StartYourTube To Change Its Name. Anyone Surprised?
by Jason Kincaid on May 27, 2008

StartYourTube, the white label video site we covered last month that lets users create their own “branded YouTubes”, has decided to change its name. The company sent out the following email last week to its members:

Hi everyone ,

We have to choose another domain name for StartYourTube.com
Please take one minute to give us your choice

best,
startyourtube team

Included in possible domain choices are “BoostCast.com” and “StartYours2.com”.

The wording seems to indicate that this isn’t exactly by choice (lawsuit anyone?). However, StartYourTube says that the company has decided on the name change on its own accord. Apparently users of the service want their content to stand on its own, without any kind of implied affiliation to YouTube.

Thanks to Mark Avey for the tip.

Users can get their own domains for their accounts.

We are talking about a valuable free hosting service - and the option of shelling out $5 or 10 for a cheap domain service to add to your account.

Unless you are in dire poverty - what right has anyone got to complain about their name and still have time to create and upload their videos

Holly Cr*p, that’s genius! You know this web 2.0 craze does seem like the gold rush, is full of crazy sh*t like this, who the f… wants to make a youtube site if youtube already exists, obviously no one would make it if not for themselves whatever it is, not to make other people rich.

The website doesnt work boostcast.com right?

@ YouYap

No, they haven’t decided on their new domain name yet.

its very competative to ask member which domain to selet as any one can register it and hold it

Youtube probably put pressure on this company to change their name. Check out these 2 video porn sites (they have both tremendous traffic)
Youporn.com and Redtube.com

Hey,TechCrunchers! Any legal savvy can tell me what’s the real risk of using a domain (trademark) which somehow uses such common words such as: face, book, friend, tube, you, link, space, and so on … Thanks in advance,

I think startyourweareinbetatube.com or startyourweareinbetasite.com will work.

There’s sooo many options for cool names out there.
Why do people go small? Think outside the Sili Valley folks. Think what names fire up the youth. What word combo has the cool factor?

Don’t conform!

Hi
I would like to thank you all for helping us finding a new name for StartYourTube.com, especially Mike S, that kindly offer us its domain name excast.com at a normal price.

If you think you have an amazing name for us, we are ready to hear it.
I have created a group on FB so it will be easy for you:

How come when an independent movie website asks people to vote on movies for an upcoming film festival it’s called crowdsourcing, but when a website changes it’s name -asking people to come to the site and vote - it’s not called crowdsourcing?

i Think its okay to use one common word, but in this case, they used yourtube instead of youtube which is too close. Obviously if they just used tube, then it would be passible, like startyourowntube or startuptube

Hey all,

I went searching for some replacement code or a new you tube type video platform to replace what I’m using at my video site which is currently using the YouTube code. I searched and located some information on “Start Your Tube” followed by this post here at Tech Crunch.

Yep, I went to “Boost Cast” and had just started to sign up when I thought I best check out some of the sites already out there. Wow, smart move on my part (patting self on back), I don’t know that I was ever so irritated in my life with the junky AdBrite ads popping up at me with every Boost Cast site I visited. No, not little baby teeny popup windows that my pop up blocker would automatically shut down… we’re talking about those nasty mondo Adbrite ads that take over the entire page where you’re forced to click on “Skip Ad” in order to get back to the page your were just at! I understand that Boost Cast wants to generate revenue, but with the Adbrite full page, take you out of the site, slap in your face, take you out of the moment ads? Pleeeease, stop it, just stop it now!

Needless to say after that depressing experience my search now continues for a company that will not be pissing off my visitors. Nope, Boost Cast is not for me, and I can’t imagine for anyone else however, you be the judge. Check out sites that are using Boost Cast and see just how long you can stand the intense AdBrite full page pop up pain…. not long I’m confident.

Off on my quest, take care.

Edward

i think, there still a lot of possiblities to run a youtube clone if you have aniche content site, because en youtube are so many boring videos, its hard to find really good ones. Or like a extra bonus for you site, foto-gallery, videos, blog. gigg clobnes, web directory and so on. the combination of al makes sense to me.
