To me, the issue getting control of one's own comments so much as the artificial distinction between comments and posts. There's no essential difference between a post referencing somebody else's post and a comment to somebody else's post, except the server location and the way it's displayed. What we need is an open content creation system that doesn't make artificial distinctions between content, but rather gives the viewers as much control over how they view it as the originator.

Interesting stuff!

Over on phreadz, I'm about to add the ability for a user to apply Creative Commons licensing to their posts.

Also, users (testers) now have the ability to start a conversation, or reply to a post with a video, audio, photo or slideshow from Phreadz, desktop, mobile, YouTube, Seesmic, Blip.tv, Qik or SlideShare. Also any video (flv) url or audio mp3 url (a podcast) and more to come.

The conversational 'mashup' of multimedia - and actual threaded structure of the conversation / information / entertainment is proving to be very interesting.

I'll be looking at why FriendFeed doesn't seem to want to play videos etc. from Phreadz, using the RSS feeds (with enclosures and media elements) and see if I can get that implemented by them.

As Jeff said, the key point are indeed permissions and copyrights for sharing this 'remote' content. Some systems provide a 'do not embed' flag, some do not. Some have an embed link on every post, making it easy to share.

It's about time these conversations (about conversational content) happen. Good stuff! As it's very easy to do.

It will certainly become an issue when people earn money from doing it.

The key points here are permissions and copyright, and then the standards.

I think that the major blog software providers need to provide a way for commenters to signal their ownership and use permission for comments. For eg. I can mark this comment as being CC, or that I don't want it aggregated. I think its pretty important that the aggregators support this, just as feed readers honor a publishers intent when they put excerpts into feeds rather than full posts.

The second part was about standards, so its good to hear that FF will soon allow users to add generic feeds for media - such as photo streams. This allows the little guys who don't get direct support to publish to a standard and have their users able to add their feeds into FF.

Joe

I think they mean that while Disqus centralizes input (comments) from all over the web, they also have an API allowing for outputs, which allows for the same content to be distributed elsewhere.

Disqus is decentralized? Disqus is a single repository for commenting. That is, by definition, centralized.

Comments are the sole ownership of the blog author, for its just another facet of social mediated content. The better the comments, the more value the comments bring to the users of the blogs. Cool panel to go over, interesting topic -- How long has this panel been in action?
