We’re hearing that the first showing of Weekend King, which chronicles the life of a fairly pathetic Silicon Valley programmer, was a crowd pleaser (let us know in the comments what you thought). The next showing is on May 24.
In true Hollywood style, though, everything turns out fine in the end with our hero/protagonist finding love. Bleh.
Rupert is awkward, friendless, and loveless. He’s also rich. In a quest to beat his loneliness, Rupert buys a small bankrupt town in Utah. He expects to lord over the populace but ends up contending with people that don’t buy into his newly invented confidence. But grappling with his bad investment turns out to be the key for finally finding friendship and love.

I saw this last Saturday. It was a well made and acted indie movie that does a little tech lampooning. I could see it going to Sundance or something. I recommend it if you happen to be around San Francisco this weekend.
much better story than most hollywood schlock, and overall very enjoyable. so in accordance with the post, if they had killed off all the characters maybe it’d be a masterpiece..?
I was out in the mission this weekend and caught the flick. It is solid indie fare. If you’re looking for expansive sets and special effects, this is not the right movie. If you want to see a fun portrayal of real, flawed people stumbling through real, flawed lives, this is a winner. I love a good Hollywood hyperbole as much as the next guy, but Weekend King is more credible, and hence easier to lose yourself in. I’ve been recommending it to friends.

This movie is hilarious.
Great picture - real down-home effort with good laughs and clever twists. The acting was surprisingly good - stand out performances by the two lead females.
This movie’s a hoot. The people are awkward, funny, hopeless, and hopeful in turns… just like real humans. Good times!
Excellent film, great writing, some really funny moments. Definitely going back to the second showing on the 24th.
A romantic comedy that guys actually like watching (wait for the waitress to “clean the table”, it’s hilarious). There are lots of off beat moments but when the cast is on, they’re on! Well worth the price of admission and a great Bay Area flick.
This was an excellent film. Could be edited a little more to clean up some areas, but besides that, very well done. If you can, catch it this saturday at 7pm at the Victoria Theatre on Mission. It’s only 10 bucks, and totally worth it!
Real deal stuff with a very funny edge….I couldn’t control the tear ducts for an hour after, from all the laughter……well done, coming again with a “Bus Load of Friends!
I was pleasantly impressed by the film and the acting. There are some real laugh-out-loud moments in this film, even to the point of tears. Definitely worth a look!
I had a great time watching this Sat night. I also heard the techies in the audience laughing (and/or groaning) at the lame power point techniques of characters in the office scenes. Pretty funny. I liked it myself for the offbeat art focus, and quirky small town stuff.
A Hollywood Mogul meets Weekend King:
It’s like . . . . no, no its not like that. Its like . . . . .
No, its not like that either.
Find someone from San Francisco
to explain it.
Great movie! I just saw it last night, and very much enjoyed it. The friends I took to see it also thought it was really entertaining - the powerpoint bit was awesome.
Hilarious bay area film. Totally worth seeing.
Mr. Arrington - it’s time for you to see this film. Your Readers have spoken! There aren’t enough “valley” movies and the response has been awesome. What do you say? It’s on for three more weeks at the Victoria.
If Office Space and Sideways had a baby, in Silicon Valley, it would be The Weekend King. Terrific movie!
I just saw Weekend King this past weekend at the Victoria Theatre in SF; outstanding! I can’t remember laughing so hard at a movie in a very long time. It’s been held over for a few more weekends, so please go see it. You won’t regret it.
I saw the film last weekend and I need to see it again because I was laughing so hard, I missed too many of the subsequent lines! It was hilarious, but touching as well - quirky, awkward, flawed people, just like the rest of us - stumbling through their own shortcomings in a humorous but poignant story with some twists and surprises. It is in the same vein as Sideways or Little Miss Sunshine - no glitz, no knock your socks off special effects, no Hollywood hype, but a great story, well written, great acting, and great shots. The escape-from-the-office-cubicle scene and the music to go with it is great. The original music and artwork in the film make it special. Go see it!
