Why be absolutist about it, however? Perhaps the government could run some part of the Internet, or help create more access to the Internet for schools, or provide more wireless or something.

Let’s recast that less ideologically, shall we? “a discussion about the threat to access to the Internet by everybody because gamers and piraters are torrenting patches and movies, so that everybody else is slowed down”. Perhaps it’s a good thing if they are restrained, if they don’t pay more to play more.

Once upon a time, actually until 1995, the “internet” as we know it in the U.S. WAS controlled by the Feds. (see the lovely graphic at the bottom of this page.) The birth of the entire internet infrastructure as we know it today was the creation of federal agencies!

There are MANY who feel the current ISOC control is fraught with insanity and proprietary overtones as opposed to the use of true scholarly research. PLEASE do some reasearch!

You have GOT to be joking. If not, this one of the more ignorant things I’ve read in a long time.

I wouldn’t call a nationalized healthcare system like they have in the UK, where close to 900,000 people are waiting to be admitted to hospital, and 50,000 operations a year are canceled due to shortages all that successful. Or waiting 25 weeks for heart surgery, like in Sweden.

The Internet is free. And the net became what it became because it was that free. Internet is anarchy and this it good. Nationalizing would mean the state would have a monopoly on the infrasructure. Be sure that the government would use this monopoly for censorship!
