Snackr: A Tasty RSS Reader
by John Biggs on June 29, 2008

It’s slow this weekend so let’s offer a bit of service “journalism” by pointing you all to Snackr, an Adobe AIR-based RSS reader that pulls stories from your feed list or pre-made OPML file and displays them in random ticker along your desktop. It works in OS X and Windows.

I’m a NewsFire man myself, but I’ve been looking for a good, unobtrusive RSS ticker for a while now so I’m glad to find Snackr. Sadly, the icon - an RSS feed icon with a bite taken out of it - makes me think the application is broken whenever I look at my task bar, wasting valuable brain cycles until I realize the author, Narciso Jaramillo, is just being funny and ironic.

yeah maybe he should change the logo.

I don’t really care, just wanted to get the first comment - woo hoo

hasn’t this been available for over a month now? I like the app, but in Vista it has strange overlapping bugs right now that make it a bit of a pain to use. I do like the idea of an unobtrusive RSS ticker though.

whats with all these “r” in domain name

is the “r” the new e and i of domain branding

Thanks for this, I’m going to have to give it a shot!

@3″whats with all these “r” in domain name

I hope so, because I have a ton of great domains like snackr…

@siliconvalleydropout

It was… but it got old before it even started. Its pretty stupid if you ask me.

@xxdesmus–is the bug you’re talking about the fact that other windows overlap it when you maximize them? Unfortunately that’s a limitation of AIR right now–hopefully there’ll be a way to fix this in a future version. There’s also a problem with collapsing right now, but I’m probably just going to take that out on Windows and make it minimize to the systray. Let me know if you’re seeing something else.

@MobileRoar–please see the second-to-last FAQ on this page: http://snackr.net/faq.html :)

There is ReadAir which is eerily similar.. Am i missing something?

OK, please ignore my previous message. I’m an idiot! Clearly ReadAir isnt the same! I am a Windows user, and the screenshot of the Flexbuilder confused me!!

i dont know why. but im not impressed by any of the readers.. i still prefer going to the site and reading the articles that interest me !

Now that I hve started blogging im looking out for this feature as i understand that this is very important indeed

This sort of defeats the spirit of RSS. You take a nice, clean, lightweight spec, and wrap a massive platform like Air around it, and voila, a massive client that slows your computer down 5%, and after 10 of these, you wonder “how did my computer get so slow?” I have to admit, I love the ticker, but it seems to me this can be done so much better with a special purpose light client.

Its annoying to see such a wide strip moving across your laptop screen.. is there a way to reduce the strip size?

Whoever took a bite out of their that logo should see an orthodontist.

@ postr : my favorite so far has to be spickr. whoever tried to rationalize that one should be flown to singapore and caned 10 times.

RSS tickers for OS X have been around for ages, and a number of these are much more feature rich (and OS X savvy) than Snackr, though perhaps not as pretty…

FeedTicker, NewsTicker, Tickershock, Stickler!

(search for them on MacUpdate)

I heard Snackr on Twitter and started using it about a month ago. I was really psyched about it because I’ve always envisioned this is how feed were meant to display. Funny thing is, after about a week I forgot all about it. I’d use it again for a day, forget again. I guess old habits do die hard (or with a vengance).

It is interesting but not for me, however I just tried out feedly and I must say it is quite nice.

actually tried to use newsfire - no go on a pc. whats the reason for that? is it like a beholden grudge thing against pc’s - “we’re not going to go there” or is just a tech and resource issue “we just cant bother now creating this app for pcs”?

anyway, if anyone has tidbits on great rss readers, lemme know (something better than google reader, rss outlook and newsgator)

i checked it out….
Looks OK….!

@19

I echo your sentiment. It does look OK. Meh.

Flickr, Twitter, Twattr, and a dozen more….
the name coulda been better

nice new favicon TC!!

let’s face it, Adobe AIR is a great platform for a lot of potential apps, but it couldn’t be worse for a continuously animating app like a ticker. Check out the CPU usage for this thing and its clear it has no place being on your desktop all the time (which is what most people expect from a ticker)

Its a cool demo, but nothing more. Tickers should be native.

adobe air looks to take clutter off of the internet but accomplish this by cluttering desktop smh

Why is middle-clicking on links disabled on TechCrunch? I’m on Linux, Firefox 3… on all other sites when I middle click on a link it opens in a new window, and the same was true for TechCrunch until… well sometime in the last few days I think.

TECHCRUNCHR.COM is already taken

lol who brought this michael arrington?

he, how about a TC50 update, how many submissions came in?

“What the world needs now is another RSS reader. Like I need a hole in my head.”

I’m ecstatic to see Adobe AIR applications coming out. AIR will be something we’ll run into daily. When the rest of the world catches up to the forefront.

Hmmm… Have seen this thing work on Vista. Don’t like it being in my face all the time and being stuck on my Mac. And what’s so AIR about it? Can I access it whenever I want to and on every machine I pick? I better like the idea of iGoogle. (except that it’s Google and it’s sooooooo slooooow) For me it’s Symbaloo. Never seen anything so simple, great graphics, web 2.0 based and no waiting time at all. TechCrunch you better check than one out!

Its nice, but has a 25% constant CPU usage on Macs. A little high for a simple RSS reader…

delete the entire feed collection they have and add your FF RSS feed. Wow is all i can say.

If you think it’s broken… you shouldn’t buy an apple ;o)

not useful
useless
are you getting money write these sort of things

Hmm, found it last week. Can’t believe I’m on top of TechCrunch on this one.

It won’t replace my Google Reader any time soon, but for a peripheral ticker - it’s pretty cool. I like how you can “throw” it onto the edges of the screen to make it stick to that side.

useless? I agree you ,ajay

A bit OT, but I’m looking for a good RSS feed aggregator for my Blackberry. Suggestions?

Hi everyone,

It’s not intrusion but an humble request to the community here.

I have recently started an articles website and would request you (I will appreciate if you can) to please spare some time and post articles at my site.

Thanks

The RSS Ticker at http://www.easybyte.com has got many more features and is a very lightweight application as it is just for windows, not dotNet or Java, just native.

Runs fast!

sounds pretty interesting.. I’ll certainly have a look at it since I’m a fan of Flex Applications, and this is a great application for Air.

Its bulky and big, slows down my computer, and that logo looks terrible. Need i say anymore? Ill read my rss the regular way. thanks.

I love my rss feed so ill give it a chance if its sweet ill keep it, if not then its back to the old fashion way.

I wrote a much more lightweight web-version of a RSS subscription app on http://www.feedpeek.net — did I forget to mention it’s completely free?
