Imagine the Wii with 3D vision. The console would understand if you were behind an object and images would move accordingly and you could reach out with your hand to “touch” items on the screen. The technology is real and it works and PrimeSense, a small Israeli company, is trying to release it into the wild.

PrimeSense, which just closed a $20 million funding round led by Canaan Partners with lead investors Gemini Israel Funds (who also provided the seed funding) and Genesis Partners. The company is moving out of development into sales.

Um. sounds like a wii to me?

  2. Steven Finch

This just looks very cool. Im sure it is going to be a bit like the wii, but still very cool.

it uses 3d vision rather than RF and IR. So you could conceivably take cover behind your couch.

  4. gilltots

it might be cool, but having to clean up all those multi-colored ribbons all over the floor after each game probably gets old pretty fast.

Man there is just tons of money out there for these smart guys!!

    When you claim
    “The Technology is real”

Are you saying that because you have one of the units at home?
How have you tested it ?

    Is this just vaporware.

Erm, if that kid can *actually* swing the racket from around his back to hit the ball I’ll be *really* impressed ;-)

  10. Jono

I would be even more impressed if it could be done without causing more damage that the console costs.

On a serious note, this technology will be awesome for arcade setups where you could use 3D goggles and with the floor being like a 360 degree treadmill which moves in the opposite direction to the user in sync with their movements (as if it the belt was on top of a frictionless surface).

Can I plug this into my skin and make it make me exercise?

  13. Harry Wang

I see adult toy manufacturers teaming up with porn sites and this technology.

Look at all the pretty colors! Santa Claus just called and told me the system is everything it’s cracked up to be… and he should know, he got it straight from the Unicorn’s mouth!

There’s another Israeli company that develops similar technology. It’s called 3DV Systems.

You can find out more on this deal and other Israeli Investments on VC Cafe at http://www.vccafe.com

This is about as cool as the Phantom console.

I’ll believe it when I see it, fellas.

I just finished up a graduate level course here at school on computer vision, and a pair of people did a very similar thing for their final project. However, one thing they won’t tell you in the press package is that computationally, this stuff is quite expensive. It takes up a good chunk of the rendering time per-frame to do any computer vision stuff at all, and that’s going to be a significant barrier for any of these startups to overcome.

    will it come cheap
