Frankly, I'm happy to see Cody Cutrer's comments. I've been using MozyPro for some time now on our Exchange server and have had nothing but problems with Bad Patch Detected Problems.

Since we also back up tons of files, I'm happy with the end result. We're just backing up the Exchange part with tape.

I'd actually like to see Mozy truncate the logs of the Exchange box in conjunction with the backup. Is that something we'll be seeing on 1.8.8?

I'm a HUGE fan of Mozy.

A few months back, I had to reinstall my OS. I just made sure my Mozy backup was up to date and then requested a restore. Mozy started compiling my files and I reinstalled. By the time I was done with my part, Mozy had my files ready for downloading. That part took a few days but in the end, I got all my data back.

Not a bad deal.

I've been using JungleDisk to back up my Mac for the past year, which uses Amazon S3 as the cloud. I paid $20 or so for the client, and then pay $0.10 per GB/month to Amazon. It "seems" to work well, though I haven't had to restore anything - yet.

I know Mozy has some big name clients (see: http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/04/23/tiny-startup-mozy-nails-multi-million-dollar-ge-storage-contract/), and is now owned by EMC, but I'm always wary of "unlimited storage" offers. I'd rather pay for what I eat !

Cody,

While I really appreciate your input, the point for me is that your current Exchange solution simply does not work on anything but the smallest stores. Nearing 4GB in a corporate environment is nothing! I have stores 2, 3 and 4 times the size of that. Despite plenty of bandwidth, not a single one of these stores is working with Mozypro.

My partner and I have watched Exchange foul up so many times that we've given up even trying.

I did my first Mozypro install nearly 6 months ago. How much longer will I have to wait until it works as advertised?

With all due respect, your product is not up to the demands of the corporate market I work in. And I don't get the sense that it will be any time soon.

As an engineer working on the Windows client here at Mozy, I thought I'd give you an update straight from the source, since there seems to be some confusion about what the "latest" version is. The latest recommended version is 1.8.6.21. This means that new installs of MozyHome will be 1.8.6.21. This also happens to be the current required version for MozyHome, so any version earlier than that is not allowed to back up. After 1.8.6.21 was released, we started working on 1.8.8.0, using 1.8.7.x for the internal pre-release build numbers. During the course of 1.8.8 development, we fixed a number of bugs and crashes. We backported some of the more trivial fixes, and made a 1.8.6.23, leaving the fixes that required larger changes to be released in 1.8.8. Unfortunately, one of the fixes that wasn't a "quickfix" was the bad patch detected issue for Exchange servers. Anyhow, 1.8.8 has been quite a while in the coming, but is in the final stages of QA right now, and we expect a release very soon. However, we are not afraid to push it back if we find other critical bugs.

As to end users having a 1.8.7 build... there have been a few cases of customers contacting support, as well as working directly with the engineers to resolve issues. I've been running a 1.8.7 build on my personal Exchange server (nearing 4 GB) as well as my own file server (~300 GB) with no problems for several weeks now.

So, in summary, 1.8.8 fixes a few longstanding issues (running out of temp space, some file selection problems), and has many, many, many stability improvements. I'll be glad to get it out to the general public as soon as possible.

@ 18 Dan: Great catch. I think...

@ 17 Reece: Seriously, what's up? Is this a totally fake comment like everybody now thinks, or is there some other explanation? We are all very curious.

Funny, but on the MozyPro site there is no Windows Version 1.8.7 posted yet ? There's an upcoming beta release 1.8.6.23 dated March 6. Per tech support, "odd numbered releases are for internal use only".

Not sure what client version some of you are using, but I'm running MozyPro version 1.8.7 on a dozen or so of my clients Exchange servers and it works great. Make sure you're using the most current version. If you do need help, their support team was quick to respond and helpful the few times I contacted them.

What made me go with Mozy over the handful of other vendors out there was the backing of EMC which means they wont go belly up like most of these other fly-by-night companies.

I totally agree with Dan's comments above. I've tried Mozypro with an half dozen plus corporate clients and have Exchange failures almost everywhere. They keep promising a fix that has never come. I'll be moving on soon too.

I just put up a blogpost that talks about my experience with mozy for mac. Generally it wasn't all that great... but I don't know what's better at the price-per-megabyte when you're talking a few hundred GB. Blogpost here: http://digitalcomposting.wordpress.com/2008/05/02/mozy-for-mac-finally-out-of-beta/

Jason,

We submitted a news on IDrive for Mac(http://www.idrive.com) release just a few days ago to Techcrunch with similar price points as Mozy. Why would that be ignored by Techcrunch, but publish this one by mozy?

You'll need to submit your story to the email address above. I suggest you spice it up a bit, though... Winning entries will probably include details of pagan rituals and animal sacrifice made in vain attempts to rescue data.

I deserve it because I have learned my lesson. After having lost some very important data (business and personal), I try to back up as much as possible. I use the old way though. First through cds, then dvds. The copies and originals in my computer are in the same location. Having a mac doesn't make things any easier. I would love to put this to good use. Thanks!

I'll mirror the above, I love the mozy idea, but backing up my macbook pro has never worked.
I wish mozy didn't limit uploads to 1MB. It just makes the service unusable.
Plus the mac client is a massive resource hog and pretty unreliable. I told them that in their beta survey, but its been taken out of beta anyway..

Nearly there Mozy! I wish you would look and fix these issues. Why put a bandwidth cap on anyway?

I've rolled out MozyPro to a dozen clients in the last 6 months – since EMC purchased them. It's a great low priced backup service for files & folders but has a bunch of problems: Any Exchange backup over 3+GB fails 75% of the time (both tech support & sales keep promising a fix with a new release next week – but that’s been the line for 3+ months). Restores can be very slow if their servers are busy. Tech support answers the phone quickly but are not helpful and don't follow-up nor seem to even log the call. The Client app may say “Successful Backup” but if you look at the log you may find errors and bad patches!!! The e-mail alerts (in beta for many months) is very poor. The latest post in the press & news section of their website is Nov2007 just after being acquired by EMC. I’ve been waiting for some EMC oversight (they seem to have only raised prices which is fine by me and announced Enterprise offerings that they are not ready for – see above issues), some better communication with customers, some fixes & enhancement, something! Soon, I’ll be moving on…
