Google is fighting the same war in Russia as it is in China against Baidu.com. Considering that Google is half Russian (Sergei Brin) and half US (Larry Page) and its billions of dollars, it should be able to gain a dominant market share.

Yandex’s results are much more liable to spam than Google’s are. That’s for sure. Also all other services from Yandex (like Maps and stuff) really sucks. So Google is gonna beat Yandex sooner or later.

Google is quite popular in Russia, but Yandex provides more relevant results for queries in Russian. That’s why people prefer it.

Google is not even used as much in Russia. Yandex is so much better for Russian people that Google better consider buying them then wasting money this way.

Don’t really think they have good chances. Yandex delivers better results then google and they have a minimalistic search page too: ya.ru It seems google is trying to target the people that don’t use internet yet before yandex gets some capital from IPO and starts advertising.
