Skype Adds Movies to the Conversation With Jaman
by Jason Kincaid on May 20, 2008

Skype has partnered with Jaman, an internet movie service, to provide users with thousands of embeddable film scenes that can be added to their chats, profiles, and “mood messages”. The service is still in development, and Skype plans to have it available within the next couple of months.

Jaman’s licensed collection consists almost entirely of independent and foreign films, which will appeal to Skype’s international audience but may put off its American users. Skype has yet to finalize the available clip catalog, but at launch it expects most of the videos offered will be movie trailers as opposed to actual scenes. This limited library doesn’t sound particularly enticing - Skype will need to include more engaging content if they want this to catch on.

It seems that everyone just realized that people like to chat while they’re watching videos. In the last few weeks, we’ve seen new products from Lycos, Videophlow, and Userplane that plan to offer similar features. The trick will be to offer content that people actually want to talk about, which some of these companies don’t seem to have covered yet.

  • Awesome features… I love Skype!

  • Are you kidding me? They are adding movies to Skype, but they can’t get caller ID working in the United States. I use my Skype line for work, and it is great, except if I use it to call people they usually don’t answer because their caller ID shows me as “Unknown Caller” or “0123456780″. Come on Skype, lets get the basics first then move to the extras.

  • Go Skype - great way to expand the offering!

  • Skype is used less than MSN,I like MSN very much

  • Why is everyone so bothered about customers in US (49 million people will get internet access this year in india alone), the market is growing globally. a company no longer needs to be US centric, where economy is down (buying power is shrinking) as compared to Asia, Australia, Europe. other parts of the world are becoming very attractive markets. Maybe the films/clips jaman offers are enticing enough for other customers. But it remains to be seen if this is a attractive proposition.

  • It is a great move by skype. This feature will surely engage people into more skyping.

  • so we can watch movie with skype buddy? {seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”:{”value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/6GoNP8pLeE_th1.jpg”}”title”:{”value”:”so we can watch movie with skype buddy? ”}”videoUri”:{”value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/LBgrR4ERay”}}}

  • Congrats to Gaurav and team. Jaman is AWESOME and this feature really makes sense for the international market. Too bad ebay couldn’t figure out something as interesting to do with Skype!

  • It sounds similar (with less content for now) to Microsoft’s Messenger TV feature in Windows Live Messenger. See http://messengertv.msn.com/ (note: I am probabaly biased since I am the guy who got Messenger TV built and deployed to 21 countries)

  • I gonna say I’m sick tired of multimedia embedded everywhere.
    Then we blame ISPs as they block/filter P2P because there isn’t enough bandwidth. Hallo? there is a special device to see media: it’s called TV.

  • this is a very nice tool for calling skype to skype only..very usefull.
