They need to get with the times. I can't think of anyone who would call linking by titles to be plagiarism, and if I knew someone like that, I would think they were being stupid and unrealistic.

Besides - where is our right to decide what AP can and can't publish? See, they constantly fight for their freedom of speech, then hypocritically try to take it from others. Screw that.

What's unreasonable about defining the boundaries of fair use? You write:

'They will “attempt to define clear standards as to how much of its articles and broadcasts bloggers and Web sites can excerpt without infringing on The A.P.’s copyright.”'

Isn't the problem that there is little case law to determine these standards in the online sphere? The law needs to be tested, and AP is doing it the right way by asserting copyright over its own intellectual property.

AP just sent a cease and desist to the TN station saying the station violated copyright by posting AP's YouTube video on their website! Here is WTNQ's Frank Strovel telling me about it via Skype this morning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9YLkcJsoGk

AP's Vice President of Affiliate Relations in Chicago and some AP attorney sent the C&D, but when told about the AP YouTube channel, they had no idea it existed! They are in the process of "investigating" it... YES, investigating their own YouTube channel that enables embed codes for a reason!

There are two corporate cultures at AP: one that has embraced the new distribution and revenue model and one that is over paid and running AP into the ground.

They should be boycotted. What an outrage they are behaving like this when they GET their content from other news sources.

"As part of their cooperative agreement with The Associated Press, most member news organizations grant automatic permission for the AP to distribute their local news reports". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Associated_Press
