Wow, really spirited discussions, guys. We need all the RIA's due to the amount of web-based content around us. The Wii's system menu is HTML, for example. And I think Gears has great potential.

I think that they should make a OS thats UI is near COMPLETELY built out of Flash, Flex, Silverlight, Gears, etc...

@MagixMan,

"2) Unlike Silverlight/Flash you include any other plugin content in an AJax/Gears applications. Imagine a Silverlight “word processor” trying to embed some Flash. To me this is one of the most important and often overlooked advantages of HTML/AJAX"

You obviously have no clue what ur talking about as Silverlight has an HTML bridge API which allows for EXACTLY what you are saying. Not only can you mesh AJAX/Flash with Silverlight, you also can communicate with them.

Seriously RIA has a long way to go. Broadband does not exist everywhere and not everyone likes RIA. RIA would of course continue to have limited use not an extensive one.
And seriously Google can never be like Microsoft, it always would be just a wanna-be. Honestly, I hate both, but sometimes Google just tries too much innovation and use of automation. Microsoft is a heavy monster and bringing it down wont be easy for Google. In, the RIA arena, Flex and Silverlight would seldom rule.
By the way nice article!

Interesting article, however, I think comparing the futuristic abilities of web applications built on technology like Gears to products such as all of adobe's offereing is a very bad starting point. Any of the Adobe products in there current form and feature list could never be implemented is a web type technology. This premis alone is more then questionsable. It leads one to consider the anaylsis of the rest of your article.
Sill you do have some very good points. However, I tend to believe this open source momentum from Google is not about tackling real applications like Premiere, PhotoShop, Illistrator, but a push twards supporting the more day to day web applications that are taking over our lives. For example, RIA done in Flex/Silverlight do not lend themselves very well to integrating into the Google Advertising engine.

More interesting along these lines is Apple's push for no flash. Google uses flash when its the right thing to use. (Analytics, new Google Maps). Apples one-eye approch leads us to a more interesting conclusion.

Apple Quicktime X, a new Flash/Silverlight competitor

Read my analysis on this here.

Interesting article, however, I think comparing the futuristic abilities of web applications built on technology like Gears to products such as all of adobe’s offereing is a very bad starting point.

More interesting along these lines is Apple’s push for no flash. Google uses flash when its the right thing to use. (Analytics, new Google Maps). Apples one-eye approch leads us to a more interesting conclusion.
