CrunchBase Now Integrated With LinkedIn API
by Michael Arrington on May 23, 2008

We will shortly be releasing a new version of CrunchBase, the company and people database wiki that you often see linked to here on TechCrunch.

In the meantime, though, we’ve added a few new features to the product, including integration with LinkedIn via their API. You can now click a button and see if you are linked to any of the employees at any particular startup. The image to the left shows Google, but you may be surprised to find a connection to someone at even the smaller new companies we cover. The integration is identical to what Business Week announced last December.

More news from CrunchBase coming soon. And if you haven’t put in your own bio and picture yet, or information about your startup, please add it. We’re now tracking 4,460 startups and over 10,000 people.

If you want to add the LinkedIn widget to your own site, there’s more information here.

Did LinkedIn finally open up their API? or is it still for ‘premium’ partners like techcrunch and simplyhired?

Nice.. “do as I say, also as I do”.. practising what you preach, good example :P

Mayur - um, actually I don’t know. We just asked them if we could do it and they said something along the lines of “ok.” I’ll check.

Mike, for your information, EditGrid has created a CrunchBase mashup. Our users can now get CrunchBase data by using crunchbase() function in EditGrid spreadsheet.

i.e. =crunchbase(”facebook”,”total_funding”)

You can try it yourself at: http://www.editgrid.com/new

“Insert” > “Remote Data…” - select CRUNCHBASE

Is there a financial partnership here also?

BTW, Facebook hired 2 foreign security goons to come after me after I published that I wanted to sell my social search here. If you want to let me have a blog post Mike, I can write about it in detail.
I cc’d emails to each other to determine that they were fake, then I lead them on a wild goose chase.

Mike, I was wondering, Is there a financial partnership here also?

Such as do you get any revenue from them when people click through?

Hi Mayur,

As Arrington says, anyone can add the company insider widget to their blog or site. Here’s how you can do that with a few lines of code:

Chris - no financial arrangement. we’re just adding it because we like it. Definitely send those emails. :-)

Great feature. This web 2.0 stuff actually works!

@8,

I’ll prepare it and send you all the original emails and the ones from the lawyer. I am a little worried that some of these people are insane and paranoid and that they would think of physically hurting me in reaction to this.

I wasn’t going to use their actual names, but I can’t prevent you from doing so. I hope you use some kind of judgement if you publish a story based on this.

Look for it later today. I will send it to E. Schonfeld because I only have his gmail.

They’re absolutely nuts. For real.

Very cool. Big fan of crunchbase and LinkedIn. Here is my typical scenario: I find a job opening that I like, look them up on crunchbase and see if I’m connected to any of the executives via LinkedIn. Now it is all together. Thanks Arrington and team.

Randy, don’t forget to add “click on a couple of ads” to that workflow.

The LinkedIn widget appears to run a search for individual words in the business name rather than the entire string. This is less than ideal because as a result it is saying that someone works in my company who actually doesn’t and that could cause a number of foreseeable issues.

Mike, if you get the chance, please feed this back to them - I’m sure you don’t want Crunchbase misleading people. Thanks.

Mike, I sent an email to E. Schonfeld at his gmail address.
Please don’t get me into too much trouble. :)

Chris

That’s really cool, I’m a big Crunchbase user, I contribute to it with my videos, and I hope to partner up with the Crunchbase once I’ll have a serious video directory business going on (I’ll touch base when I’ll have a solid prop to make, if ever :)

+ the Linkedin integration will probably make my work easier

@Mayur - from what I can tell, you can use their widget freely, which is useful to content publishers.

However, I don’t think they have opened up their mythical API, which was leaked late last year, presumably as a vaporous response to Facebook’s announcement.

By API, I am referring to service-oriented access to their treasure trove of people and company data.

Stunningly inane! You’re just a little blog. Crunchbase won’t change that.

nice job guys :)

kudos to Henry & Mark on the integration..
