Having streamed live shows before and overcoming my own obstacles with sound and video quality if done right it can be a really cool experience for viewers. I streamed a concert once from School of Rock in NJ and used Xanga for the technology. The video was really crisp and fast loading and there were tons of really excited fans chatting along even trying to direct us on the camera to shoot certain band members they liked. I did run into some issues with sound quality because the connection to the board was not good and it did leave a few viewers disappointed. All in all it was a kick ass experience to pull together and the fans had a blast.

Best of lick to KickNote. I live close to NYC so will check them out.

I am a lifelong musician. The points raised in the early critical posts are noteworthy, but none of them negate the value of kicknote.com

There have been many attempts to "reinvent the music industry" for sure, and many of them did not turn out as hoped. Believe me, I understand the frustration, both as an artist, and entrepreneur. That said, we have collectively learned things with every new attempt, and the only way the reinvention will occur is if people with ambition and resources continually attempt things like this. No one has claimed that kicknote will be a substitute for being at a live performance, nor that it will singlehandedly enable every kid with a guitar to be a rockstar. This is their first incremental step on a dauntingly large path.

As to the value of realtime viewing and voting, look at American Idol, it's 20 some odd international spin offs, (and the resultant rabid SMS storms), or the clusters of UGC ratings that occur when some ridiculous inane clip gets passed around groups of "Friends". For whatever reason, people love to give their opinion on things, and when there is some sense of either novelty (a new video), or when "Friends" have voted, it causes voting to grow exponentially in many cases. (at least for a quick minute until the Red Bull or Ritalin wears off).

So, eagerly await the launch of kicknote, for both it's successes and not-so-successes. Both types of result will forward the cause.

I'm a teacher at a high school and they have an upcoming battle of the bands, and I can assure you, the name "battle of the bands" still carries a large following. There are plenty of bands who want exposure and plenty of youngsters who want to find them. I used to go on a website called "Ultimate Band List" years back. It was a website where any band could put up a link to their site and try to get themselves out there to the masses. The days of the "Ultimate Band List" filled to the brim with trash websites are way behind us; this is a great, new idea. People spend hours on youtube and hours on purevolume and those two sites are doing incredibly well. To me, kicknote seems to combine those same two websites, and makes it more interactive for the music listeners themselves. I signed up to be notified too. I doubt I will watch a heck of a lot of it, but I would like to see how it goes and maybe hear some new music at the same time.

I think this is an amazing idea. As an artist representative, I this is great exposure for undiscovered bands. Especially to be able to have a link to share live performances, truly a boost for any press kit.

To the guys at Kicknote, great idea and thanks for giving some power back to the artists. I cant wait to see more of your stuff.

This sounds interesting but- the experience of watching a band over the Internet may be completely different from experiencing their live performance.

Some talent and aura just does not translate to the video

Chris:

Well, one advantage of using Justin.tv is that all the material will be available both live and on demand. Best of both worlds!

I personally like the idea of a battle of the bands online but I fail to see why these guys feel they must stream live. This severely limits their audience. Surely it would make better sense to have the performances available on-demand and allow users to vote at their leisure. If the content is good enough then I would imagine that page impressions and lengths of visits could be quite good and there would be plenty of opportunity to include advertising in the video stream. This way, the site and it's competition could build momentum over time as opposed to hitching it all on a single event.

I agree. I don't see the incentive for fans to be there (save whoever the bands are able to get there); and without fans, it won't be much of a battle. Hell, it's hard enough to get people to show up in real life for one of these and there are arguably less distractions on any given night than there are on the internet. Even as a self-professed music lover, I can't imagine myself tuning in for much of this (there are much quicker and dare I say better methods of music discovery than watching live streaming concerts). They'll need some sort of hook if this is to have any hope. All the same, I signed up to be notified; can't help but be curious ;-)

Maybe Kicknote's got some killer black ops re-invention for the music biz, but the pre-Ali Partovi Garageband.com was built around that concept, they even sponsored a Limp Bizkit tour to support it back in '99-2000. I smell slow news day.

As someone doing his best to "re-invent" the music industry himself, it hurts to read posts like these.

Sorry but as usual web 2.0 “gurus” only understand a small portion of the real story. The economics of the current web simply don’t support a web 2.0 utopian view of content creation. Great content produced by a business requires real business models, not “put adsense next to it” business models. Adsense is by far the most efficient way to monetize content, and it simply does not, and cannot, pay enough to create professional content. A few rules:
1. When people are listening/watching they dont give a shit about ads on the page.
2. Perceived value is value. Paid content monetizes better then ad-driven content for content which is valuable.

The battle of the bands publicity stunt was outdated two decades ago. I love how this stuff resurfaces each generation, every time technology gives a us a new toy. The 60's had original battles of the bands live on stage. The 80's revived the idea, but on television (specifically MTV). It was already old at this point. Now, on the Internet. Sad, yet funny. Good luck I wish them.
