Erick Schonfeld, you should be embarrassed. Google IS CROWD-SOURCING for an icon. Maybe you didn't read the rest of the blog post, so I'll give you the link to where you can submit your anti-unicorn ideas.

We noticed that the G looked a lot like our G. Take a look at http://www.wsg.net/blog.php?cat=26, and see what you think. Little different for us as the G stands for Gile, the family which founded our business, and we've used the G as a way to tie some of the marketing and logos together.

I too agree they should have stuck to the favicon brand. A favicon change without changes in the service are just confusing.

BTW- I'm not an expert on this because we're using an animated favicon for http://businesscard2.com and I can almost guarantee there are people who find our new favicon irritating.

Google - stick at building great technology and software - your design sucks! Hire some good designers from Apple pllllleeeease!

i kept skipping over my google tab in my browser because the little g was so week, I didn't realize it was search results.

What i have noticed is that all the Google sites (that I use) now have the little g icon. Might have been nicer to do a theme which would brand them as having more than just one product.

G with a magnify glass for search page, g-mail icon, analystics, adsense, etc, etc.
I'm all for change, but I think the current g weakens their branding

I think this will all blow over in time. Google knows that people are not spending time obsessing over the favicon logo they get when going to Google pages. Google is smart and will continue to focus on getting people into and out of their pages with either their wanted search result or their wanted advertisement, and people won't have the time to worry about the ok favicon logo. Or at least I own't.

I guess u did not have the patience to go through the complete post before blogging about it yourself!!

i don't like the new favicon to be honest. It doesn't remind me on Google. When I first saw it I was confused and checked twice if this is Google or not. The reason I don't like it is the lower-case (I would defenitely stick to the upper-case one) and the color blue (maybe this is just me, but I see Google more in red, but I guess that is just personal). And putting it on a colored background like in example 4 would also be more attractive.
