Keyword search from the user point of view (who enters the search keywords) is always going to stay as it is fast and intuitive. However, what's behind the scene will change.

There is an interesting trend in search engines development which is trialling what we can call the future of bottom up search engines aggregation.

I recently read these articles which show some examples of semantic search engine advances which I recommend if you are interested to the topic
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/yahoo_to_enable_custom_semantic_search.php

and
http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/09/18/sneak-peak-at-t2-twines-semantic-search-engine/

I am personally triallying one of these search engines on my small website http://www.all-about-olive-oil.com
Try to make a search there and you see what comes out.

"The semantic web crowd are just a bunch of XML jockeys / failed librarians who love telling other people how to organize their own stuff."

my response: Sorry Matt but you have it backwards. As a 'failed' librarian who assisted in the making of Google I have always been highly skeptical about the whole semantic web notion. A majority of those people don't seem to have done their AI homework and may have been watching Star Trek instead. Plus doing tedious work may actually get some of their fingernails dirty. Plus Librarianship sounds too old fashion so they needed to spice up their degrees to Master of Information Systems (or Technology).
Once again old ideas repackaged with a fancy new dress all gussied up for whoring oneself.

I think that a combination of keyword search and understanding the language will be the way to go. The ideal is when the computer can learn the language through experience and eventually understand user queries and what the person is asking for.

Users also must be able to control the degree of exploration to "directedness" (the emphasis on each mode) in the search results they are given.
