I beg to differ. This product filled a gap that is temporarily frustrating a lot of consumers… no direct link between PC and TV. It may have been a lo-tech solution, but it held a lot of promise. If they had mad it compatible with all A/V codecs and allowed users to stick any kind of USB key in it for storage, they’d have had a winner.

I followed a link here to read about just one thing.. San Disk’s now dead product…

Everyone else:

Personally I would not buy the product because I have older computers that are already able to output to Television, and they only need a quick install of something like MythTV to turn them into a much more robust system to play media, be it pictures, audio, or AV content including DVDs.

I can use ANY usb thumbdrive to transfer content if I didn’t already have my home wired with gigabit ethernet.

Sure, not everyone has gigabit, but 10/100 or even wireless is more than enough in most instances.

To compete for power efficiency: Look into software like MythTV and you’ll see the added bonus features more than make up for the very small increase in power when in use.

Size: No reason to compete there, but you gain the abillity to browse the internet and local network shares from the TV, play some games, check the weather, and much more – in exchange for a little extra size.

Keeping in mind the other benefit of these kinds of softwares, upgrade ability in both hardware and software and it’s a winner for many people around the world…

From the environmental side… recycling your old small form factor PC can make more sense than simply discarding it, or storing it (why would someone store an old computer other than when moving?)

If you don’t have an old computer: there are many surplus outlets for used computers fully capable of becoming home media PCs… often for less than some of these micro devices that one might worry about losing or breaking.

I do offer Kudos to San Disk for attempting to make something to fill this roll in a micro format vs. small form factor.. Maybe it was just a little too speciallized?
