Google Gets Fancy With Google I/O TShirts. Too Fancy
by Michael Arrington on May 28, 2008

With all the thousands of engineers at google, you’d think someone speaks binary. But perhaps not. Attendees of the Google I/O conference today were given t-shirts that, presumably, were supposed to spell GOOGLEIO on the front in binary. Just one problem, the actual message printed spells GOOGLEKO:

G: 01000111
O: 01001111
O: 01001111
G: 01000111
L: 01001100
E: 01000101
K: 01001011
O: 01001111

The “I” that should’ve been in place of the “K” would’ve been 01001001.

If you got one of these, save it. It’s definitely a collector’s item now. I’ll pay $50 for an XL, if anyone’s selling.

Check for yourself here - and remember that upper and lower case letters have different binary spellings. Thanks for the tip Randy.

God.. thats nerd

You found the easter egg!

Not like Google to make such a basic error… :-p

I kinda like the shirt, it’s a little abstract so not too nerdy.

Michael,

You have passed the tee shirt hiring question.

Please proceed to Google HR for processing.

Thanks,
Google HR

(seriously though… any chance these were left over from a Finnish swag fest?)

@4 — for, otherwise, it won’t make news!! :P

And this company is worth how much. I expect the stock to take a huge hit tomorrow because of that.

I just wonder who’s the geek/nerd/… that decided to check thier spelling in binary

No need to pay, I grabbed one for ya!

Me and Jess Mah are dropping by uninvited next week anyway, I’ve got some wine/booze for Heather and the crew :)

Michael,

Do you really worship Google that much that you think a stupid misprint (probably the graphic artist’s fault) on a stupid T-shirt will become a valuable COLLECTOR’S item??

Jesus Christ, that is over the top. Get back to reality, and get back to work looking for REAL things to blog about. You need to get out of Silicon Valley for a while or maybe get a little more sleep.

What is the hourly wage for a binary trans-linguist?

#11 - To be honest, this is the kind of stuff I enjoy reading about at 10PM after a long day. It’s pretty light reading and an interesting thing to know about Google… Not everything has to be 100% serious…

Maybe it’s the t that was supposed to be given away in a year from now…?

Google out baby

I think it was intentionally done. The first thing I thought of was “knock out” just like Zombie Flanders. I think that they are hoping for a knock out with the Google I/O stuff.

It does make sense. With Google I/O they are hoping to knock out a bunch of competitors in each of the areas that they announced stuff. It could have even been an internal joke that accidentally got mixed with the right translation.

Thanks for a big chuckle Mr. Jack :-D

Google, next time, leave the binary to MIKROSOFT.

I’ll pay $50 as well for an XL. Shoot me an email: donwilson@gmail.com

yeah, i’m with #17. i think this was an intentional “pun.” it’s a nice easter egg, it’s only one letter off, and it says a lot about google, as in google i/o is a KNOCK OUT! it’s nerd humor.

Mike, email me for a shirt.

I’ll pay for a shirt as well. Classic idea…. love it.

I’ll pay $500 for a t-shirt.

Would have been more better if it were 01000010

you didn’t get it at all.
It’s a code like in indiana jones or the Davinci code.

the K (01001011)
then the additional bit is only a 2 (10)

sing some magical voodoo invocation using some old language (ASCII art?)

I/
I\
you cut in half (K/2)
-> I/
-> Google I/O

I suddenly feel like I am posting in a Slashdot thread…

I’d have to agree with no. 13. The start-ups get old after a while, and these stories are interesting to me.

Email me at google-io-shirts@theillustratedlife.com if you would like a shirt. I don’t have Internet at the hotel, but I will get back to you tomorrow (Thursday).

Google IO is a Google ad for Google products (that employers are shelling out $300+/employee to attend). Thing is, it’s working. They brought fridges stocked with soda, racks of candy, pool tables, foosball, all the things that remind developers that Google is better than their current owner (company). The speakers preach all about Google products and why they are benevolent people thinking about a better future for everyone, not just Google. And then comes the KO of bars w/o lines, (tasty) catered food, arcade games, black lights, and Flight of the Conchords. Google knows nerds well.

i have a xl shirt i will send you for free. just email me.

Hmm..Creative but I’m not keen with it

other explanation.
I/O

01001001
+
000000/0

01001011

they just wanted to keep everything in a 8×8 grid.

PS: i definitely had too much of their candies all day.

surprised that any of you webdev “engineers” could even figure out how to convert binary.

I can vouch for the nerdiness of the guy who found this. He is sitting right by me. High quality! :)

GOOGLEKO = Google Knocked Out ;-)), the game is over!!!

I like the sound of Google KO, personally.

Google is a misspelled gogool, so it’s no biggie.

i would like to have one too (size medium or large) Anyone?

Maybe they should give away this T-shirt instead:
http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshir.....ions/5aa9/

I think, instead, we should put the text of this blog post on a t-shirt - with my comment on the back of the t-shirt, and make _that_ a collector’s item.

Why?

The KO goes with the ‘Innovation out in the Open’ that Google is putting in your _face_, but you were too slow to realize it. I’m the Juggernaut, b*tch!

Just like Google ‘forgot the L’ in the logo, too, right?

Sheesh.

That’s why I visit these parts - to make sure the kiddies don’t get too far off track.

In fact, don’t bother with the t-shirt, just send me your money.

:)

No that’s right, they just didn’t have space for the “Microsoft” at the end:

Google KO Microsoft.

Fatality.

LOL.

GOOGLE GUYS DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
They got pwned by their own rudimentary mistake by trying too hard to be cool, which they are not (not anymore anywaysf). Really embarrassing.

Microsoft would just love it, if TShirtgate could overshadow the whole Google 1/0 Event

Submitted the story to Slashdot. Hope they’ll accept it: it’s a typical Slashdot-style story :)

KO is the danish word for COW :)
