Apple and AT&T will cut $200 off the price of the iPhone 3G when it arrives this summer. The phones should hit at $399 and $499 for 8 and 16-gigabyte versions and the subsidy should drop the price to as low as $199.
Fortune has also pseudo-confirmed a GPS chip inside the new phone.

this is defiantly not true..doesn’t apple want to maximize profits? or unless these iphones are like 2gb phones
THANK YOU BABY JESUS! FINALLY!
source??
pseudo-confirmed = half truth?
i thought i was on techcrunch?
If for some reason this is true, I guess it would only work on 2yr contracts, can someone with an iphone already extend their contract 2 yrs and get this phone for 199, cause then I would just sell my iphone right now for like 250.
Now we’re talking!
You guys are so horrible at hardware coverage. How come the gps is “pseudo-confirmed” but the rest is certain? There isn’t a dime’s worth of difference in how the article in fortune notes those two things! If the story is without-a-doubt true then why not go ahead and call the gps rumor confirmed? Seriously psuedo-reporting for you.
As usual engadget does a much job casting a hopeful but skeptical eye on the totally unconfirmed story (it is framed as a question not a statement) and finishing knowingly with, “we understand that right after telling Fortune this information, the “person” burst into a cloud of rainbow-colored sparkles and went flying off into the night sky.”
The author of the article has been wrong on multiple occasions before.
er… author of the original article (Scott Moritz), not John Biggs
It’s a rumor that has some legs. Let’s just see how it pans out. I know you SF types are big into the iPhone so I thought you might enjoy this.
I hope the ebay price doesn’t change too much for current ones… I haven’t had it that long and would like to upgrade without taking a $200 hit.
There goes my Windows Mobile with EVDO
The 200 deal requires a 2-year-contract. Can you imagine how many new versions of the iPhone will be released in that 2 year period? I’d love a TechCrunch poll asking that question.
# iPhone Vers in 2 Year Period
a. 1-2
b. 3-4
c. 5-6
d. 7-9
e. 10+
f. Who Cares – the iPhone Buzz is Dead
lol – it’s Just about the damn carrier contracts – Way Way too expensive for users to use these phones, there needs to be Android attached or something so as to decrease the cost of the iPhone AT&T dataplan
Dude! If this is true, then all my friends using Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile are going to ditch their carriers as they have been dying for an iPhone!
Unfortunately I have already purchased one, although I’ll celebrate with those who acquire the new ones.

I feel like the only way this would happen is if the phone is severely gimped in other ways (limited to 8 GB model)……selling off my old iphone before its price bottoms …will buy new iphone from http://www.buy-3g-iphone/
Pls let me know the best deal
If this is true you have to love competition, Apple would never agree to this unless AT&T felt that the competition was getting aggressive.
With Sprint releasing the Samsung Instinct next month for a rumored under $300 and LG and the others in the hunt, this makes it a great time for the rest of us.
I’ve always liked the iPhone but hated the price and the 2.5 g network that I had to connect it to, this gives me even more choices.
Is TechCrunch hacked?
I’m not sure why Apple would allow AT&T to sell the iPhone for $199 because a price that low just devalues the brand. The iPhone is a premium product, and Apple products in general get a high quality perception from consumers. I don’t know why Apple would want to mess with that formula, but we’ll see.

AT&T must have found out that ARPU for iPhone is much higher than average. iPhone appeals to the highest-income segment. On top you have a higher web use thanks to its Safari browser. So the business case of a $200 handset subsidy could actually fly.
The risk of an end-price reduction is that it might appeal not only to high-income users, but to budget-constrained customers, that will not generate such a high ARPU.

With the way Fortune has botched so many stories about technology items of late, why does ANYONE believe anything they “report”???
I have been waiting until the 3G iPhone comes out. I was planning to buy it at the current prices; this just makes it more attractive (but harder to get, of course). I don’t even care that I have to pay Verizon $175 for an early termination fee. They (Verizon) sent me a survey earlier this week. One of the questions they asked was “what would make your more likely to renew your Verizon contract?” My answer: iPhone.
Dear All ,
I am Looking for Apple I Phone
Kindly send me the Price list of i Phone 8GB and I Phone 16GB
any of the Retailer Seller in Bangalore , Mail me

att and apple would quickly gain back money from the expensive plans at att. so its basically still selling the iPhone at the same price before but not really. personally i might get it if this is true either this or the new sidekick thats coming out sidekick aspen or something like that.
A great way to upgrade your old phone is to sell it to a site like http:\\www.CashForiPhones.com and use the money to upgrade to a new 3G they buy 8gb working iphone for around $255 and will even buy broken and water damaged iphones.
