Mike’s going to be interviewing Sarah Lacy about her new book “Once You’re Lucky, Twice You’re Good” starting around 5:30pm PT tonight.

Qik will broadcast the interview from Outcast’s SF headquarters and we’ll embed the stream below as soon as it starts.

Expect the discussion to focus on the rise of Web 2.0 in Silicon Valley, perhaps with anecdotes and other juicy tidbits from her book. While it may be too late to get a free signed copy from us, you can preorder it from Amazon or buy it once on sale tomorrow.

Too bad Twitter is down yet again or we could be notified automatically of the stream going up from @TechCrunch.

  2. Peter Urban

I am looking forward to the interview. My main question: Is the once/ twice thing focused on the quick in up and out before it dies type of venture or on building actual businesses that are sustainable ?

  3. Mark Hendrickson

@Don - but there won’t be a back channel this time around

  4. David K

    @Alan Ouch. Approaching 20 minutes late…

  5. Dan Mahon

After she fumbled at SXSW and then trashed SXSW, I could care less what this windbag has to say.

  6. Mark Hendrickson

Sorry for the delay, they must still be munching on the appetizers.

  7. Mark Hendrickson

I just got word it’ll start momentarily. Forgive the pre-recording you see there now; it’ll be replaced with the stream once the interview starts.

    And we’re live.

    Dan -David:

The insider of insiders, offering no analysis, no insight, just a litany of who she is talking to and what event or party she is staking out. Just a totally delightful young woman rubbing shoulders with the techno-elite. Fund each other, hire each other, hire the family and kids of friends, write about each other.

It is an industry that is offering no real productivity enhancements, a great subset of it. A possible minority of Web2 apps are business worthy. Even the exists are not notable for the value added to the economy. The American dream has fallen from the powerhouse of specialized high touch mid range manufacturers, custom software, and the nation that lent to others, to a morass of business that, essentially, wash each other’s dishes and sell each other insurance.

Sarah is just the external manifestation of the ego of the valley - barely 10% of which actually manufactures real products or provides real, industry consumable services.

  10. Alan Wilensky

    look at two of them…

  11. Frank Church

The title reminds me of the book by one of the Tripod founders, “Lucky or Smart”. Look it up on Amazon.

  12. bob cobb

who cares if there was an affiliate code? I dont see any issue with that

  13. xavierv

Agreed with @15. It still is a good idea to bring a live interview on TC.

What happened to Mogulus for live broadcasting btw?

  14. Jimbo

totally agree about the digg community falling apart.

  15. April Sanders

Qik quality sucks..I can’t watch more than like 15 seconds before it kills me

  16. wayne sutton

Enjoyed the interview, hope to see more live streams on techcrunch

  17. paul moran

Excellent! Made me order it on Amazon! Good job to both of you.

  18. DEckoff

    Good live interview.

Iif you’d like to read more in depth, Iust posted part 1 of my interview with Sarah about her new book, the good and bad of Silicon Valley, Twitter and more.

    Read it here:

  19. Mircea

I’ll how the book will be…just ordered it. Hope it will live to the expectations…

  20. Mike Smith

sound quality could use a little help in the future …..

  21. tagami

    Michael -

Always great content - but in this case your media sucks.

Get a better camera, get a better mike, use a better compression for your video. Yes, I know Qik is “simple”, but you and your readers are better than this. You can be frugal, use cutting edge tools AND look great. Why not?

  22. r. jones

not a flattering final shot. is it amateur night?

  23. Moudi

I hope you had another camera rolling to record a higher quality of that interview.

  24. Once You’re Lucky, Twice Your Bloody Lucky!

I have thought long and hard about luck and following all this hype around the concept Sarah Lacy is promoting ‘Once Your Lucky, Twice You’re Good’. Well, I disagree with her assertion!

  25. baah-baah-the-black-sheep

More Sarah, less Mike. Send your camera guy to a crash course. :-)

  26. JosefVirek

goddamn the video and audio quality sucks!

anyway, I think Arrington’s going to end up marrying Sarah Lacy. The sexual tension is so obvious between the two.

  27. Adam Smith

Waste of time. Seriously people. How many people care about - what does she call it - the ‘valley rebirth’ - outside of the valley or maybe wall street? I mean. Come on. Facebook is mainstream. Myspace is mainstream. But uh - plaxo. Got bought for a great sum for them. But mainstream? Not even close. Techcrunch - mainstream? Not even close. Subject matter doesn’t enable it to be. So much drivel. So little time. But apparently enough sexual tension that maybe there’s a reality web show about bloggers and actual writers. Who knows.

  28. Miles Long

I can’t watch this…the audio and video quality is shite!

Web 2.0 tech does not trump broadcast standards; it’s just a different platform. Hire some real production guys next time. The content deserves it!

  29. Stella

    i want one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. cape-able joe

ya know, i’m pretty, like, sure its not the first time someone has pulled out a cellphone to record something they happened to observe. there was a complete absence of a production setup; therefore, no plan to do so. No backdrop or lapel mics. it was like, like, i was really there, like watching from inside a little matchbox.
Qik is for like, fun, ya know?

  31. Jeff Slobotski

Interesting interview—is this just a “tell all” book or actually case studies involved?

  32. pasan

Two major windbags full of gossip and nothing more.

  33. kenobi

I really wanted to watch this, but it’s like watching a grainy happy-slapping video. Gave up after the intro.

By the way, what’s the deal with Sarah Lacy’s website?

  34. Jeff C

There’s a learning curve using a smart phone camera and Qik to record something like this. First, gotta have a good 3G network. Second, audio, audio, audio. If you’re not right up on people, and they’re not speaking loudly - or you don’t happen to have an extension microphone (which at this point as far as I know have to be rigged up MacGyver style, though Nokia had some specially made for Reuters field reporters) you can’t achieve good audio capture. And third - perhaps most important - when starting a Qik video (figured this out with my Nokia N95) as soon as you hit record, the first thing you’re pointing at (in this case, Ms. Lacy’s rear end) … will be the still picture that everyone sees before hitting play.

It’s a shame the quality on this isn’t good. I was interested in what they had to say. I’ve watched a number of Lacy’s Yahoo Tech Ticker interviews, caught her appearance on Fox Business’s Happy Hour … and all were terrific. The SXSW thing? Get over it.

  35. Munashe

nice interview, the book must be incredible. mike looks interesting though, pale

  36. Suraj Singh

Painful. The quality ruined what would have been a great video to watch. I watched the whole thing (did anyone else?!), but the really poor sound meant my attention deficit was certainly not in order. Almost a cross between DiggNation and GigaOm. How loud can we shout for TechCrunch to put out your own professional show? Surely you are only doing us, your users, and injustice? Can’t wait to see it, Mike?

  37. david saintloth

    Ditto Alan #9

And if I read another post plugging this girls book (I never heard of her before coming to this site) I am going to lose it. How do I get my business as many plugs as she as had for her book in the last week Michael? I am envious!!

    Levitation display?

    Teleporation perhaps?

    ;)
