I found this page because I was looking for a way to buy my next domain without going through this BS. Does anyone have a recipe to avoid this?

They did this exact thing to me 6 days ago. Went to buy a domain name at Godaddy for $9, had some weird issues trying to complete my order. Sure enough, I can't buy it. Then I go to Network Solutions and it's available but for $50. WTF? Is this not totally illegal? What happened to consumer protection?

since when did network solutions start having a problem with this ? 3 yrs! Such atrocious lies. During this time I fell victim to their stupid ways of latching onto customers. The various domains I searched for were locked by them and ultimately I ended up buying from them. I wasnt aware that they are supposed to release those domains in abt 5 days or so. This is a highly unethical practice!!

Wow. What absolute and total hypocrisy.

Fuck Network Solutions. Their "protection measure" is actually worse than the practices they seem to be railing against here.

Hey, NetSol: just because a bunch of jerks taste domain names does not make it okay for your to steal (that's right, STEAL) your customers domain names. Two jerk moves does not equal one good move.

Use Moniker.com or 77gb.net . All the others I don't trust.

Spread the word everybody.

I had such experience too: check a domain name, then domain name will become unavailable in one or a few days. I had thought that someone had done sniffing network solutions and registered.

If Network Solutions really did so, it deserved a charge of fraud, and class action.

Is there any proof GoDaddy does this?

So far none, though that's never stopped some people from believing Go Daddy, Network Solutions, etc. are engaged in this. It's conveniently easier to believe in such, even if it's not necessarily true.

And Michael, they already answered your question: they'll stop it if ICANN finally "stops" this. Their making their $0.20 fee nonrefundable may not completely stop domain tasting, kiting, whatever, but they're using that measure as successfully demonstrated by the .Org Registry.

Good work Michael in exposing what's really going on here. These dodgy practices need to stop in order for the domain name industry to grow and mature.

As a former Network Solutions employee, I know what they do and it's basically prey on people that don't know anything about the internet. Sure, it's easy to find decent registrars as tech heads but what about all the baby boomers out there that didn't grow up using the Internet?

Also, when a company like NetSol does this, they aren't getting locked into purchasing it because they have a short window of time to "try it" before they "buy it." This technique is called domain "kiting" and most kiters will put up a page of advertisements and let organic traffic flow through that page for the duration of the domain "trial" period. Then they essentially "return" the domain and get their money back.

IF the domain gets enough organic traffic to be worth purchasing, sometimes a kiter will buy it, but not many domains are worth it.

Karim and others commenting here ,

Tasters and Front Runners deal in registering and deleting millions of domains within the 5 day grace period while they test them to see if they would be profitable to keep. Network Solutions does not engage in this practice.
We have an opt-in reservation for our customers in order to help protect their interests against Tasters and Front Runners. Applying a non-refundable $.20 fee in the 5 day AGP will make the Tasters' monetizing efforts during the 5 day window unprofitable.

We hope you will write ICANN today and urge them to pass this provision, too.

Thanks,

Shashi

:) At last they give up.

Thanks to blogs like yours, I found out what they have done, I now understand better why a domain I search was available one day is not available the next day.

To the guys who say "They all do it" thats not true, there are good moral companies like:

- www.77gb.net (.com is for those who want to be resellers)

they do not do it. At least I have not heard anybody saying negative about them, or experience negative about them.

Again thanks,

No. We don't all "do it".

Name.com is, and has been, opposed to the practice of "front-running", whether done by a registrar (in this case Network Solutions) or by unscrupulous parties who are sniffing the traffic passing through a registrars website. We have never, nor do we plan to, "defensively" register domain names our customers search for.

This practice is separate, but in some ways, related to domain tasting. ICANN is considering doing away with the 5 day add/delete grace period which is very likely to dramatically curtail tasting and and eliminate kiting.

Michael, I think you're right but maybe the explanation isn't. The reason NetSol is saying they won't "reserve" domains any more if this passes is because it will cost themselves $.20 a domain, and it wouldn't be a profitable practice anymore.

This $.20 fee won't stop front running, it will only stop kiting and to some degree domain tasting.

"We have been advocating that ICANN to implement a nonrefundable fee for more than 3 years because we could see domain tasting, kiting and front running were growing issues." Shashi, this sounds a bit like a murderer saying that he's been concerned about the rising rate of crime for years. Would front-running have been as much of a "growing issue" if your company, Network Solutions, had not implemented it?

Network Solutions people are crooks. A company I worked for attempted to buy a domain (that they owned) - and were holding out on us for six figures. Said they wanted to use it for "marketing." I am not against domain name reselling by any means. I am against registrars holding domains hostage en masse. Network solutions should lose their license to re-sell domains.
