The Internet began as a government project which was subsequently privatized. In some significant ways the network was BETTER when it was PUBLIC PROPERTY run by our government that created it. Also note that the problems with net neutrality were predicted 20 years ago as the inevitable consequence of a private internet.

Luckily when this internet was sold to the highest bidder it was replaced with a vastly improved non-commercial academic research network known as Internet2.

The USA doesn't own the Internet and, as a US citizen, I'd like to keep it that way. Look at how our infrastructure is crumbling. Look at how the FCC is managing the airways.

Just say "No" to nationalization of anything.

Maybe Internationalizing the Internet. I'm not very confident in idea of governmental involvance. But International council of non-governmental organizations consisting of the leading scholars in IT industries of the every and each country (similar to the organization of U.N.).

Remember... Internet is not U.S. thing anymore. Just ask yourself how many servers exist outside of U.S.?

Btw, I think neither of these would pass in congress. Niether nationalizing, niether internationalizing.

Generally, when governments run the Internet, like they do in Russia, it's a bad thing for freedom and business.

Why be absolutist about it, however? Perhaps the government could run some part of the Internet, or help create more access to the Internet for schools, or provide more wireless or something.

Re: "in the context of a bigger discussion about the threat to Net neutrality posed by the cable and phone companies, who are making moves to control the amount and types of bits that can go through their pipes."

Let's recast that less ideologically, shall we? "a discussion about the threat to access to the Internet by everybody because gamers and piraters are torrenting patches and movies, so that everybody else is slowed down". Perhaps it's a good thing if they are restrained, if they don't pay more to play more.

My dear colleagues--

Please review the history of the internet

http://www.isoc.org/internet/history/brief.shtml

Once upon a time, actually until 1995, the "internet" as we know it in the U.S. WAS controlled by the Feds. (see the lovely graphic at the bottom of this page.) The birth of the entire internet infrastructure as we know it today was the creation of federal agencies!

There are MANY who feel the current ISOC control is fraught with insanity and proprietary overtones as opposed to the use of true scholarly research. PLEASE do some reasearch!

@77 "The best healthcare systems in the world are all nationalised."

You have GOT to be joking. If not, this one of the more ignorant things I've read in a long time.

I wouldn't call a nationalized healthcare system like they have in the UK, where close to 900,000 people are waiting to be admitted to hospital, and 50,000 operations a year are canceled due to shortages all that successful. Or waiting 25 weeks for heart surgery, like in Sweden.

Nationalizing the Internet? What a f*cking dumb idea. This would be the first step towards Socialism. no!

The Internet is free. And the net became what it became because it was that free. Internet is anarchy and this it good. Nationalizing would mean the state would have a monopoly on the infrasructure. Be sure that the government would use this monopoly for censorship!
