Hulu Shares Usage Stats, Expands Distribution Network
by Mark Hendrickson on May 20, 2008

Hulu, the online joint video venture between NBC and News Corp that officially launched two months ago, is sharing some stats on its viewership.

According to the Nielsen Net Ratings, Hulu led all network sites in total video streams and overall engagement time in April. Hulu users are streaming over 63 million videos and, on average, are watching over two hours of video per month each.

Hulu is not just a destination site; it also syndicates content to a network of other sites, such as AOL, Comcast, MSN, MySpace, and Yahoo. Today they’re announcing that they’ve also signed up TV.com, TVGuide.com, Break.com, Zap2it.com, BuddyTV, Flixster, and MyYearbook. That’s an impressive lineup and one that’s sure to help make Hulu a household name before long.

The Los Angeles-based company is working to get its content out on the web through more grassroots channels as well. Hulu users can now send videos directly to MySpace, Facebook, StumbleUpon, Reddit, Windows Live, Delicious, Google Bookmarks and Digg without having to embed any code (Hulu uses each of those sites’ sharing interfaces to do this instead of implementing a service like Gigya).

Videos can also be added to sites that support oEmbed by simply submitting their URLs. The oEmbed sharing format automatically converts the URLs into embed codes, making the copy and paste process even easier.

Finally, Hulu says that it is working with Facebook to display mini-feed notifications about what you’ve been watching for your friends.

Isn’t this the company that Michael Arrington used to call “clownco”? Is he still doing that? I don’t think so. Why? Because, like many many other things, he’s been dead wrong about Hulu. They’re doing just fine right now.

Since launch I watch Hulu almost everyday, there are so many good shows on there now. It’s great to see so many older shows on there too :) It’s an awesome site and I hope it does well so they can add more.

Hulu is no longer an NBC property. It’s spun off.

I dig Hulu for backfill of missed and un-DVR-ed shows. Wish they could have more consistent amount of content, like all episodes from every season. Now it’s a bit random and unpredictable.

@Jenkins

This gets back to the debate on these boards about Michael Arrington’s credibility issues. I, for one, like TC but do believe with issues like Hulu Michael does have a credibility problem that he needs to fix.

Have you seen how Michael and his pinions talk about how he is right ALL the time in their posts?

This is one he was wrong on BIG TIME and yet they just skirt the issue….how nice!

My PC viewing of TV shows is usually on an airplane. When will I be able to do that easily and legally?

@jenkins and @idiotArrington

mike didn’t start the clown co. name, google did. read the second paragraph in this post mike made back in ‘07.

for a non-TC reference i did a quick search and found this news.com site stating that it was actually youtube employees that started calling the then yet-to-be-named hulu “the clown company.”

They seem to have a nice selection of shows but not the necessarily the best selection of episodes. can’t seem to find any that I want to watch. Has anyone heard of tidaltv.com? <<watch cable tv!

@Brian

i don’t care what michael called it. the point is that he was adamant in his BUSINESS ANALYSIS that they would fail. they did not.

It’s a great service, bit annoying that as it’s not directly available in Europe we have to use work-arounds to view it here but the concept of Hulu is definitely one of the best things since sliced bread.

I really hope though that rather than just expanding the community aspect onto many sites in which I’ll just end up seeing you can’t view this content blablabla till I go on a VPN they’re planning on moving global soon as well. But I bet people outside of the US will stay out of luck on this one as well for quite some time.

Isn’t this the same company Arrington used to bash relentlessly?

Oh no! He got it wrong that Hulu would fail.

Does it matter? He’s not infallible.

Mark, I’m looking at the April NetRatings Report and see that the time spent on site per user per month averages about 13 minutes. Where are you seeing the two hours average? I think they’re a good site, but that two hours number sounds off.

Brian

Does anyone know if Hulu partners get a rev share of ad revenue Hulu collects in exchange for sending traffic to Hulu?

@idiotArrington:

yeah, after reading your reply i realized you mentioned nothing about the clown co. name. my mistake.

Michael couldn’t bring himself to write this post about Hulu looking good? :-)

@Brian: “Hulu users are streaming over 63 million videos and, on average, are watching over two hours of video per month each.”

Per month, not per day.

HENDRIKSON! IS THAT YAHOO POST UP YET!?

I’m with Slevi on this one…launching a service on the WORLDWIDEWEB and then limiting its use to a single country seems contrary to the whole point of the internet and only serves to create ill-will from those who are geographically disenfranchised.

Hulu is the future of online TV content and all the networks need to get with the program. I don’t watch regular Television anymore I only watch TV on the Internet. Hulu is also the way I can place and embed content on my own websites. My only deal with them is that I wish they would start some kind of revenue share on the advertisers they put in between each TV Show.

Dear Hulu,

People outside the U.S. also watch TV series. Give us some love.
Sort it out, please.

Thanks,
Spiros
