Friday Survey: Do You Own An iPhone?

It’s coming up on a year since the iPhone was released, and the second version appears to be just around the corner. So it’s a good time to check in with our readers and see just how many of you actually use the device.
Please take a second and let us know where you stand.

There is no doubt that the iPhone is one of the most innovative devices to come out in this space. It is not just a “fad” but rather the first step in making a small format computer really useful.
Many of my friends have them and I want want. Not having 3G is a deal-breaker. Having 3G would be worth hacking the phone to allow it to tether to a laptop. Right now I tether my 3G phone via blue tooth to my laptop and this is so useful to me that I could not give that up just to have an iPhone.
I am hopeful………
go blackberry
I’m all about my Blackberry… Screw you, iPhone. Although I do have to say the competition has pushed RIM to make some nice improvements.
How about the option: ‘If it was available in my country I would get it’
Your big ol’ blog isn’t just available to read in the United States you know.
:/
I own it. I have to say that it has changed how I use the phone and internet. It really is a revolutionary device.
I chose the first option, as I have an iPhone. I also wanted to add, while they are still not officially rolled out in my country (Argentina), they are sold, unlocked, all over the place but for a mega-premium price of around 800 USD. And that’s with no official warranty that I know of…
On a side note, apparently Apple is in talks with 2 of the local carriers to bring the iPhone here (I have it on good authority, a regional manager from one of them said that Apple has both deals on the table because their company has the better 3G network, and the other one has a better Flat Rate Data Plan, so while the specifics are still up in the air, we know it’s coming).
The iPhone is cool but I’m waiting for Android. I’ll support open over closed any day!
@magixman - I SSH tunnel through my iPhone all the time, works like a charm for 95% of the things I’d ever need to do on the phone. Also with a terminal on the phone itself, I’m able to remotely fix things that break.
@alex - There’s no GSM where you’re at? Jailbreaking isn’t really all that difficult at all these days…
Where’s the option for “No, I’m waiting until it’s available with a U.S. carrier who is not AT&T.”
Im so anxious for the 3g iphone now. Im going to be so excited if it has GPS, and if there is a way to copy/paste on the thing. I don’t want to leave my cheap sprint sero plan, but I will most likely for the 3g iphone
I hate gadgets.
i like the old, cream-colored, pre-internet phone.
Adrian: Sure is brother, but it has been announced so I’m just waiting. I’m not interested in cracking it.
Where’s the “No, I’m Canadian” choice? lol
“Where’s the option for “No, I’m waiting until it’s available with a U.S. carrier who is not AT&T.””
Agreed.
Yup. Since July. My case is scratched all to hell, its fell out of a moving car and has been dropped countless times. 1 tiny scratch on the glass, no big deal. What I am saying is the phone has held up well to a beating.
Coolest gadget I have ever owned.
Buying the new gen when it comes out. I hope the current owners get them for $200 as well.
I don’t think the iPhone is an overpriced toy, the crackberry was just a better deal- only $50 with a rebate and had all the features I wanted. Plus I don’t have to deal with AT&T. I like having actual buttons to press.
iphones are for girls. The perfect chic toy.
having both an iPhone and a Pearl, I think both devices have merits. The iPhone wins in web surfing though.
I just like the real keyboard on my BlackBerry Curve. I do wish RIM would come out with a touchscreen model though.
I’m planning on making the switch from Sprint as soon as the 3G model is available.
“No, I’m waiting for an android phone”
I don’t think iPhones are overpriced toys, just I want a phone with buttons.
No because i live in a socialist country named Canada.
The iPhone is for dumbass Mactards and fashion lemmings.
I have been considering the iPhone because I travel a lot, and the email features would be really helpful, and it seems incredibly easy to use. But does the iPhone synchronize with Microsoft Outlook 2007 run on a Windows XP platform? Is there anyone who has an iPhone that could share that information? Does just the email synchronize, or also the calendar and contacts?
I don’t have it for a simple reason….AT&T sucks ass in this area. Honestly when I had it they were complete screwups.
-No signal whatsoever anywhere in my house
-Dropped calls all the time…honestly I can say when I had them outside my house I’d get about 50% of my calls end up being dropped
-Weird crap going on with their voice mail. Sometimes the messages disappear completely, other times they disappear only to reappear in a week.
I’ll stick with Verizon for now, their phones may suck(not a lot of choices and you have to use one of the 5 phones they have)…but at least when someone calls me, I’ll be able to answer it
but Verizon has their problems, I got FIOS from them in November, and since then every month there is some screw up with the bill. Every month I have to call back because they keep dropping the discount.
Where’s the option for I have no GSM coverage of any kind? I’ve got CDMA from either Verizon or Alltel, and that’s it.
I own an iphone and I don’t use it
I don’t own iAnything. I love Apples marketing campaigns; I just don’t want to pay for them.
You’ve just committed one of my pet peeves, TC. Your “no” options are too specific - no vote fits for me. I don’t own an iPhone because I don’t want to be on AT&T or mess with unlocking it.
Basically it’s the network, man.
Justin - I agree. I would have had yes, no, and one extra option for “it isn’t available where i live.” that would have been interesting.
I was one of those, “I would never invest THAT much money in a fad. The iPhone is just plain silly. I’m never going to be a fashion lemming.” people.
One iphone (given as a gift) later: Eating my words. Love it.
As a student I love the iPhone. Its features are great, especially having Facebook/email/iPod/camera all wrapped into one, on the go. The texting/keyboard still sucks and if I were a power email user I would have to ditch the phone. I really don’t care about 3G that much, at all. There has been only one instance to date where I would have liked to have the copy/paste feature but it ended up being a huge non-issue. Battery life is AWESOME. I used to have a Cingular 8525 and it was awesome except the battery couldn’t last an entire day. Screw that!
Wishlist for iPhone:
~better camera, with Flash
~better keyboard input
~native rss reader so I don’t have to pull up safari and then go to bloglines mobile
~the headphone jack often doesn’t work when you’re plugging in speakers, for some reason. WTF? this is really really annoying at parties.
…that’s it.
If this is a vote for TC to determine if it needs to cover more news on iPhone ventures, the answer is definately YES.
How I get close to the camera?
Baaaahhhhh you sheep just keep following that flock of other clueless consumers!
The iPhone is nothing but a glorified brick!
If you want to see what a REAL smartphone is then just check out the new HTC Diamond mobile phone - http://www.youtube.com/view_pl.....6816A6498A
Have fun!

No, still finding Sony Ericsson far better . Far better can upgrade them change software , change Camera drivers in move even without restarting the phone , having all games , software , music i want . The audio quality also depends from me , and i make it much better than Iphones .
ok right forum to ask the question.
of the 900+ folks that said they own one, is anyone experiencing weird pain on the elbows or hand
i feel that after i started using the iphone my hand hurts a lot more.
i have a touch [:P]
It’s too expensive for a phone - when it’s available free with a contract like most decent phones (at least in the UK) then I’d consider it.
N95, only way to go, better speakers, better camera, and gps.
Hmm… Michael Arrington, I suspect that you were trying to put a video on the page, but for some reason, all I see is codes like
seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”: blah blah
They worked yesterday. Technical problems at your end? or is it just me?
Seesmic Comments are broken. At least in firefox 2 on os x (leopard)
anybody kknow about the blackberry that is coming out later this year with the touchscreen?
I’m a Gadget boy but haven’t bought the iPhone yet for these reasons:
-It needs a better text input. My logic might be flawed here as I am not used to using the touchscreen text input but as it is I can type messages 3 times faster with my BB.
-Obviously 3G. How can you release the best phone to consume media on without 3G in the first place?
-Proper push email integration. I am glad they have taken care of that in the new software build.
That’s a poll not a survey dude.
The options are a bit skewed. I don’t own one and I’m very unlikely to get one, but not because I think it’s an “overpriced toy”, simply that I don’t particularly want one. I prefer to use other models on cheaper networks than O2.
I havent got the current model because I have been in a contract with orange. Now my contract is coming to an end, im waiting for the 3G iphone to come out.

I have one, and I use it to acces my projects and tasks from Gtdagenda.com
as with all apple products - always wait for the 2nd version.
I just visited Manhattan and there were several small electronic stores advertising unlocked iPhones, probably for international tourists who can’t get it in their country.
iphone stomps blackberry!!! there are no phones even close to an iphone in the cell phone market today, at least in the US
I am waiting for the second version…
June is close
I have an iPhone
Everybody else is just jealous
Damn envy
I have an unlocked iPhone here in Canada, I have to admit I’m not a fan. It’s a great toy but not a great everyday phone. The touch screen is not my preference, I get frustrated using the keyboard (is there a hack out there to use the keyboard widescreen while typing in emails? That would help..).
It does seem like more of a chick phone if I’m being honest, but then when I let women use it they complain that they have to type funny because of their well manicured nails, no woman I know is giving up their nails for a phone!
I’m a web designer, still having no flash really sucks. I would have waited for the 3g with flash (and possibly GPS?) if I had known I was buying the iPhone ‘beta’.
The potential for this phone is amazing, as it is now.. I should have passed.
Checking in from Bogota, Colombia on my iPhone. Lots of people have jailbroken and unlockediPhones here. I wonder… Who the heck is going to buy an iPhone when it comes here officially? I mean whomever wants one and can afford it already has it! I guess only those that consider 3G important will pay for the new version
I hope to get an iphone soon need one cause all webmasters do
I’ll purchase an i-phone after I purchase a fur coat for a summer in Miami
maximo: since I’m single, maybe if I get an iphone I’ll get the girl too.
The 3G iPhone will be hard to resist… but I will still wait for Android next Xmas

I’ve got one, but after 2 weeks I gave it to my wife and come back to my WM6 phone. iPhone is beatiful with touching and effect, it is fun to play with. But it is bad as a phone, not good as web browser (compare to my laptop) - could not display flash, bad as PIM. It may good at music, but I dont listen to music so much on the go. So I decided not to keep it just for watching beatifull whether forcast.
this survey should have an option: did you buy and iPhone and return it or stop using it for phone purposes? i would have selected that option and my guess is many others would have..
4th answer: No, I’m waiting for it to be available here. (Poland)
Yes, I had iPhone lust. Yes, I have come very close to “just do it”. I didn’t. I’m glad. I bought a new MBP instead, and am relearning to use more of the capabilities of the mobile I already have *:-) I feel good about this *:-)
Windows Mobile should be an option.. I still think it has more flexibility..
Hey guys,
I love my blackberry curve (8310) with GPS, email, facebook, pacman, and all my other apps.
RIM have 2 new blackberries coming out soon, The blackberry “Bold” (9000), it looks great, it has wi-fi and video recording and more great features and the New blackberry “Thunder” (9500) the blackberry touch phone. I don’t know much details on it, but it looks kinda like the “iphone”, which I’m not a fan of.
And the “iphone” isn’t available in Australia.
I am a proud owner of the overpriced toy jesus phone. And I’m avoiding AT&T; unlocking is really very simple. It is an awesome thing.
You forget, not all your readers are in the USA. I’m in a country (Canada) where the iPhone hasn’t yet been released. So, I answer None Of The Above. I don’t have the Jesus phone, but it’s not because I’m waiting for the second model and it’s not because I think it’s an overpriced towy.
how about “No they don’t sell em in effin Canada yet”
I am very inclined to think that a large majority of people saying they had an iPhone actually don’t. It’s popular but not that popular. Even out here. There wasn’t an option for “I don’t have one because I can’t afford it/it’s not available in my country but I really really really want one.” I have no doubt people thinking along that line choose to instead claim that they did have the device. Apple enthusiasts will do anything to make Apple look good.
btw. Please don’t start posting more iphone related pieces because of this unofficial little poll!! I like that techcrunch covers a wide variety of topics. Keep it up.
Hey, I’d like one. Not a hope in hell of me ever paying anywhere near the price they expect you to though. I mean, the (minimum) monthly rate alone is well out of what I consider my affordable range.
As I see it - wait a while and they’ll release a better one, cheaper. Besides, based on its success I’d be surprised if the next generation of phones in general don’t start to copy many of the iPhones ideas.
I have one. It’s great. After a Samsung I300 palm phone, a Treo 600, and a Treo 650 over the course of several years, I was sick of having my face hang up the phone by touching the touch screen, problems with 3-way calling, and several other problems that never got addressed.
The nice thing was not losing my contacts between phones. Still have that in the iPhone.
It’s going to be big. Lots bigger. Because there will be a complete ecosystem. It’s got cool hardware and a great dev environment and no having to pay $35 for some lame mail client because the built-in one sucks horribly. No other platform had a trustworthy single place to buy software from at reasonable prices. You guys will see. The iPhone is going to be huge.
Kind of a skewed survey don’t you think. Then again I guess most surveys are that way.
My answer would be this: No, I don’t own an iPhone and don’t care to own one any time in the foreseeable future. I do own a Blackberry and it serves my needs just fine thanks… even without the BB I doubt I’d want the iPhone. Nice in it’s own way, just not for me.
Yes, Ofcourse how can someone live without iphone i do have one. It’s the thing of today. iphone rocks, wait till the 3G version comes in June 2008.
