I used to have to screen startups at Yahoo! in the late 90's - powerpoint after powerpoint after powerpoint.

If any startup tried to break in my house with a portable projector and a handful of branded usb keys I would not be responsible for my actions.

Hello all,

sorry not responding earlier but right after the TechCrunch visit the HDD in my Notebook crashed.
First of all, I must say that Michael at least took the time and talked to me. He was listening, even as I was not invited. I guess he could have run out to the back or just told me "get lost" but he was fair and offered me to come in.
I did not break in, just knocked at the door as you would do at any business. It took me all my heart to knock on that door and so I was so nervous that I was not able to do better however, the goal was to get feedback since I am on my own. I knew that Michael is able to bring glory to a site or to crush it right there but at one point you have to take risks and hope you are not getting crushed;-)
To all those that have tried gloofi and were not satisfied, remember, it is still at ALPHA and as mentioned, just developed by one person. I have a vision as so many other entrepreneurs and do whatever it takes to make it happen. Therefore I need feedback to improve the site.

Jason, one of the TechCrunch writers asked me "Why do I want to improve/change search since everybody uses Google?". I said that I don't think that is the end yet and I want to try to pitch in my ideas and maybe some parts emerge from it.

Even though I might have made a full out of myself to go there, I still have to thank Michael and everybody there at TechCrunch to at least let me in the door and give me some time. I will take his advice and change the design as well making it easier to use.

Best,

Martin

Michael,

Have you ever written about a startup without disclosing that you accepted Starbucks and Red Bull in exchange for a writeup and a break in? Full disclosure, man. ;)

I had a similar experience and added one of those doorbell / camera / door buzzer to unlock it from my seat things. It is good you have a back door, but visual ID by the perpetrator makes that sneak out look like a cowardly retreat. I suggest adding a set of blinds or that 2 way film to put on the window.

This one seems to have been friendly, but some people have other (not so friendly) intentions. Sorry for sounding paranoid.

I have to go now, a black helicopter has been following me.

For those who don't know this yet. We weren't at Michaels house to pitch our company. We had a meeting to talk about the upcoming Next Web conference. Check out the video we made during the event:

the formula for success if you decide to descend upon TechCrunch unannounced:

1) bring food & beer
2) make sure your site is up & running
3) give a good pitch & don't suck

oh and one more thing:

4) check Twitter / Friendfeed to make sure Mike is awake. you wouldn't like him when he's sleepy.

Further example that Silicon Valley Tech community has lots its edge, its excitement, its spontaneity. This was very much a 90's move, that would have been welcomed back then as motivation.

Would he have been so rude to Serge if he had found him sitting in his house trying to show him Google?

Silicon Valley has been taken over by Stanford snobs who have destroyed this valley

OK, so two addresses appear above (the Atherton one from Google, and the Manhattan Beach one one from the Whois record). Here's one more for you stalker wackos (who may or may not all be German...)

Go to the San Mateo County website, and look up the Atherton house, and you'll see that the tax bills get sent to Virginia. Advanced users would stalk that one. (Of course, it may be a Drop Box in a Mailboxes Etc.)

Geez, we have too much time on our hands... we should be starting 2.0 businesses!

that was unbelievably rude

"my team couldn't lie about my whereabouts"
they don't have to lie they could have just said don't come in. letting him come in and then embarrassing him is so unethical (even if he is the one at fault by showing up without an appointment)

amazing show of cowardice by the tc team

From just the front page of Gloofi, it stated the following:
<i>gloofi is the first fully user controlled search engine bringing Tag search, Global search, Human search and Semantic search capabilities to you.
gloofi is not using an existing index, you are building the index and controlling it by approving/disapproving sites and content as well as voting and commenting it. You have the chance to create the best search result there is by being involved in the whole quality process.

gloofi is not only changing the quality of the results it is also changing on how to use the results. With interactive menus for each item in the result you can choose to Bookmark URL's or Send them via email. You can mark items as positive or negative, drop it or write notes and Tags for it. The cool preview section gives you pictures, short information, maps or even videos right on the result screen before making the decision to go to the site. The Details page let you add URL's to other pages and makes browsing from one result to another a breeze as you do not have to go back to the result any more to go to the next item.</i>

The descriptions looks awesome and I have to say as a search engine algorithm expert myself, I think that this guy is on to something here. One of the most difficult task in developing a unified universal search engine of today, is how to combine symbolic-based search algorithms (computer manipulation of symbols or objects such as in semantic/natural language) with numeric-based search ones (high-speed number-crunching) such as Google PageRank, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HITS_algorithm" rel="nofollow">HITS</a>, <a href="http://citeseer.ist.psu.edu/lempel00stochastic.html" rel="nofollow">SALSA</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latent_semantic_analysis" rel="nofollow">LSA</a>. The difficulty in combining the 2 methodologies is synonymous with how Physicists find it hard to combine Quantum Mechanics & General Theory of Relativity in a one unified theory (Grand Unification Theory), since the 2 theories are largely inconsistent with each other. There is an attempt to unify these inconsistent theories via <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_gravity" rel="nofollow">Quantum Gravity</a>.

There is progress in the development from the search engine research communities in combining symbolic-based & numeric-based algorithms into unified paradigm, but it is still limited in its success.

So, I can see that Gloofi is an attempt to combine symbolic-based & numeric-based into one. Since the theoretical foundations of these 2 are largely inconsistent with each other. The future of search lies solely in a successful combinations of symbolic-based & numeric-based algorithms into a unified paradigm and the one who would successfully able to do this, will be a winner.

I am not sure if Gloofi is doing this combination in the right way, one has only to wait till its full version is deployed to see if it is any better , however I wouldn't rule it out yet, just because a search using a few words/phrases had returned poor result.
