Google And Salesforce Cooking Up Something New Together
by Michael Arrington on June 9, 2008

Google and Salesforce can’t seem to get enough of each other: over a series of announcements the companies have aligned their product strategies more and more closely over time. Now the companies are planning something new together, to be announced by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and Google VP Engineering Vic Gundotra at Salesforce’s upcoming Tour de Force developer event on June 23 in Santa Clara.

A year ago Salesforce integrated adwords tracking into their platform. Then two months ago we heard rumors that the companies were planning on deeper product integration – it turned out to be the complete integration of Google Apps (Docs, Calendar, Gmail, and Gtalk) and Salesforce’s online enterprise apps.

With the most recent announcement Google in effect became Salesforce’s productivity suite. Google documents, spreadsheets, and presentation can be created from within Salesforce’s CRM application. GTalk works as the de facto instant messenger within Salesforce. With one click, sales people who use Gmail can send any email correspondence with potential or existing customers to Salesforce, where it becomes recorded as part of the sales cycle. Sales events and marketing campaigns can be overlayed onto a Google Calendar, as well as colleague’s schedules for figuring out convenient meeting times.

So what will the two companies announce later this month? Gundotra, who keynoted the recent Google I/O conference, is responsible for developer evangelism and open source programs at Google. That includes things like Android, Gears and Open Social. Connecting the dots isn’t too hard.

  • Mike,

This article has no meat! It’s all bones…. there’s no news in there.

You say: “Connecting the dots isn’t too hard.”

Well, maybe you can enlighten us plebes :) I have no idea what they’re launching.

  • i know what it is.

salesforce.com will hook in to opensocial, and you can share guacamole recipes with the sales guys down the hall.

  • Probably salesforce integration on android with opensocial. Doesn’t sound to much like a killer app except for really small businesses.

  • ha, maybe you’ll be able to share those guacamole recipes with your prospects too

  • Gundotra … is responsible for developer evangelism and open source programs at Google. That includes things like Android, Gears and Open Social. Connecting the dots isn’t too hard.

Are you suggesting Salesforce may open source their platform?
Create a mobile app for it?
Give their client offline capabilities? (think it has some of that already)
And integrate “Social Networking” into the sales process?

you’ve done a good job getting us to think and post; would you now please posit the dots you’ve connected?

  • salesforce on android. salesforce with gears (see recent myspace announcements), OS widgets on salesforce. etc.

  • Salesforce Android cloud applications using GPS.

  • comeon its just a crap noone cares wat saleforce is doin as long as they suck there shoopers

  • While this move makes clear strategic sense for both, what’s fascinating to watch (and admire) is the speed and execution with which Google is working with Salesforce. The salesmanship power being brought to bear here is also worth noting–the force (of sales) is strong in Benioff and Gundotra.

I’ve pondered before whether GOOG would retain the speed and flexibility as they got big. Their execution here is a good sign for them.

  • “Google” as the name says it googles a lot to form a great partnership. In fact I was expecting something bigger from this partnership, but it looks like the same old Salesforce for Google AdWords product I don’t see any thing new coming out. I look forward in future really something good comes out of this partnership, Best wishes…

  • This is a good reason to attend the Tour de Force. But Mike I agree it can be hard to connect the dots with Google and SFDC … they are clearly converging as Google pushes into enterprise apps, and as SFDC expands its Force.com platform beyond SFA/CRM … but their classic cores (consumer/G – SFA/CRM for SFDC) still do not overlap dramatically, so IMHO you never exactly know what the next step will be, as it’s the companies thinking a few steps ahead …

  • It is so obvious that Google will buy SFDC, then they can beat MSFT in the enterprise space as well as search…

  • I am a big fan of zoho.

There is a reason why Marc Benioff is desperately trying to buy them off, Zoho is a better product and very reasonably priced.

  • fail to see the news here, no new new thing

  • True.. no news here.. SFDC is too expensive and hard for commoners to use. They are but a fancy tool for Google to deliver free services. No meat there quite yet. We’ll see when these 2 spill the beans on something great!!! I do not see it happening any time soon.

  • Is there a way for me to scan paper documents directly to salesforce.com?

  • This is going to be big…real big!
