Gillmor Gang Digests Comcast/Plaxo Deal
by Michael Arrington on May 14, 2008

A subset of the Gillmor Gang met via telephone this afternoon to debate the $150 – $170 million Comcast acquisition of Plaxo. Listen to Steve Gillmor, Dan Farber, Robert Scoble, Jason Calacanis and me talk about whether this was a smart move for Comcast, or a sucker’s purchase of a company no one in Silicon Valley would touch.

Listen here.

  • Wow, you guys really need to get a new conferencing system, stop wasting time figuring out who is there, and get rid of the static.

  • I agree with Chris, how long have they been having these conversations?

How about some investment in some technology and process so we can focus on the content.

  • Content, schmotent. 37 frigging gesture-filled minutes of “conversation.”

I gave up after 3 minutes, 28 seconds.

And not because of the static.

  • Great idea. But, christ all the background noise made it challenging.

  • Why do you need to over analyze this move by Comcast and Plaxo? I think its pure wastage of time.

  • I listened this morning, and the technological challenges are ridiculous. They are the same on Newsgang. We ought to learn to use these technologies ourselves before we make others suffer through us.
As for Comcast/Plaxo, I hate them both and they deserve each other. That being said, if you are bringing bundles of services into the home, I suppose adding the intrusive Pulse to them makes sense.

  • I gave up listening after the first 5 minutes. What a train wreck. The thing, is, I think that there would have been a lot of good points worth listening to from this group but not worth the pain of going through it. It was like the Vista of teleconferencing.

  • Transcript:

“Are you there? I think we lost Dan… Who is this??!! Dan was talking about Plaxo… Is that Scoble??…. This is Arrington… Plaxo and Comcast what? Dan’s back… Is that Dan?? Comcast has DVRs… Oh, so this is a DVR play? No, Plaxo is evil and this is a merger of idiots….

    Everyone agrees….. end of call.”

You can all thank me later for saving 20 minutes of your life…..

  • Now that you have figured out this is a waste of time, do yourself a favor and stop listening. As to who’s left, thanks for putting up with the challenge of getting these folks together. I make no apologies for the quality, as it represents the best efforts to get this conversation to you.
