Microsoft Live Expo, their experiment with classified listings that launched in early 2006, will be shut down on July 31, says a notice posted on the site. New listings have already been suspended.
This comes as Craigslist solidifies its position as the top free listings service. Other services like Kijiji (owned by eBay) and Oodle (which recently partnered with Walmart) continue to grow. Recently Kijiji has made waves about their impressive growth rate. And other classified listing startups continue to get funded.
There’s just no room for Microsoft in the classified listings space, it seems. It joins the deadpool.

Upstarts like http://www.wikimetro.org and others will eventually start finding holes in craigslist–Microsoft live just tried to knock everyone down with brute force, and that doesnt work in advertising.
Craigslist has the monopoly, they have an 8 year head start on everyone else. I think the site to watch is olx who might eventually take them on but who knows they might shut down shop after a few years too.
I don’t fully understand how those classifieds services earn money. For instance we have Gumtree in Poland (owned by Kijiji) and I cannot see anything besides sponsored links as rev stream for them. I understand that those are usually high traffic websites, and ads are probably highly relevant, but they are also facing strong attention competition from actual classifieds. So I don’t really see how they can be earning huge money this way…
I’m guessing this was someone’s 100% project?
While browsing through craigslist I get a feeling that it is made up of real people. Real people post ads overthere. But when I look at Windows Live Expo or any other classifieds site…I get a feeling that it’s fake!

This seems like more of a reaction to the closing of Google Base then admitting defeat to Craig’s List. Google is shutting their service down, so MSFT has no need to have an “answer” for that feature.

As I understand it, Gumtree/Kijiji’s biggest revenue source is from companies paying to list jobs, and later they might do the same with agencies listing properties. Even that is very low revenue per user.
A very simple database site, the marginal cost for each paying client is close to 0. Combined with the typical ‘network effect’ (the more users the system has, the more effective it becomes), and eBay’s existing platform it provides a small revenue stream.
What surprises me is that eBay has not rolled its superior Kijiji platform across Gumtree. Kijiji uses eBay’s rating mechanism, and has a much better IA and design.
It could be that Live Expo was successful, but not as successful as MS wanted it to be. And thus, because it didn’t grow fast enough they didn’t see it overtaking the big players in the area and shut it down because they didn’t see reason enough to maintain it.

I think with classifieds you need to concentrate on it, it cannot work as some other business which I think is what Microsoft was doing.
I’m sure this is a minority opinion, but I think CL blows… Never even knew MS had a listing site lol.
Maybe it’s me, but it seems more and more like Microsoft is bombing piece after piece of Live.com. It’s just not panning out for them, probably not for lack of trying, but maybe because of overall project management, severe tema shifting, not enough product maintenance and improvement, and a general ignoring of the community at large (you may remeber this last point helped shape Vista). I’d like for Live.com to succeed, but truth be told, Microsoft has to start getting their **** together pretty soon with the online stuff, cause otherwise, even if they did ever aquire Yahoo, it wouldn’t be worth a damn to Live.com.

So called “free” classified sites are ok - but only to a point — they are a haven for scam and bogus ads. Specialized “pay to post” vertical sites such as those for rental housing are better. For example:
