I think that people are finding it hard to believe these 3 features imply hints of a developing web OS, when many sites have features like this already, simply because it works well for a user interface. A navigation bar on top with quick links? Even TC has that. Search on top? Look at Blogger. These features have been around on many websites forever, so claiming that this is moving towards a Web OS seems kind of foolish. If there were some innovative parallel between their new design and a desktop OS it would be an actual story.

To say that FB is trying to become an OS because they’re improving their UX design is ludicrous. Now, that doesn’t mean that they’re not trying to create some sort of web-based operating system (although I don’t buy it). It just means that one can’t necessarily deduce that any company that uses UX metaphors that happen to exist in popular operating systems are themselves trying to create an operating system.

I’d say if FB is an OS then not for the web but for FB, as closed as they are (as their understanding of I/O seems to be more on the I-side, actually literally ).

OS is not desktop . OS take care of your hardware and does not necessary having a desktop environment.

Eric, so what is your definition of an ‘operating system’ and an ‘application’? From what your saying i’ll soon be able to login into Facebook and click the ’system info’ menu tab at the top above my profile and view MY system’s info or something, will there be some more options to format my HD or write to my CD…? Interesting stuff cant wait to see that lol
