A month before the original iPhone release in 2007, Digg’s Kevin Rose made a set of bold predictions. Citing inside information, he said the device would have a slide out keyboard, a touch screen and two batteries (one for the MP3 player, one for the phone).
The iPhone did indeed have a touch screen.
Now Rose is back with a new prediction on the 3G iPhone next week. He says Apple will be releasing a low end iPhone for just $200. “Now could be a good time to get some Apple stock,” he says. Watch the video below and make your own prediction.

i miss the screen savers
This isn’t really a new prediction. Many of us realized that this would be possible if AT&T actually came through with their $200 subsidy bringing the $400 iPhone to the $200 mark. Maybe they did?
He’s been wrong every single time.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a shareholder.
Dave – he does say he owns some apple stock at the end.
If he’s wrong, I’ll look stupid when I only bring $200 to the AT&T Store.
I hope AT&T starts subsidizing the new iPhone. I think Apple has established the value of the iPhone to consumers. Now it is time to move units, move them as fast as you can.
I feel that is apple plays it’s cards right, it could dominate the phone industry for years to come.
This has been a rumor for a while, Engadget mentioned it multiple times.
Now is Apple going to simultaneously also release it in Canada! I’ve waited long for an official release here, or the hype once again will be killed for me.
@Arrington: future post title for you:
Time for another Michael Arrington “I know everything” Twitter bashing
Gary Vaynerchuk and Kevin Rose on Seesmic all day. What does this say about Seesmic? find out here: http://ryanagra...ose-on-seesmic/
so what are we all going to do with all these old iphones?
was just wonder what’s on more silicon valley minds – iphone rumors or the fact that oceans are fall intents and purposes dying?
@ Mike
Throw them out of a car window?
Sooo I’m pretty sure we learned last year that he’s full of shit. Has anything changed?
This is why I subscribe to TechCrunch. To spew beer on my laptop screen while laughing. Nice one, Arrington. On the other hand…
Intentional (and morbid) seasons. Huh.
Not exactly a far-fetched prediction though.
@Kevin
give the audience your undivided attention – if you speak to someone, then bring them into the conversation
it’s basic etiquette, not to mention rude – to turn away to talk or handle something while still on camera
my take on kevin’s rumor {seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”:{”value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/rGXORK1A8o_th1.jpg”}”title”:{”value”:”my take on kevin’s rumor ”}”videoUri”:{”value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/3QLoprxiMp”}}}
WTF? Prediction? Could he have chosen something less substantial?
Heres one for ya!
I predict that the new iPhone will come with some kind of improvement! Maybe software, maybe hardware! Also, Apple will accompany the new phone with (Wait for it) some kind of PR campaign!!
There you have it!
Kevin Rose’s head is in the clouds. I’m changing my homepage from digg to something else.
I predict that Techcrunch will have atleast 3 posts on the new iphone and pro Microsoft articles.
“He says Apple will be releasing a low end iPhone….”
Isnt the IPhone low end to start with? I don’t get it…
I wouldn’t be that suprised if there was a cheap ($200) iPhone out soon. The iPhone and Android have a lot of value as app platforms, and a lot of apps will be on both. Android is designed to scale down to less expensive phones, which might put some pressure on Apple.
Want to get one of the cool apps that will be on both platforms? http://www.zintin.com
Maybe on June 9th all our iPhones suddenly become iPod Touches…uh oh
Low end iphone doesn’t make sense unless there is a cheaper non-unlimited data plan. If you are going to spend 1500 over 2 years on a plan, that 200 bucks isn’t going to be the deal breaker.
Unlike ipods in the mp3 market, iphones will have intense competition and att to deal with. iphone won’t give AAPL the growth it needs to justify a P/E that is that high AAPL @ 40, NOK @ 10, MSFT @ 15, HPQ @15. Instead of buying pumped aapl hype stock, i rather be watching bargain aapl competitors’ stocks for idiots who are dumping them.
Rose, don’t play the pump and dump. Just go back to smoking that joint.
FYI, APPL’s market share went down in the 4th quarter, while RIM is up
I guess people are choosing food over an Apple.
PUN INTENDED.
I predict his haircut will still be terrible when the IPhone launches
video & GPS will be the killer functionality added. who cares if its $200….i paid $400 for my 1st one and it was money well spent.
he didnt say if that was 200 US or some other currency, plenty of wiggle room.
Apple need to do something because the shiny coating is start to chip away
http://www.reut...044572220080530
He was correct with the iPod nano but I don’t believe this.
I think it will just be the sole model. Similar price point but a chance of carrier subsidies. I don’t think the iPhone is ready to branch out into cheaper models just yet.
Lots of people predicted a lower-end Mac mini too. Thing is, Apple doesn’t play in the low end markets on any of it’s hardware. It gets a premium on the brand in the mid to high end markets from people who want the cachet of the Apple brand and from those who appreciate elegant/intuitive design.
Of course, mobile is a whole new ball game with vast revenue potential outside of actual hardware sales.
It will be interesting to see.
Maybe it will even come out here in Canada one day (although that’s not Apple’s fault).
anyone else see this as a seesmic-investor-techcrunch post? no disclosure?
trading on insider information?
Isn’t that illegal?
My prediction – Kevin Rose drank too much organic tea before that video.
We shouldn’t be surprised when Apple comes out with another iphone model (3G, of course) at, say, the $399 price point and push the existing one to $199 (while beefing up storage or something else minor?). Not sure how it impacts the pricing of the ipod lineup, but it is similar to Apple’s music strategy over time–as you scale, cover all your price points so you don’t give the competition much wiggle room.
- agent mulder lives
@33 so a disclosure is required for every post using Seesmic? C’mon…
Im starting to think it’s true. I’ve heard it on some of the blogs in the past month, and I can only imagine that kevin has a ton of connections at apple
Was that Gary V in the background. Weird how you recognize these things. If I can just buy the thing out right and switch carriers, that would be sweet. On pay a premium to be on another carrier.
I wouldn’t take anything this kid says seriously.
Here’s are more of his other great video.
http://seesmic....deos/9DWG0RoB3O
WTF? …. You expect us to take this guy seriously?
http://seesmic....deos/XzpMzequ2K
Taking it in the butt? ( listen to the lyrics )
He needs to hire himself a PR agent to save this dignity.
That is a good piece of information.
Probably we should but Broadcom stock to. As the chips for iPhone and the touchscreen are being provided by them.
Not to late to get into BRCM Broadcom.
Cheers, Nag
@ 3 Don Wilson
He’s been wrong every single time.
you took the words right out of my mouth “I was just about to say that.”
How is it you can be wrong every single time and still people listen to what you have to say… “Amazing”
The next iPhone has already been leaked, what’s the point of posting the foggy, boring speculation from this person Kevin?
The $199 iPhone subsidized by AT&T is an old speculation.
And why not? 3G iPhone at $399 for high-end and keep the 2G iPhone 8GB at $199 with some AT&T subsidize, to make it affordable for teenagers, the greatest early adopters
Mike, in fact TechCrunch already predicted it one month ago…
http://www.tech...w-as-199-in-us/
Nobody cares what this nerd has to say. Report something worthwhile
subsidizing the 2g iPhone would be retarded. If they wanted to do that why have the current iPhones been out of stock fo such a long time now?
Sometimes, it seems that Kevin is a little too full of himself.
What about last time? The iPhone having two batteries? Please.
Uh, I think Kevin might be careful about what he predicts about Apple, and what he thinks investors should do regarding Apple stock, if he is a shareholder (or plans to short). SEC might not likie.
