack in my screen and could still sell my 8gb for more then that….

There’s a service called Guaranteed Buyback that allows you to do this for laptops and other CE devices. I did it for my iPod a while back and was impressed how easy it was and the ability to not have to worry when I’m ready to upgrade to a new model.

Check out this company: http://cexchange.com
they’re offering $255 for an 8gb 1st gen iPhone!

It looks like they’re beating FlipSwap’s “Highest Price” claim by quite a bit.

Poor people who are “stuck with a Gen 1 iPhone”… Too bad they can’t waste $200 and another $10/mo, as well as sign up for yet another 2 year contract. Such a shame……

iphone is good but I don’t use

VenJuvo also does the same thing: https://www.venjuvo.com

They seems to have the same prices and also pay for shipping - just another alternative in case you don’t like flipswap for some reason

You can sell these phones in middle east for twice this price.

I’d be nervous about typing in my IMEI on a strange site.

I don’t get how they can pay $190 and for a hundred more you can get a iphone 2.0? makes no sense.

That stinks for people who bought an iPhone before, the new iPhone is going to whoop the old one. Its good to know theirs a place you can get rid of your old one.

If you do sell your iphone, you should wait until the new firmware comes out. The existing firmware will keep your pictures and personal infomation in a state that it can be retrived after it is resold. The new firmware will do an actual wipe like any other Blackberry or Windows Mobile device.

Please don’t forget that phones can be recycled and the proceeds are used to buy phone cards for soldiers. Shipping is pre-paid too.

I believe the going rate for the Apple iPhone is £145 in the UK today, if that helps, with no chance of getting ripped off by some dodgy Ebay scammer.

great, it is a pretty idea to exchange iphones. it is another choice for us.

Wow, I should create a site like this so that I can get a first gen iPhone for $190! Or 16GB for $212 like another poster listed! If anyone wants to sell their iPhone for that amount, contact me instead! I’ll pay your postage too!

Do not use this service. I tried it with some old Ipaqs. They received the phones within a week of me sending them (they were sent right after the invoice I created), sat on them for 40 days before inspecting them (my account showed they were received for over a month already), and then claimed that the phones were sent after the 45 day invoice period so they didn’t have to pay as much. Then they also claimed that 2 perfectly mint condition phones were also in worse shape than I described, so I ended up not getting even close to the initial amount they told me.

Use one of the other services instead that does something similar to this - this is a ripoff.
