Just had this toolbar display an ad based on the last search i did. Kinda freaky when it pops up, especially if the last search was for something obscure. My friend and i were doing some research on a product, then we went to techcrunch to find out if it had a competitor and BAM, the ad for that company displayed at the top of techcrunch. We we're a little concerned. But now i know that it's the toolbar i'm less freaked out. Still it doesn't feel a bit invasive.

I think Google is tops period. Their quality is far above the others in all they do. If they want to target me with ads, I will say , "be my guest." And as far as privacy goes , I have a lot more privacy with Google than I do with Microsoft. Bill Gates fears Google and will do anything to instill that fear into those who support Google. I just ignore such talk

google and privacy... microsoft and privacy...

interesting issues to grapple with, but most probably don't really care, or don't have an issue with it. i mean think about it. on facebook/myspace/etc.. you've got people sharing things on their pics/msgs that probably go a helluva lot further in exposing "private" data about you than anything that can be gleaned from your web habits...

the people who will scream about a google toolbar are the guys who want to produce/distribute a competing service!!

however, it would be good if any device/service that "tracked" you was installed in the "off" position as a default, so that the user would have to turn it on in order for data to be sent back to the server. furthermore, it would be nice if the device would automatically reset itself to off periodically... this would force the user to have to consciously decide to continuously turn the app on.

i seriously doubt that this approach would be implemented as this would greatly reduce the amount of people who would use the system. on the flip side, the data you get would probably be significantly more valuable, as the people using the system would be making the choice to use the app! as opposed to it being in effect without the users specific consent...

Google is more scary than Microsoft. why not respect people's privacy and allow opt out. ask.com has "eraser" option that deletes search queries. why can't google implement it.

Funny that nobody is mentioning Gmail. I use email even more than I surf, and Google probably already know more about us this way already.

So unless you start encrypting your emails with a tool like www.cGeep.com don't expect Google to know nothing about you.

it is amazing how the self-reference here is sick, so since yesterday google's innocence is officially over? Google was an innocent company all this time and nobody told me. Thanks TC.
