Tracking Former Yahoo Execs - Where Are They Now?
by Michael Arrington on June 19, 2008

Out of pure curiosity we started tracking Yahoo execs who’ve left the company since January 2007. It’s hard to believe, but at least fifty of them have bailed out in the last year and a half.

Some went to work for Google. Others went to startups. Many just left without saying what’s next.

We aren’t able to track the thousands of non-execs who’ve quit or were laid off, there are just too many of them. Many of these ex Yahoo’ers have congregated on this Yahoo Alumni Page on Facebook, with over 1,500 members. This picture above was taken from the group photos in that group.

We’re keeping an active spreadsheet of as many as we can track down, and have copied it below. If you know of ones we missed, please let us know in the comments.

And it appears that the exodus is just really getting started. We’ll keep this up to date in the future as well.

Seems like a lot…
..but what is the average # for a mega-sized corporation like Yahoo?

Think about it, maybe if google was not around maybe then yahoo would be still the number 1 search engine.

But saying that maybe Yahoo needs to pay more $?

What do you think?

LOL:

Little did they dream that one day thousands of people all around the world would be tracking their career moves.

Great research.

@2, I agree just pay them more.

While you’re at it, could you set up a prediction market for future departures? I bet the wisdom of the crowd could predict when Josh Schachter quits within +/- one week.

@2,5 It isn’t all about the pay. A big portion of these execs are from buying startups. Entrepreneurs aren’t built for big companies.

Without a comparison with a company like yahoo, this data is really meaningless. Try other big companies from the web 1.0 day, you might see the same trend; execs leaving their comfy meaningless jobs for pre-ipo companies and startups.

Ever since Jerry said no thanks, TC has been a yahoo bashing site. Did Jerry put a dent in somebody’s investments? Or is somebody’s ego hurt because they were so very wrong?

money is important, but when u are at such high profile position, u are probably concern more about bringing the company to the next stage or create the next killer app.
seems like these execs do not think Y! can do that or Y! is not sustainable in the long run

Honestly i think this is all good for yahoo.

Yahoo needs a new start, less execs, more geeks.

Clean house.

Microsoft has really shown that Yahoo is a big time whore. They have fucked yahoo inside out and left to beg in the market.

Great list! but is it useful?

Let’s not forget that THESE ARE THE EXECUTIVES THAT GOT YAHOO INTO THIS MESS!

Yahoo had it all, and squandered it. With such a poor performance, at least 40% of the execs should have been canned anyway. Let’s just hope the right group left!

Can you run the same list for Google?

Hmm they lost a lot of people, but i do trust that Yahoo will survive !

two Jason Zajac? are them the same guy?

Interesting - none to Facebook. What does that say about Google versus Yahoo :)

Here are some of the execs from Yahoo! Europe that left since 2004:

Pierre Chappaz
Was: President
Now: Chairman of Wikio.com

Dominique Vidal
Was: RVP Europe
Now: Partner Index Ventures

Jean-Marc Potdevin
Was: VP Technology
Now: Indenpendent investor

Jean-Fabrice Mathieu
Was: VP Marketplace
Now: CEO of seloger.com

Pierre Gaudet
Was: VP Marketplace Asia
Now: CEO Metaboli

Yann Motte
Was: VP Product Management
Now: Founder Webjam

Gard Jenssen
Was: VP Product Development
Now: Founder Ignitas.com

Yahoo executives are feel free to stay or leave Yahoo !

Yahoo as corporate gonna be allrights .

A lot of savvy and techie persons ready to take any job postitions in yahoo.

Nice tracking…I guess many more would appear on that list very soon.

@9, pretty agree.

Likely these exec were mostly recruited by former CEOs before Mr Yang. It is good for Yahoo to get some new blood, with diversified backgrounds. It is also good for these execs.

I would be interested in seeing the numbers for google and MS.

Also these are just management people so I’d like to see the numbers for experienced developers leaving for start ups.

I don’t think Qi Lu has left Yahoo, but Tim Cadogan, SVP search, did.

http://www.tech-exposed.com

I dont doubt that people are leaving but we dont know what the rate of people leaving was before 07 or for large corporations.

Michael Arrington, can u pls publish similar data for Gooogle. That will also exciting .

Mike,

you’re starting to look like a people magazine trying to tear Yahoo down as much as possible.

Did you own Yahoo stock or what?

Alexa

There’s a new book out about Jerry Yang. Check it out.

hmmm! Did consultants Bob and Bob visited Yahoo! for a little house cleaning?
Where Sameer and Michael go?

What’s Peter Gibbons new title?

Google > Yahoo > MSN Search

We get it already. Yahoo! screwed up. This is now pure Schadenfreude on your behalf, Michael.

it’s wed…

another yahoo bashing from mike!!! now i can go back to sleep!

but to be fair. did these guys/gals leave for what would be considered to be an upward or lateral move? seriously doubt that any did a lower move.

and as been pointed out, you haven’t done the same for google, or anyone else. people leave (good and bad). people get vested, get bored, get more $$$, realize the company is going to go through tough times, etc… so who knows why these given guys left…

all we know for sure. the sum will rise in the east, and mike will bash yahoo!!!!!

gotta love ya!

peace

Mikey’s just upset that his prediction of microsoft’s takeover of yahoo with 95% confidence fell flat on it’s a$%

yeah and i also remember he paraded some so-called analyst who said the deal was as good as done.

you’re dealing with human nature here, not a bunch of spreadsheets.

get you head out of excel and wake up!

Thanks for giving us information on the status of former Yahoo executives……..it looks like everyone is jumping ship before it sinks !

What? Jumped ship and went to Google? Lovely. Go make some mad Google money!

JT
http://www.FireMe.to/udi

Another.

Isabell Wagner
Was: MD Sales Director for Central Europe
Now: MD bigmouthmedia Germany

Wow. [Silence]. [Gulping sound]. How does Yang have a job still again?

Does anyone else reference in their mind the Dana Carvey airplane skit? LOL

“Goodbye now…goodbye…goodbye…”

At least the positive thing about this list is that none of them took demoted positions. I’m seeing VPs taking CEO positions at other companies and higher board members moving over to venture capital firms. Yahoo! executive positions are clearly highly credible. I don’t see anyone moving to burger flipper.

Amit

Others have said it but how about a comparison chart as well? How many left Google and Microsoft?

This data seems useless without a comparison.

that the Yahoo! Alumni Group created this on Facebook, rather than a Yahoo! Group or other property, says more than a little, too, no?

this is how companies get revitalized, it is great, we need a few more names

yahoo is going to be fine, don’t worry

Deep Varma, Director of Solutions Engineering Team left Yahoo! on May 30th, 2008. New Venture TBD.

Damn thats a lot of smart people looking for jobs. I wish one or two could fall my way, my start up could use a couple.

While some of the folks in the list are real loses - most are not. If you notice most of the gang is 0- the “content” side of things who came in during Terry Semel’s time.

I sincerly hope a few more old timers leave (and there are a lot of them still hanging in there for no reason). Hopefully that will inject some fresh folks into the organization which is definitely needed at this time.

Wow… that’s a tremendous amount of turnover, even though Yahoo has been around for awhile. What is it going to take to turn Yahoo around and become an extremely profitable and dominant online entity. Basically, how do you take out Google. Check it http://www.readtheanswer.com/index.php?rta=blog

Tim Cadogan left to become CEO of OpenX
http://www.techcrunch.com/2008.....nx-as-ceo/

Gurbaksh Chahal, (www.chahal.com) CEO from the BlueLithium deal also left quickly

Look at all of those VPs. Bloated management, bloated website.

It shows.

A few deal guys have left:

Dennis Morgan
Then: VP, Corp Finance at Yahoo!
Now: CFO at Panther Express; CFO at AlleyCorp.com

Mike Marquez (although he may have left in late ‘06?)
Then: Director, Corp Dev at Yahoo!
Now: SVP, Strategy & Corp Dev at CBS Interactive

Jeff Birkeland, Senior Director, Lifestyle Products at Yahoo! –> VP, Product Management at Car Advisory Network

Greg DeForest, Senior Director, Yahoo! Sports –> Founder, Kontend

Alex Deve, Director International Product Strategy at Yahoo! –> VP & GM Hosted Products (Typepad & Vox) at Six Apart

Justin Madison, VP / Gm Streaming Center

Left Yahoo! March ‘08

Currently
VP Engineering @ Operations
Citrix Online

Murray Gaylord, VP, Brand Marketing
Now: VP Marketing and Customer Insights, NY Times
